Since about the age of 2 weeks, doctor told us DS had a hernia which is the reason for a protuding belly button. This has now grown to the extent that it protudes a whole 15 cm! The paed seems to think this is normal but I wanted to check is others have experienced something similar with their LO's.

Also my mum said when we were babies we used to wear a tight belt/bandage around it to make it recede but paed says this is no longer done. Any thoughts on this please?

TIA!

preemies are more likely to get a hernia because they aren't always developed in the tummy, bowel etc areas. two friends back home had babies with a hernia. My DS had a hydrocele. The norm is that a hernia of the belly button should be gone by the time they are 1. One of the babies had their's go back to normal, the other had to have a little surgery done because she was 3 and still had it.

Dont worry. Mine was born 9 weeks early and it took a couple of months to go away on its own. Dont bother binding, you dont need to. It takes care of itself.

its nothing to worry about, my DD has too from the time she was 2weeks and she is now 3months. Her Dr told me not to worry about at all though it used to scare the **** out me at first, I was told it would normalise on its own as she grows. Umbilical hernias are normal so no need to worry

Ha ha, I did think that was pretty huge and possibly a typing error. 1.5 cm is nothing really, my daughters was about 3 cm and was fine in the end. I wouldn't worry about it and just let it decrease on it's own. Hope it gets better soon

My daughter had a herniated belly button too, it wasn't quite 15cm but it was big and made a funny squelching noise when you touched it. I was told she would 'grow into it' and she did, it suddenly started to shrink and now it is a perfectly normal belly button. I was told they are very common and it occurs when the abdominal walls are not yet completely formed. I think my daughters took a month or so to start decreasing in size.
