thanks for your responses ladies...appreciate it. as u have pointed out i guess DD has developed a pretty strong sleep association...i had supply issues in the start and to increase supply I started putting her on breast as much as i could...even letting her nurse for comfort ...i have to admit it did help a lot with increasing the milk supply...i did not mind co sleeping since she only woke up every 3-4hrs for feeds but for past 3 days she keeps waking up...she will b 4months this weekend. ilovewine----my DD has started rolling over recently as well so as u said may b that has something to do with it,i have tried shhh-ing her back to sleep without success but could b i should shhh for a bit longer, may b that will help...also her naps are the same! never more than 45min at a time. thanks kiwispiers and sydneygal...i am going to try the Pantley pull out..hope it works for us,am a bit nervous.... imolinar----how often does your little one wake up? and how is that working out for you at 8months of age...thanks.

echoing kiwi, it does sound like more of a sleep association which normally develops around that age. My DS was the same but his problem was the dummy and I would have to put it in every 45 mins...although sometimes he would manage to launch himself (no arms as still swaddled) onto the dummy next to him haha which was hilarious to watch on the video monitor :) Def start trying to settle without the association - pat/shush, or if bub is definitely hungry, feed and remove your nipple before he falls asleep. The Pantley pull out method works for some, but you have to be persistent....as they get sleepy you pull out breast/dummy and hold their chin shut for a few seconds, if they root again, do it again...and again and again until they fall asleep without it in their mouth....4 months is too early to sleep train....we ended up doing this around 6-7 months which sorted it out in one night for us but we were lucky, it often takes longer and if it had I'm not sure I could have done it! But ongoing sleep deprivation is awful so do what feels right for you.

Not all babies but many of them yes. Whether its a dummy a bottle or a boob, sucking to sleep can become a dependency from around the 4 month mark when their sleep patterns change to become more like adults (waking almost fully at the end of each cycle). ilovewine, you should always offer both boobs anyway (fine if baby doesn't want both but do offer) but I don't think its a calories by day thing, its a sleep association. When I introduced solids my baby started consuming enormous amounts and energy dense foods, but it made zero difference to him waking for his dummy. It is quite normal for a baby to need a few night feeds for up to 12 months but the hourly waking is not hunger. I do think its a good idea to try other soothing first, but if that doesn't work then accept that your baby is hungry and feed them, just try not to let them fall asleep while still sucking if you can help it.

Hi uhad83, My 4 month old's sleeping has gone out the window too. He used to sleep up to 12hrs some nights, now, he wakes every 2 to 3 hours! I would nurse him back to sleep every time. Ive read about sleep regression, that he is losing sleep due to developmental changes (he started rolling over) and all sorts of things. Apparently its supposed to last a week or so. Last night i was reading an article about babies getting used to being fed every time they wake and it becoming a habit whether they are hubgry or not so DH and i decided to try something else. DS's first stir, DH went in and shhh'd him for about 10mins, he fell asleep without a feed and woke up 3hrs later when i did feed him. 2,5 hrs later he was up again and we ignored him. He wasnt crying, just moaning, dont know for how long, but he fell asleep again without a feed. He then woke up at 430am and i fed him. So all in all only 2 feds last night without much incident. I am going to be strict with his naps today ( DS only catnaps - 45mins per time), and am going to really push for a longer nap in the afternoon and then do the same tonight. Hopefully that helps. DS is ebf and only takes one breast per feed - 5-7mins and he is done. I am also going to change that today - going to offer him both breasts at every feed to see if that makes a difference. Perhaps he isnt getting enough calories during the day and makes up for it at night ...? I dont know! Its trial and error. HTH and good luck! If you find something that works, please share it.

My 8 month old is similar, does not go back to sleep without the breast in his mouth, but does not wake up every hour, it has improved a bit.
