Looking to hire a car in the UK and always hired on my UK Driving Licence, remember reading on the site that if not resident you can't hire and should use your UAE licence - please can someone give me a little info on this - many thanks, also can anybody tell me cheapest they have found this summer, prices have gone through the roof.

I use holiday autos but try not to collect them or drop them back at the airport as it costs a fortune to do that If you can find somewhere that isnt at the airport but close by you will save a fortune

thanks for the replies, I like the fact that if I use the UAE one I avoid speeding tickets, having paid so many over the years !!! Just one point I lost my uk licence so applied on line for a new one and was sent here via my postal redirection. I posted a while back on the excess insurance and a lady gave me a link to annual insurance covering the excess, thanks for this as when I contacted them they have reduced the premium from 50 to 38 pounds.

I hired a car whilst home ( 2 weeks ago )and had no problems at all. I did ring the hire company to hire the car a day early and they informed me to bring my passport and UK utility bill, once I explained I didnt have a bill as I was a non UK resident, I was told that will be ok, just bring your passport and credit card. I booked thru National Car Hire. We can hire cars and be non resident of the UK. How do holiday makers from around the world manage to hire cars????? Its a Myth what we have read in the past.

That's good to know BellaUK, I must check when my photo part expires. :)

Well I used it in June and it had expired, hence the reason I gave them my UAE one, but they asked for my UK one. I said it has expired and she said it was fine it's only the photo that is really expired, and then called the DVLA, who also reminded me my photo card had expired and I should renew it, I said I was no longer a UK resident but I still had the same UK address and he said that was fine. That's good enough for me, I was open about the situation, its not for me to do their job and correct them. Calls are recorded and if I needed to I can go back to it.

Holiday autos is a great site and having hired cars for the last 15 years all over the world never ever had an issue not using a UK license.

BellaUK, if your UK licence has expired will that not come to light when the car hire firm call DVLA? As you say, worst case scenario use your UAE, not sure if that means any more cost for insurance or anything.

Well I cant do that now can I edna, as I am not a UK resident, same reason I can't renew my photocard which has expired. What's the worst case scenario, so they refuse to accept my UK license because I don't have a counterpart (though they are ones who insist they have it when they see I am a British citizen with a UK address) and then I hand them my UAE one which they then have to accept...luckily the flights in Newcastle arrive mid-day and I always travel on a Friday so problem solved :)

But if you don't have the counterpart, they will just call the DVLA for a check (to see if you have any points etc.) I have no idea where my counterpart is and have never needed it. Make sure it is a week day if you need to do that. :)

But if you don't have the counterpart, they will just call the DVLA for a check (to see if you have any points etc.) I have no idea where my counterpart is and have never needed it. Apply to the DVLA for a new one, then. Just because you've never needed it in the past doesn't mean you'll never need one in the future. For example, if you fetch up at a rental counter without your counterpart out of DVLA office hours, the rental company is entirely within their rights to refuse to rent to you because they can't get the information they need from the DVLA. So at best you'd have to come back the next day during office hours (which may or may not fit with your plans), at worst the rental company might insist that you'd been a no-show, keep your money and make you rebook at additional cost. If you look at the T&Cs of all UK rental companies, they all include a section about people presenting UK driving licences needing to show [b'>both parts[/b'> of the driving licence. That obviously doesn't mean that every rental agent will insist on seeing both parts, but it does mean that they've got a clear and unambiguous reason to refuse to rent to you if they want. They are under no obligation to contact the DVLA themselves.

DVLA told me last year, and I have commented before about it, that although you still have your UK licence and a home in the UK if you are resident in the UAE (ie resident visa for UAE) you should not use your UK licence, which should be surrendered when you get your UAE one, although we all know we don't do it. Many rental and insurance companies do not understand because as you are a UK citizen and you have a UK passport - apparently you could come a cropper if you have an accident and you have to claim then your resident 'status' will/may be revealed and you will not be covered, personally I am not going to trust that I am covered if I don't know 100% for sure I am. I am only quoting what the DVLA told me last year. We've always hired a prepaid car with our UAE driving licences in the UK with Thrifty, great prices and great cars with regular upgrades. I do hope this helps.

not sure about the rule on licences...but we usually stick with National/Europcar for the rentals. The cheaper options on carhire3000 work out to more if you want the excess waiver thingy(is that what its called?) for the insurance. we found out the painful way last month :P

www.arguscarhire.com try them - have used them and very happy - car we got was brand new and an upgrade! - FYI if you use your dxb license then you don't get points added if you get caught speeding - not condoning it, just saying! also if you use your UK licence you will need both paper and card!

If you have a home in the UK and current licence then there will not be a problem. :)

I book through carhire3000.com who are a broker and will find the best price for you. I found it was cheaper than going directly to the hire car place. I believe the rules are that you are technically not allowed to drive on your UK license if you are no longer a UK resident but I got a hire car in the UK 2 weeks ago, and even though I told them that I was no longer resident and my UK photocard ID had actually expired they insisted they process it on the UK license and not UAE one, and they called the DVLA for a reccord check and the DVLA had no problem with it either, so who knows?!

When I needed to hire I did it on my UK driving licence. I always found Enterprise to be the best company, that is in Scotland, I don't know if they are a national company. :)
