hi all - planning to hire a maid before the baby is born and was wondering if families install CCTVs in the house if they have a maid? i know a few people in my office who can actually see live in their smart phones...
i will be home for about 2-3 months and then the nanny shall be with the baby and was wondering if we should install the cam before we hire someone instead of doing it after four months and making it awkward for her.

I think this will be a better decision as you are going to hire someone you never know about so I will recommend you to have the CCTV cameras in your home.

Hi, I suspect my maid is stealing when I am out. That's why I installed CCTV camera in my home. I think for security purpose we should install cameras. I got these system in a very reasonable prices from TVDIT.

I would install cameras before you employ your maid.I have seen afew very disturbing programmes in recent times, and the carers always have this great loving attitude and behind the parents back they can be very cruel. Not saying this will happen to the OP ofcourse, but if the maid has nothing to hide then camera's shouldnt be a problem.

Would you install a camera if you asked the maid to look after a million pounds? I see it as the same thing as her looking after your child. There have been lots of horror stories reported on maids and children. Its a no brainer. My CFO has huge amount of money going across his desk and in the company safe. There is no camera trained on his desk. I like to see and expect the best in people rather than the worst. Thats my view too, but when a baby cant speak its better to be safe than sorry.

I like to see and expect the best in people rather than the worst. That's great kelly1814 but you've just hired your first maid. After you've employed a few you might be a bit more wary. I didn't like the idea of holding a maid's passport until I had one abscond.....

There may not be a camera trained on his desk but your company will get audited on a regular basis to make sure he's not cooking the books. It's a safeguard to help protect your company from any bad egg employees. Just as cameras are a safeguard to help protect children.

Little fox I truly and clearly agree with your opinion . Even I have a full time but my home is not under the CCTV The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.” - Ernest Hemmingway . Saggi_1 I follow this words . Personally I wouldn't. It might make the maid/nanny resentful, and you cant watch her all the time. What about when she goes to the shops with the LO or is in a room un-censored by camera? And how would you feel if your boss watched your every move? Not great I think. It's just a yukky way to start a meaningful and important relationship with someone who is so close to your family. If you can't trust her enough to leave your baby without spying on her, you can't trust her enough full stop. On a separate note, if I were an employer I wouldn't look to kindly on my employee (you!) sitting watching baby tv all day! You could get yourself into a heap of trouble there. As a compromise, you could have a baby monitor over her cot/crib that has an app you can watch from your phone, and check on her at nap-time or whatever. I would worry about your own sanity, I'm thinking of that friends episode where Ross and Rachel are out to dinner and have his mum and their baby over by the bar - they cant concentrate on anything and are stressed and critical of their babysitter. I hope you find resolution. Good luck OP

A Rancher, what is the 'real world'? Just curious! And yes, put in cameras, better to be safe than sorry. I once had to set up a camera to see the maid...only once, it took all of 3 hours to see what she had done and put her on a plane. Fortunately no babies were hurt. I wish that I had done it 18 months earlier. It is your home, if she does not like it then stuff her. what was she doing? She was checking her messages on the phone that she stole from me and then she had a rendezvous with the Gardner in the majlis after serving him a platter of my fruit......and she had my stereo on with thumping disco music whilst she strutted her stuff, and I witnessed her IGNORING my calls on the landline. Btw she had done this whilst locking the kids in the other room the day before, that is why the camera was on.

I have a maid and no cameras but I'm a SAHM, if I worked then I'd probably install them. Not hidden, I'd be open about it but if I had a baby/ small child at home I'd like to see that all was well in their day. Plenty of nurseries and other businesses have cameras, I don't see it as any different and no invision of her privacy. I'd never put a camera in her room but anywhere else in the house, yes.

When I worked in a department store, I had a camera right over my shoulder monitoring my till and all transactions. And my bags were throoughly check each time I left the store. I don't see the problem in not putting 100% faith in a total stranger in charge of your most precious possession. But it would be nice to explain this in a nice way. Esp if she herself has children she would also want assurances if a stranger was looking after her kids. I worked in a bank and we had cameras everywhere including the sink area in the toilets ! the only place that didnt have cameras were the cubicles ! I think there was actually a post on here that said as long as you get permission from the police I think, you can install a camera in your house.

You're not spying on someone if you make them aware the cameras are there. I really don't see an issue if it brings peace of mind to be honest. It must be very difficult for new mothers to leave their new babies so soon and why shouldn't mums be over protective?

Why hire someone if you dont trust them? You have a few months to see how she is with your bay, surely you can judge if you are happy with her care giving and as a person without having to spy on them and make them feel like a criminal?

I have several friends who have put in cameras. Its a live feed that they can access online so from laptop, phone, etc.- great for peace of mind. They check in every once in a while. I don't see why an employer would mind, lots of people check their messages at work and this is more important. OP- If I had a baby, I would absolutely install cameras before going back to work.

I see nothing wrong with it. I'm fortunate enough that I can stay with my 3 month old and 3 year old and be the sole caregiver for my children. Not every woman can do the same. If I had to leave my baby with a nany no matter how 'trustworthy' she may seem, I will absolutely put cameras and especially if the child is at an age where he/she is unable to express themselves. We unfortunately live in a society where children have been abused and mistreated by their own relatives let alone strangers hired to care for them. I will never be 'too cautious' when it comes to my children and I really don't care who it might offend. Our children are the most valuable things in our lives and if I have to put cameras in every corner of my house to ensure that they are safe and happy, I will do so. But thats just me ;)

so we plan to get an experienced person who can be both nanny and look after the house... but priority will be baby... i would tell her about the cam before we hire her and also its not to go crazy about every move and watch constantly - its just to have some peace of mind and check once in a while ... we not planning to cover every part of the house... certainly not her room or any bathrooms... just the main entrance (incase someone sneaks into the house, a friend had some bad experiences with awesome maid getting someone over) and the living room or where the baby will be most of the times.... its not that i wouldnt trust the nanny or have trust issues - i just want to know if its ok and do people really keep cams for baby when they get back to work in three months?

If the op has the cameras in place before the maid comes and puts it to the maid that they are not watching her but rather want to be able to see the baby from work because they miss the baby and tell her that a lot of nurseries offer this facility, then the maid won't feel she's being watched and wont be resentful. People can waste a lot of time at work in all sorts of ways. If a mum is able to check on her child every couple of hours and feel happy that the child is ok, she's probably going to do a better job overall than if she was sitting, fretting and imagining all sorts of horrible things happening to the baby. For outings, what about a camera on the maid's head like a miner's lamp :-)

If it was up to me then i'd put camera's left right and centre whether it's illegal or not, at the end of the day someone will be looking after your child especially since they can't talk so god knows what they can do to them. After seeing a horrific video I don't think I'll ever leave my child with anyone until they can talk and express their feelings. Sorry if it sounds harsh but trying not to be.

Most people hire a maid with childcare experience to look after their child. In the real world, few can afford the salary that a properly trained nanny would require. A lot of nurseries offer parents the facility of being able to check on their child during the day through web cams so it's entirely reasonable to be able to do the same from your own home. It's difficult to leave a 2-3 month baby with anyone to go back to work so let's not make the op feel bad about her decision. We don't know her circumstances and are in no position to judge.
