I just wasted to share my joy.........

On Monday morning my LO woke from his nap very quiet and not responding to me. I took his temp to find it was 34.6 so I threw him in the car and set off for DMMC. When we got there and I took him out the car I could feel the change in his temp, he was roasting. We got to see a pediatrician immediately who confirmed the change in his temp with it being 39.9. The Dr was extremely concerned by this having never seen a temp so high in such a young baby. He stripped my baby, laid wet towels on him, gave him medication to bring his temp down and told me he thought it was meningitis. He said he could not confirm it without tests but advised there was no time for tests. He wanted to give him an antibiotic shot that is given in an emergency. As soon as this was given he told me to take him straight to the emergency department at city hospital and told me he hoped my LO survived the journey. By the time I arrived there my LO was all floppy, he couldn't even hold his head up. He was taken straight through and checked over. His temp was still 39 despite the meds given at DMMC and he hadn't eaten all morning so an IV was inserted, his breathing became uneven so he was given oxygen and the tests started. He was admitted and we were told the test results would be back in a few hours. The next few hours seemed to be the longest of my life only to be told all his blood tests were clear. He was then sent for an x-ray which showed a shadow on his chest but they were unsure what this was an blood tests were clear. They said they would retest the following day as most illnesses are so slow in showing with babies and would just have to manage his temp, fluids and breathing for now. The following morning more bloods were taken and they came back to confirm my LO has pneumonia. Antibiotics were started straight away but we were told there would be no improvement for a few days. The following day he came off his oxygen then that evening he had his first feed for almost 3 days. On Thursday morning he seemed to have a little of his cheeky self back and even smiled which melted my heart. This only lasted until they tried to give him his antibiotics and there was a problem with the IV: I have never heard him scream like that before in my life and would be very happy never to hear it again. The IV had become blocked and had to be removed and a new one put in which was a problem in itself with him being chubby. They did find a vein and after 4 goes the IV was in and the antibiotics started. As the day went on he became more and more alert and even wanted to play. By Friday morning he really was his old self even with the temp spikes that were still going on and his raspy breathing. This morning the consultant was so happy with his improvement he said I can take him home.

We are now home and he is fast asleep, having had very little in the hospital. I have a whole bag on meds for him and we are house bound until he gets the all clear but I really am over the moon for him to be well enough to come home. He certainly gave me a **** of a fright and I will never forget the feelings I had on Monday. I am so lucky he was such a big brave boy who has responded so well to treatment. Mummy really is so proud of him!!

So glad to hear your boy is doing well! Hope he gets completely healed soon! Big hug to you for being such a brave mum About 2 months ago my son got a fever - nothing serious but whilst driving to the hospital, it was hard to hold the tears in ..... it can be so distressing when your LO is not doing well and nothing you can do but wait .... and pray Big hugs to you and you baby
