My parents are staying at the moment and hold British passports. They are going to be here over the 30 day time stamped on their passports, what is the procedure and where do you go to get an extension? Can I go to the office at DNATA on SZH and get it done there? Any help appreciated.

Hi moo moo & der, There are two places to make the visa run: Hatta (on the road to Muscat) and the RAK border post that leads you to the Musandam/Khasab (up the coastal road, approx 1 hr). It is only at the RAK border that you can walk across; the Hatta border crossing surely is to far apart from the Omani stations.

Hi there again moo moo, Musandam is part of Oman - and borders RAK so guess that must be where you went for your visa runs :)

Hi Der Nope don't think so. Don't even know how to get to Musandam! ;) I used to go along the Emirates road, through Sharjah, and then go through Rak until I reached the border. Then on my way back, would take the coast road to stop off at Barracuda!!!! :) ETA If anybody wants directions, just shout! edited by moo moo on 18/08/2011

Moo moo, guess the RAK to Oman visa route is via Musandam and not Dubai to Oman via Hatta?

Until we left recently, I was doing visa runs for DS for over 18 months. We did the RAK to Oman route where you can leave your car at the border and walk about 150m to the Oman passport control. The first time we did the visa run we did it within the 30 day timeframe but after that we always had the 40 days allowance (ie the 10 day extension period). However, anybody doing this should remember that if and when they decide to leave Dubai, even if they are still within the 10 day extension grace period, they will get fined at the airport if over the 30 days. The 10 day grace period is only for those who look to renew again via a visa run. Hope that makes sense. edited by moo moo on 18/08/2011

Please don't believe anybody who says you can walk from either the Dubai Border Post (where you get an exit stamp) or from the Oman Customs Post (which is between the Dubai Border Post and the Oman Border Post at Wajaja). Well you could walk if you really wanted to but it's a good 15 minutes drive between the Dubai Border Post and the Oman Border Post at Wajaja, and that's assuming that Omani Customs officers don't want to look in the back of your car. Last time we went through Omani Customs point the bus between Dubai and Muscat was in the 'heavy vehicle' lane, all bags had been taken out of the bus and all passengers had to identify their bags. Then a dog was doing a very good job of sniffing all the bags. Guess all the bags were clean because the bus overtook us about 100km down the road to Muscat!

Hi Nadia, one does not have to stay in the Oman. One is required to 1. Obtain the exit stamp at the UAE border post, 2. "enter" Oman's immigration building at the border (to have your passport stamped) and then 3. can immediately return to Dubai's border post to have your new entry stamp. Cost per person: AED 200 (to Oman's Immigration). [i'>[b'>This applies to persons with nationalities that do not require visas to be issued prior to arrival.[/b'>[/i'> This visa run can be made as often as desired. The drive is approximately 1 hr 15 minutes to the border. No idea about the cost for car & driver. If you do decide to make a weekend of it, the next larger place is Sohar where you could find the Sohar Beach Hotel.

Very easy process, we breezed in and out within the hour, last Thursday. One note, however, that was not mentioned before: whilst no fees are to be paid at the UAE border(*), the Oman visa does cost AED 200 per person. (*) that is if the initial visa duration has not elapsed... in which case there would be a fee (fine) of AED 100 per day. edited by crystalsindubai on 17/08/2011

But why would I get a fine? Sorry about being slow/new, but I'm not overstaying - just making another exit/entry 'within' the fresh visa, right? Sorry read your answer but the heading above, nope you will be fine, loads of tourists to the same thing, you will actually get a new visa for 30 days.

This happened to me, so I made a late visa run to Oman, no problems other than a small fine.

Quick question: I arrived here July 1st, got my 'visa on arrival' extended after 30 days following a trip to Qatar, and I will be going back to Denmark in 10 days. So until now I've used 17 days of my 'new' visa, but I'm considering a trip to Oman/Musandam/Dibba on Saturday. Will I have any problems re-entering the U.A.E. again, or am I worried for no reason? Hope you can help me out, I tried calling the Ameer service but the lady there kept talking about overstaying and paying fines. I kept telling her that I was here legally on my new visa but she was confused:-(

Thats about it. Can you believe I was told this by the very helpful ladies at Al Jafiliya Visa office!! They said its OK every-one does it! If you go mid-week it is less busy, don't forget to have your own passport as well as everyone in the car as there are 2 or 3 police check points as you approach the border. Do not be alarmed as the guards also have machine guns slung around their necks. It will seem a bit 3rd world at first but you just get used to it. When you get stamped out at the hut on the RHS you can either walk across the road or drive to the entry point (2 mins)this is to get to another bigger hut - like a porta cabin. You go into the office on the LHS corner up a few steps. They will also give you a bit of paper with a stamp on for you to give to the man in the cabin on the way out when he asks for "small paper" I think this may be for the car but who knows?? This country seems to function on small bits of paper!! Call me if you want verbal reassurance - Jo

We recently asked at DNATA if we could pay for an extension and were told no, that a visa run had to be completed. (That was about a month ago).

Hi Noddy, 2 years ago when we moved in Dubai, I had a stamp for a 30 days visa (before getting the resident visa) and it turned out to be valid for 60 days...I never understood why ! but I think this is no longer the case...

Thanks for this Jodel, so I can drive down towards Hatta, with my mum and dad in the car get them out, stamped, walk to the entry stamp and pick them up and come home! Sounds good to me. I have checked on websites and one says that although you get a 30 day stamp it means 60 days!! Confusing or what? Thanks again.

Yes Noddy you can do that; I think the cost is 600 each for another 30 days. Another way is to drive to the border post at Hatta get an exit stamp out of Dubai, then walk to the customs point on the other side of the road and get entry stamp in for another 30 days. Best thing is no charge for British Passport!! Good Luck Jo
