hi ladies
I am flying to oz in about a week and a half with my DS who is turning 4 months next week. Unfortunately we couldn't get a night flight so we are travelling out at 10am and then arriving at 6am in Sydney. Any tips for adjusting to the time zone and helping him to sleep on the plane?
Also, what do you dress your LO's in for a flight? A sleepsuit? Is that warm enough or should I put something on underneath?
Thanks ladies! Any other flying tips welcome too!
PS - for those ladies who know about our sleep issues, we're getting there...last few nights he has gone down around 7-730 and slept until at least 1am and only waking about 2-3 times as opposed to 6-7 times...YAY!

Hello, I am just curious; why is it not good to have a long day time naps?

We flew with DD at 4 months and was easier than we expected. We bought a go anywhere blackout blind and made a canopy over the bassinet as another poster suggested and it worked a treat. Some EK aircraftes though you have to stick it to the overhead tv screen as the wall is bumpy. We put DD in a vest and babygro and took a 1tog sleeping bag. Take extra outfits though as we had a few accidents, think it may have been the pressure! Also we checked in our pram and took her in her sling through the airport which let her sleep and left me free hands. Dubai airport really helpful staff when they see you have a baby. Have a great trip.

Once you get there, try and get him straight into bright noisy sunlight and keep it bright as much as possible, he'll be more tired by day, don't be tempted to let him sleep too long for his naps (no more than 2 hours, this part is important) and do put him down to bed slightly early for the first few nights.in as dark a room as possible. Get him up right on 7am the next morning even if you're tired (am sure there will be grandparents happy to take him off your hands) All the best, am sure you are dreading the flight but looking forward to the break you'll get when you arrive! Ditto, ditto, ditto! Have always done this for DD the times we've taken her to Oz and never had any issues with jetlag in this direction. Everyone (at home) will suggest you let him sleep longer the day you arrive but stand your ground and make sure he doesn't get too much daytime sleep. Do the sunlight thing every morning for the first few days. Also, I bought the Gro Anywhere Blind (Toys R Us) and at first DH scoffed at the purchase... well, it has been one of the BEST purchases I've made. Both our trips we've used it and its been absolutely necessary and even DH has admitted how wonderful it is! I suggest this because when you stay with friends you don't know how dark their rooms are and if you're like me, when we stay at friend's houses in Oz I was always stressing about how dark the rooms were for little miss. Now I don't have to. Your little guy will be ok on the flight... ahhhh how I remember that age when flying with DD was so easy and relaxing. Not so now though! :D

thanks for all the fab advice kiwi as always and Twokids too - definitely will bring a spare change of clothes for me too! Going to stay with friends first as we're surprising Dad for his 70th bday a few days later so can't land straight on the grandparents doorstep unfortunately LOL!

Lucky you, it gets harder when they can walk but have a short attention span (for DD this was 18 months)! I agree with KS great advice. I dressed my DS in a long sleeved sleep suit with feet, but you could go without the feet and use socks. Also remember a change of clothes for parents and bub! Have a great trip:)

4 months is a great age for flying back, I assume you have a bassinet seat. I would dress him in a sleepsuit, and take a few spares for the flight. Also pack a bag of dummys and some swaddles. The first half will be trickier as the plane will be quite bright so if you have a large muslin or even a pashmina you can try and rig up a canopy of sorts to darken his area int he bassinet. The noise and vibration of the plane is very calming and blocks a lot of background noise so I'd say he will sleep well. Forget time zones and concentrate on him sleeping as much as possible during the flight (basically straight on boob when he wakes and for the second half of the flight pretty much boob, swaddle, back in bed as much as possible). At that age we had baby einstein on the laptop, and a few of his favourite tummy time toys so he could have some tummy time on the floor during the flight. Keep yourself hydrated, ask the staff for a large bottle of water when you get on the plane (if you're flying emirates the staff to oz are usually really helpful this way) Once you get there, try and get him straight into bright noisy sunlight and keep it bright as much as possible, he'll be more tired by day, don't be tempted to let him sleep too long for his naps (no more than 2 hours, this part is important) and do put him down to bed slightly early for the first few nights.in as dark a room as possible. Get him up right on 7am the next morning even if you're tired (am sure there will be grandparents happy to take him off your hands) All the best, am sure you are dreading the flight but looking forward to the break you'll get when you arrive!
