DH is in Air-conditioning. Spoke to him and this is what he had to say. Central: It is where there is a big machine either on the roof top or a bit far away from the main building. what it does is that it chills water which is then piped into the house into an indoor unit which can be above the ceiling. Air is sucked through a cooling coil(through which the water flows) which blows into the room. This is how we get cold air. the water which is now a little warmer, goes back to the machine outside to be chilled again. Advantages: very low noise. Disadvantage: High DEWA Bills as 1 machine can cater to an entire villa or a group of villas(depending on tonnage of the chiller) and even if you need A/c in one room, you need to switch on the entire chiller. Package type: this is what Kaydee called a central system.Advantages: not as quiet as Central. Disadvantage: Lots of Duct work and need to have them cleaned (at least once every 2 years)as there is possibility of mold forming in the months that have high humidity. Also can get foul smell because of mold. These machines cater to entire villas or a few rooms at one time. So DEWA bills can be higher as you cannot switch off these machines unless you do not need a/c in all the rooms that it caters to. Split and windows is exactly as Kaydee mentioned. Advantages: switch on only when needed.Hence lower DEWA bills. Disadvantage: Loud and UGLY. Regarding which will cool better. It all depends on how much cooling you need and whether the A/c installed is suited (has the tonnage) for that capacity. On an average a room about 18-20 sq meters(with approx 3.2-3.5mtr) ceiling needs 1.5 tons of cooling capacity. Hope this helps. Dear rush81, This info is so helpful and thank you for replying!

IMO the split a/c's are much more effective as they are individually controlled. OK, they might 'look' ugly stuck on the wall, but who looks up there? :-) You are right though. But the condensers(outside part) are they very noisy? Our previous villa had the old type with half outside, yes they did make a noise but something you soon get used to (like living beside a busy main road or underneath a flight path). Our current villa has the modern split a/c's which emit a gentle humming noise. Friends who stay with us comment that the individually controlled a/c's are so much more effective compared to their central a/c.

There are three types of AC for villas: Central; a large unit (usually one for each floor) set either in the garden or on the roof. This is ducted throughout the house and is the same temperature throughout. If you have two, each can be set to a different temperature. Split; usually one for each room, with a small unit outside (for each) and a unit attached high up to the wall in each room. These can be controlled individually. Window; again, one for each room (or sometimes two if it's a big room). These are either set into the wall or window and are half inside and half outside (more out than in). They can be controlled individually. Central is probably the most efficient for cooling. Splits need looking after, especially if they are old, but can be very effective. Window units are not as good and tend to rattle and make a lot of noise. AC's come in different tonnage's, a 1 tonne is less effective than a 2 tonne etc. Over the last 30 years I have had all types and prefer central. I have recently had a new split put in my kitchen, as the central ac was not cool enough there. My landlord put in a 2 1/2 tonne and I can have my kitchen as cold as my fridge if I want. I hope this helps a bit. Thank you so much Kaydee, that's so helpful and very into details!

Split a/c is cheaper to run and faster to cool down, we have them in the outside rooms.

We had split a/c's installed on the wall as the central a/c in our place is not great. We found we were having to run the central a/c for hours on end just to cool the house to a reasonable temperature which still wasn't good enough in summer. The split a/c's are amazing, they cool the room down in just a few minutes, are much cheaper to run and actually though we were worried about the look you don't really notice them. You can then also have them room by room instead of putting central a/c on to cool multiple rooms!

Polly - Central AC is what you have in your appartment; split AC is the ugly loud units that are stuck on the wall. LOL - Thanks! Well there you go! Learn something new every day! Yep, see I have no idea what the answer it to your question "flyingcutie" No worries! I am just worried if the split AC will be powerful enough for the hot summer in dubai.

I have no idea what a split / central AC actually means. I thought though the older villa's had 1 AC unit upstairs and 1 AC unit downstairs, but that is the limit of my knowledge.
