A note aside ... you said your guests are here tomorrow. Remember tomorrow is Friday, so many places in Bastakiya and the souk will be closed in the morning. Everything will be open after 4pm.

from a EW "competitor" 's website: (looks very interesting) new Sikka Art Festival, organized by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. Located in the historic Bastakiya district the Sikka Art Fair runs from March 12 to 21. The focus of the fair is on art by local artists, particularly Emirati’s, in an effort to give them wider public exposure. While in Bastakiya for Sikka be sure to visit House 44 where three Emirati and two international artists are participating in an artist-in-residence program sponsored by The Delfina Foundation, Tashkeel and Art Dubai, with the support of the British Council. House 44 is open March 13 to 20.

Hi Mollydxb, the one I meant is actually in the Bastakiya next to the mosque. The restaurant you most likely refer to is Beit Al Wakeel - it boasts a terrace over the water and is in the middle of the souq. Lovely location, unfortunately the air is quite polluted when you sit on the terrace...

There is an art fair on there at the moment which hasn't been promoted particularly well....apparently some amazing spaces to look at and you can wander in and out of several wind towers/houses...It isn't the Bastakiya Art Fair of previous years but is worth visiting all the same and apparently there is live music in the evenings. XVA is a must (as is Basta)and they have a fantastic menu and a lovely seating area too!

there is an Arabic restaurant further down towards the creek (in the B), Is this the restaurant that you can see from the water taxi's? There is one that is always packed & smells delicious from afar. Near the textile souk?

And there is always the Majlis Gallery, the building housing the Foundation for Cultural Understanding (can talk to volunteers about Islam and local customs), there is an Arabic restaurant further down towards the creek (in the B), and also the mosque there allows "infidel" visitors. From there, I usually take visitors (via the Museum) thru "Little India"'s alleyways past the Hindu temple to the creek, rent an abra to the Heritage Village... don't forget the Sheikh Saeed House there... great pictures of Old Dubai before the oil boom, amongst other things, and a great view of the creek... Have a lovely time with your visitors!

Mine usually enjoy visiting the main museum-it is cheap -only around 3 dhs-they can have henna painting done there too-it isn't huge but is well set out. There are also the Horse, Camel and Architectural Museums-Cultural and Diving Villages-don't forget the camel and falcon by the mosque-though the falcon is more likely to be there on Saturday than Friday. Meena Bazaar is good fun too to look at the beautiful Indian saris and such. Don't forget to climb the wind towers in the Bastikiya for a nice view of the creek too

Basta Art Cafe is always a good place to grab some lunch, lovely garden & nice food, esp their salads. Just around the corner they have a camel that you can get close up to & have a ride on if you want to pay. Oh and next to Basta Art Cafe is a camel burger joint. I couldn't face it after stroking the camel so can't recommend.
