Dear all,

Hope you are all well.

This is my first pregnancy and my husband is concern about my 3 cats (adopted from rescue centers) and my pregnancy.
A healthy baby is our priority but can we have this without giving away pets? I already in love with my cats and been with me for a year now...I am really hoping to keep them till my baby grows and bring them back home with us.

Because of this concern, I have a torch test BEFORE pregnancy and below is the result:
CMV IgG 122.7 au/ml positive
Rubella IgG 83.2 iu/ml positive
Toxoplasma IgG .3 iu/ml non-reactive
HSV IgG >2 ru/ml negative

Even I have a non reactive result, I still do some precaution such as cleaning the litter tray with globes, with mask, daily cleaning of litter tray, wash hands thoroughly, feed my cat indoor food and sometime (once in a month) canned tuna on water..

What else I need to do to become safe?
Should we do anothe test to make sure?
Can pregnant women and cats can't live together?

Please advise...

Hassli

I am not sure about costs for the test in UAE, but it wouldn't be cheap as it would need to be sent abroad, and there would be a consult fee from your vet as well. You need an 'allwormer', the brand doesn't matter, but best to get from your vet, not the supermarket. As long as it treats roundworms & tapeworms. Re: toxo test= It means they are negative at the time of the test, but they could still become positive in the future. HTH!

Thank you champagneblonde for this information... Now, my DH is the one cleaning the litter tray... Do you have an idea how much is the toxo fee for each cat.. I have them for a year now and I'm a cat woman since childhood.. If I have extra fund would send them for this toxo test :) does it mean that once they are found negative, then they will never develop this particular virus ? Also, what is the most effective dewormer.. Thank you so much.. :)

I am a Veterinary Nurse & worked right through my pregnancy at a vet clinic, coming in to contact with cats daily. The main concern is the faeces, so I just never cleaned the litter trays at work (nice way to get out of it for 9 months!), someone else did. The other risk is actually gardening, as you may come into contact with faeces if you're digging in your garden where a stray cat may have toileted... I wouldn't be worried, just be hygienic & cautious... If you're really concerned... You could always ask your vet to test your cats for Toxoplasma & then if they're negative, then you've one less thing to worry about!! ALSO, keep the cats worming treatments up to date (every 3 months), as roundworms can be harmful to pregnant women & small children, but don't really affect others...

My sister has 5 persian cats and two healthy boys. Just let your DH clean the litterbox during pregnancy and you wont have problems. Her boys love the cats and their part of the family. :)

Your baby will only benefit in life growing up with animals. Well said Nomad :) Hassli, I have 2 indoor cats and now have a healthy 4 month old baby. The cats totally adore her and she loves to sit and watch them playing. She is now reaching out to them when they come close to her and gives a big smile :) Just like the others have said, use gloves when doing the litter tray or get your husband to do it for you. Other than that enjoy your cats and let them do everything they would normally do. Mine loved cuddling up with me through my pregnancy and would often curl up around my bump and purr :) Please don't get rid of them just because you are worried, everything will be fine as long as you take precautions with their poo :) Good luck with your pregnancy.x.

As the others have said, pregnant women and cats can definitely live together. I had cats during both my pregnancies. Just wear gloves or wash hands well after litter changes if you're the one doing them and it should be fine. From what I was told, with toxoplasmosis usually you've already contracted it from the cat if it carries it (you wouldn't know - just mild cold symptoms if anything) and then you don't have to worry about it during pregnancy. The risk is if the cat(s) have it and you haven't had it yet (which is unlikely), but as they are indoor cats the risk is very low as it's usually spread between cats when they are outside through other cat's faeces. So definitely don't worry. Both my babies absolutely loved the cats from when they were extremely small. Congrats!

Hassli Hassli you are doing a great job and honestly one just has to take precaution when cleaning the litter tray.As another poster said get your husband do this chore for you ;) a good excuse to get him to help around the house. Your baby will only benefit in life growing up with animals. All the best. N

When I was pregnant with my first baby I had 2 cats and it was fine. I asked my husband to clear out the litter tray and if he was away then I used rubber gloves. We had our cats until my LO was 8 months when we moved to Dubai and never had any problems. Our cats were short haired so I don't know if that makes a difference with your cats being long haired. I could not have beared to have given my cats away when I was pregnant so I hope you don't have to do that. Perhaps other ladies on here know more...
