Textile Souk?

Hi there!

I have some relatives visiting next week and was thinking of a trip to the Textile Souk. Now, my questions are...

Where is the Textile Souk?
Is there only 1 Souk on the Deira side, and is this the Textile one?
Is there a Souk on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek?

Ultimately my aunt would be after textiles and crafty things... any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks heaps!

Uhm, Souq Naif is in Deira, and it's not just a textile souq. Easiest directions to textile souq, is follow the road down to Bur Juman, keep going onto Seef street ( the street that runs along the creek, the British, American and Saudi consulates are located there). Follow Seef street to the end, where it curves into a roundabout . Take the first exit - you will have the Bastakiya on your right. Right after, you will see the Dubai Museum on your right. There's a paid parking lot here, either park here or take the right , just before the museum. Follow the road to the end. At the junction, take a right and there's a paid parking lot just as soon as you take the right. The entrance to the textile souq is a coupla steps down the road. If you park near the Dubai Museum, walk towards the creek and there are small side entrances to the textile souq on the right. If you don't find parking anwhere there, keep going until you reach the end of the road, take a left at the junction that will take you to the main road. There's a Carrefour on the opposite side of the road where parking is available. HTH

Thanks Marroosh, we driving, so is there an easy way to drive and park? I won't recommend it though I don't drive and won't be able to tell you how to get there by car. Sorry!

I think you're talking about Souq Naef. If you're taking the metro you need to be on the green line and get off at Baniyas Square.

Sorry to bump an older thread of mine... I just need some blonde-proof directions on how to get to the textile souk on the Bur Dubai side. We'll be coming from Dubai Mall. Thanks heaps!

There are also some textile shops on the gold souq side if you want to start off there and treat her to a 1dh abra ride across the Creek Thats a great idea! We'll have a very active toddler with us though... would we get her stroller onboard? No-wouldn't try it-but you could catch the water taxi from Baniyas (sp) which is further towards Deira City Centre to the Textile souq for 4 dhms per person-you still get to cross the Creek in safe enclosed comfort rather than clutching the sides of an abra.! Much to my water-safe husband's horror, we took my toddler son and buggy across the creek on an abra. I had done it many times before so was quite relaxed about it. As my husband's first experience, he was looking for life jackets! People take little ones across all the time, but you need to move quickly and have very stable sea legs while getting on and off. ;) To be honest, I'm glad I had done the journey a few times on my own before venturing on with a child.

Just to add... You can hire your own abra for 30 minutes to take you up & down the creek (60dirhams) My mum liked this as she had more room to move. If they have time and want a nice lunch and a coffee Basta Art Cafe is really lovely

The textile souq is on the Bur Dubai side-the traders who deal in larger quatities are at one end-the others down the further end close to the abra station. Meena Bazaar just around the corner has wonderful Indian embroidered textiles and Satwa is good too-take her to Fida for a look-see

Hi Shellly, as I understand it, the textile souk is the souk that runs parallel with the Creek, just past the Dubai Museum, so it is on the bur dubai side. However, its always seemed to me that these sellers are more aimed at the wholesale trade. You might be better exploring the fabric shops that are in the area behind Al Fahidi metro station - not sure whether that area has a name, but there are more fabric shops down there than you can shake a stick at! Edited to add:- with one of my visitors recently, we caught the metro to Al Fahidi and went exploring the fabric shops, then walked down to the Bastakiya to look at the historic buildings and had a coffee. Made a really nice afternoon out! edited by shamat on 09/04/2012
