What's the maximum time period for which a GP can prescribe anti-depressants?

An emergency GP put me on a month's prescription of cipralex last month and it helped me immensely. I hadn't been on AD's for a good few years and was to be honest very happy with how much better I felt going back on them this time.

I now need to renew the scrip as I've been off them for 2 weeks and am already starting to get into a state again. Thing is, we're struggling a bit at the moment, and as my insurance doesn't cover psychiatry I would have to pay at least AED500 to see someone just to get a prescription. It also worries me that whichever doctor I see may be 'anti medication' and would just refer me for more sessions instead and so I'd basically be wasting 500dhs.

I know that seeing a therapist is as important, if not more so, than the medication, but frankly we just can't afford it right now and so I just need a prescription.

Is it possible for a GP to prescribe for more than 1 month? Can anyone recommend a doctor who is non judgmental and does not have a nasty, old fashioned 'just get over it' attitude (have seen WAY too many of these people here and every time it makes me feel even worse)?

Any advice or experiences appreciated!

Thanks :)

On a slightly different note I have 3 months worth of Prozac/Salipax generic that I got for myself from India and my medication was changed! Happy to pass on to someone on this.

Dr Bernard Fischer at Coopers Health clinic on al wasl road is our family GP...He prescribes my cipralex and has done for an embarrassingly long time ;) Can't for life of me remember what a consult costs (280? 350?) and then you can get a refil prescription over the phone each month for 20dh. about 300 dirhams!! Dr. Fisher is fab!!! such good bedside manner!

I think technically they are only allowed to prescribe one month at a time. What you can do is have them prescribe a double dose per month and, therefore, you have two month's worth at one time. I don't need to do this now but have had it done for me in in the past when I did not have insurance. Currently, I get my prescriptions from my GP at the American Hospital and they allow me to refill by just calling in -- however, I should point out that my doctor knows me well and have been seeing him for many years. Hope this helps.

Oh...they can only legally write a script for one month supply at any one time. You can get refills for a further two months as you need them, without a consult, then need to see the GP again to continue the next three months of prescriptions.

Any GP can prescribe anti-depressants for up to six months. After that you need to see a psychiatrist since they are a controlled medication. Dr Carol Smylie at Dubai London Clinic DFC is lovely...easy to talk to, knows what she's talking about and will refer you to the right psych if/when the time comes. Take care of yourself. :)

I was on cipralex for quiet sometime and did not require that I see a psychiatrist. You may be able to get a GP to prescribe it for you.

That's what I was told on the phone a few weeks ago. I'll call again tomorrow and check though. Still, they do charge, which is kind of the problem...otherwise I'd have been in there ASAP.

Hi Annabelle - that was actually one of the first places I contacted as they have such a great reputation, but I was told that the first appointment is AED 500 and every appointment thereafter is AED 450...that was with the psychiatrist (I think Dr. Amer?)

I suggest you go to Dubai Community Health Center on beach road and see Dr. Amer. He is a very good and nice psychiatrist and does not charge 500 dirhams. He can be fully booked though; but the staff is very friendly, so they might be able to help you..good luck
