Hi ladies. I was breastfeeding my newborn son in the Organics Cafe in Dubai Mall and was asked to move out of sight. I refused as I was having lunch with my family and also a bit indignant as I could not see the harm. I was using a nursing cover so nothing on display (I am very careful about that!!) It has however now got me thinking that maybe there are some sort of rules for breastfeeding in public in Dubai Malls that I'm not aware of? I know the bathrooms all provide nursing rooms but I do not want to feed my baby there. If they provide these rooms and I therefore expected to use them rather than feeding in public even if covered up? Am I ok to carry on as I have been and nurse in cafe's etc if I need too? TIA

I have never ever breastfed my DD in a toilet nor changing room nor baby room and I never will! Eating is the most natural thing in the world and as Mothers we should not be ashamed to feed our babies when they are hungry, and nobody should make you feel awkward about it! If anyone dare to tell me that "it is not allowed", they will hear some profanities coming out of my mouth :/: This is something I feel very strongly about! The first few times as a new Mother can be daunting, but you will soon gain your confidence and things will go smoothly! Get yourself a nursing cover, and get on and do your thing and feel proud! I have BF'ed DD2 just the other day in a Dr's waiting room, just took my breast out, latched my DD and threw a muslin cloth over my shoulder! The waiting room was full, and nobody batted an eye lid :)

I'm not sure (I don't actually live in the UAE) but I'll contact Sian and ask if she can give me some info to post (she's not an EW member) and I'm sure she would be happy for you to email her too with any queries. In case you didn't know about it here is a list of breastfeeding support in the UAE http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_pregnancy_babies_Breastfeeding_Support_In_Dubai_8935.aspx

vonvon would you be happy to send a quick email to sian.breastfeedingqa(at)gmail(dot)com regarding your experience? She has recently been in touch with the owner of organics regarding their BFing policy and would really appreciate knowing more about your experience, she can also pass on details to you regarding your rights as far as breastfeeding publicly in the UAE. Hi Kiwi! Is there anywhere we can access info on your rights with breastfeeding in public here, or could Sian maybe post it up on here somewhere? Im a new first time mom and have just started venturing out to the malls with my LO but don't really know where i stand with BF there and would hate to be put in a position like OP was as I know it will just put me off wanting to go out at all! Feeling pretty house-bound as it is and starting to go a little crazy!! TIA! :) xx

As aparently nursing in public- if done discretly - is allowed here, why don't a few nursing moms with their babies meet for coffee there after ramadan? - just a thought. Also I find it really strange that of all the places in the UAE they would make a fuss at the Organic Cafe. A bit "unsmart" considering that most of their client base would tend to nurse their babies, going with the wholesome and green mindset one would associate wih an organic store and restaurant. On top of that I am sure they would have had no problem serving a woman wearing a top showing cleavage to her navel as can be seen in malls around here, but they tell a mother off for doing with her breasts what they are naturally made for(feed baby) while being covered so no one actually sees any flesh.... edited by Lilli34 on 23/07/2012

This is the second time I have heard this about Organics at DM. How ridiculous! As PP says, we used to meet there for bf meets. I have bfed my 3 kids all over Dubai and not had any problems at all. If I were you ai would *definitely* complain to the management - preferably Nils, the GM.

Shocked and disappointed by this. I bf DD1 everywhere and am now bf DD2 and refuse to sit in a smelly toilet to do so. I use a cover and choose a corner in a cafe etc Bf is encouraged in the Koran so am not sure why you would be making anyone uneasy if you are being discreet.

I am sorry. But you r not doing anything wrong even its ramadaan. As long u r covered up as u said, no one has the right to tell you rhat, how rude! If its the staff, then complain! If its people just ignore!

sorry, who asked you move? a member of staff or another person? My dd is 20 months and I've breastfed her practically every week at the Organics Cafe and no one has batted an eyelid. I'm astounded that somebody said something to you, I've never used a bf cover either. As far as I'm aware the La Leche League for Dubai still hold their meetings at Organics (you can find them on Facebook) so it's got to be one of the most BF friendly places here. So, no you were not doing anything wrong. If it was a member of staff then I would contact the owner and complain as loud as you can, if it was me I would have made a very loud fuss about it whoever it was that spoke to me. Please do not let it put you off feeding in public even though Ramadan is starting too, last year I fed my baby in the mall cafes even though they were closed off and once in MOE one of the staff came out of the kitchens saw what I was doing and then made me some tea whilst gesturing that I drink it behind my hands...!
