I am 40+2 weeks, and I was scheduled to be induced at 41 weeks at Corniche Hospital in Abu Dhabi, that seems to be the policy there. I heard in some other countries they let you go up to 42 weeks or more, which it is what I would like to do, I dont really want to be induced as I want the delivery to be as natural as possible, dont want medicament, many ladies are induced and it does not work and end up with c-section which would my greatest nightmare. The doctor told me I am dilated 1 cm and the cervix is soft so she thinks the induction will work.
I was thinking of talking to OBG to delay to be induced for a few more days but they had told me yesterday the liquid is low and they are monitoring my BP since I have a lot of headaches for more than a week now and some blood and protein traces in my urine, my BP has gone slight up but within limits. So I am so stressed thinking what to do.
What have been your experiences?. How long have you been able to go without being induced?.

i dont like hearing stories of drs inducing women because their babies are large. it just doesn't make sense, our bodies can handle a lot more than the drs are giving us credit for these days. they really know how to scare women into making an appointment. and pitocin isn't the real thing. our body releases unbelievable amounts of adrenaline an oxytocin to help with the pain as well post natal depression.. edited by julzandrews on 14/09/2011

yes don't give up yet, i cant believe they would tell you your "liquid" is low how do they know that?. don't forget your due date is just an estimate. trust your instincts, and do some more research on inducing and natural childbirth.. there are so many sites that talk about it.

Don't give up hope yet, 5 days is a long time when you're 40 weeks pregnant, everything can change in a moment. I was in your shoes with my DS, 40+4 weeks pregnant with NO sign of any action and induction looming at 41 weeks... still hoping for a natural birth. Pineapple, hot curries etc weren't helping ;) On day 40+4 I went for accupuncture (Dr. Ou) as well as a sweep in desperation and baby was born at 3 a.m. the next morning, completely medication free birth. So based on my experience I would look into those two options. I have to add that my boy born at 40+5 weeks showed all the signs of being 'overcooked' - the placenta was apparently calcified and disintegrating, baby had dry skin and long nails etc etc. I was adamant that I didn't need an induction at 41 weeks as in some other countries they allow you to go to 42 weeks - but based on what I was told about the placenta I am very happy my son didn't stay in there another week - and this time (I'm pregnant again) I will not be complaining about the 41 week rule. Good luck!

I was induced at 40+5 weeks with baby no 3, he had no intention of coming out even after 3 sweeps! I really didn't want to be induced but went with medical opinion and glad I did as bubs was huge. I also was 1cm dialated and soft cervix but this had been the case since 38 weeks. They did a gel tab first at about 1am and then put on the oxitocin (sp) drip at 12pm baby was born at 2.14pm. I had no pain killers/epidural, the only drug given was the oxitocin I chose not to use gas and air as it made me sick the last two deliveries. So apart from the induction I gave birth to a 4.5kg 58.5cm baby with no other interference. At the end of the day it's about both you and bubs being healthy how ever s/he comes out, you will bond with and be in love with this little person.

I was absolutely adamant I didn't want to be induced and wanted the birth to be as natural as possible. I had protein in my urine and high BP, and eventually at 36+6 my doctor decided it was simply too dangerous to continue with the pregnancy as my health was at risk (and of course then the baby's) and I'd have to be induced. As soon as I knew this, I changed my opinion. I just wanted my baby out safely. I had a load of blood tests at the hospital that day, and was admitted that evening, and my doctor called not long after I was admitted to tell me my kidney and liver function was deteriorating thanks to the pre-eclampsia so we were definitely doing the right thing with the induction. Thankfully our baby was delivered safely and I was fine in the end. If you had no signs of pre-eclampsia, such as the protein or the high BP, then I'd say hang out for spontaneous labour if that's what you really want. But in my case, I went from teetering along the edges of PET to being at risk of serious illness in the space of a day or so. I know we all worry that doctors are over-cautious and interfere too much in this country, but think of the consequences of being too laid-back and not intervening when it may be necessary. All the best and I hope you get the delivery you want! And as H.A.K. says, all that matters is getting baby out safely. And keeping you safe.

I was induced at 40+10 due to the baby growing very large by then and having no liquid or space to move around in... unfortunately my cervix was adamantly tightly shut and hence had to have an emergency c-section... similar to u even i wanted a normal delivery with no medical intervention (not even pain killers) but when it came to choice regarding going with my principals or choosing to have my baby in a healthy way - I went with the latter... end of the day... it's not worth the risk of complicating your child's birth... :) all the best...

Can you ask to have a "sweep" first? It's where they sweep (not rupture) your membranes with a prostaglandin gel... then you trundle back off and hopefully go into natural labour. I had a natural birth at 40+2 with no sweep 4 years ago today (yaya!!!) and then my second was at 40+8, having had 2 sweeps, the first at 40+3 and then the second on the morning of the birth... in fact, DS dropped as I was leaving the hospital and I was in labour about an hour later (I had a home-birth hence why I *left* the hospital!). I was due for drip induction at 40+10, which I desperately wanted to avoid. Anyhow, there are a load of wives tales you can try out, which you can find by a quick google, but one thing that is meant to really help is acupuncture. I was booked in for acupuncture at 40+9, but didn't get round to it! In any case, you do have time. You're due and so it's a matter of days, not weeks... it may even be a matter of hours. I completely understand that slightly edgy, panicked feel of "I don't want to be induced", but even if you were to be, then you remain in control of your birth. Read up on it, inform yourself about your options and be at peace with the various scenarios that may or may not present themselves. Tell your DH what you want and don't want (like "I'm fine with X", "I'm ok with Y if it's really necessary" and "I categorically don't want Z and if anyone suggests it, step in and tell them not to (unless it's a medical emergency - not just convenience)"). Be realistic about what you may not want and keep that list to the barest of minimums. At the end of the day, regardless how how we do it, it's actually just about getting a healthy baby out safely.

I was induced at 40 + 10 in Melbourne with my second child. Both of my labours were induced, with the drip and ended in natural birth. I was in good health but my second child, my son, had no plans to emerge! If your health is being affected I would recommend listening to your doctor or getting a second opinion. Best wishes:)
