Bought some chilled chicken breast from Waitrose at the weekend but its very jelly like and slimy and isn't really very firm when cooked. You wouldn't expect that from Waitrose in the UK. I never buy frozen chicken here and have my doubts about even the 'fresh' ones, they are always so watery they seem to have been frozen and then thawed. Aside from that there is the concern over use of hormones and antibiotics etc. none of the major poultry farms here vouch that their products are additive free and one well known supplier has admitted their hens are unhealthy. http://www.thepoultrysite.com/poultrynews/22357/chicken-supplies-down-to-the-bare-bones And there's reason to suspect frozen chicken filets may not even be chicken breasts, here's how http://d.yimg.com/nl/australia/site/player.swf?vid=24472661&repeat=0&browseCarouselUI=hide%22

If I buy frozen, I choose Co-op Islami or Sadia brands.) I've tried those brands (breasts) and they have a horrible after taste, plus have a look at the ingredients list! Maybe it's different for whole chickens? I usually buy frozen chicken legs or boneless chicken thighs....

I get mine from carrefour and the co-op--the fresh brand named al-rawdah...i buy the big pack of chicken breasts and freeze them on a tray and them put then in a zip-lock bag... That way they dont stick while frozen. I also but their whole chicken n clean them and cut a few into pieces and freeze on a tray then into a zip-lock bag. I also freeze some as-is in the package. It is more expensive and they are smaller... Especially the breasts... But it is good chicken. I bought chicken breast kabobs from Soinneys once and cooked them at home... That chicken was the nastiest texture ever. They used to sell whole frozen chicken from Germany but I can't remember the brand now... It was good chicken and almost half the price of al-rawdah... But for some reason they stopped selling it.

The Organics Cafe ones are shipped in from Germany I think (that's what I could make out on their website)... does this mean they've been frozen and defrosted? Or do they sell them frozen...

If I buy frozen, I choose Co-op Islami or Sadia brands. If I buy fresh, I like to make the trip to Union Co-op to buy their fresh local Al Khazan brand of chicken parts (usually stocked near the fresh eggs). A foodie friend swears by Al Rawda Farms whole chickens. I also like the turkey/ chicken parts from Organics on their 20% discount Saturdays ;)

Supposedly "fresh". They give me goose bumps when I have to handle them. Never again! But where is better? Do they have to stick to guidelines here like they do in other countries? Fresh as in "freshly defrosted".. I'm afraid I bite the bullet and buy from the Organic Store when there are special offers on - apparently, this coming Saturday, there will be 20% discount, I was told earlier this week in The Greens. That's good! thanks! will have a walk along on Saturday.

I know back home you could see where the produce was from and could pay according to the quality but Waitrose only have the one range of fresh chicken which also has no ingredients list!

Some very questionable stuff here! Find Waitrose quite strange here as they are supposed to be about paying a little extra for good quality but they don't have like a "finest range" here and a lot of the stuff is not great quality! The Waitrose essentials range which is supposed to be the budget range is more than branded stuff!

This very thread reminds me of how crappy food is in Dubai. Better enjoy my chicken now! ;)

No - I NEVER buy frozen chicken. If I need to freeze it I do that at home - fresh all the way with me. Ask at the counter where the chicken is from - there should be no ingredient list apart from chicken

Do you buy local chicken? I get mine from Park and Shop - If I buy a whole chicken I get it from there. They alwats seem a bit on the small size but that's usually because they don't have anything pumped into them (as far as I can tell) To be honest I don't know what they are. The breasts come in packs in the frozen section. Maybe I should buy fresh? Are the ones at Park and Shop fresh? Is there an ingredients list? edited by dairylea on 17/08/2011
