Hi ladies,
Do any of you have any tried and tested home methods/remedies for building the immune system to fight against colds? My 11 mth old DS has had constant on and off runny nose/cough for the past few months it seems. He'll be better and then in a few weeks it comes back. He is not at nursery, although does do activities with other kids. He eats very well and has a varied diet of healthy homecooked meals, is at the high end of the percentile charts and is strong and active. He is formula fed but was breastfed for 6 months. I just wish there was something else I could do to stop him getting sick or is this just normal? I have a natural childcare book from Oz which talks about using high grade cod liver oil - a teaspoon a day (fine from 6 months if on solids) to prevent colds and build the immune system and using Vitamin C. Anybody do anything like this, or have a good quality vitamin that's not full of parabens and other nasties?
thank you!

thanks ladies. I felt so bad this morning when I went to get him up....one whole nostril was so crusted over with dried snot, poor wee thing!! He does seem to like oranges so we're having alot of vitamin c rich food this week - even popped some goji berries into his porridge. twin-butterfly - the doc did prescribe Pediavit which he took for a while but it has got parabens in it so not too keen to give that too him all the time....the sleep issue is getting better, he's not fighting as much and as long as I stay there and have my hand on his back he goes straight to sleep, so am sure we'll be back to self-settling again very soon.

It used to drive me mad also but I think its normal. My daughter is almost three now and she went through a faze on non stop running nose around that age. Our doctor said its nomal to have up to 6 colds per year at that age. We didnt have that many but its helps their immune system in the long run. My daughter started nursery last Sept and I was dreading it but it hasnt been so bad, a few colds and a virus so far. I keep her on a multi-vitamin and have been giving her Manuka honey with UMF this winter.

DS is around the same age and when he got a cold (twice so far, through DH!), Dr prescribed Pediavit, a multi-vitamin complex. If you definitely want to go natural and he still does not take to citrus, kiwi which can be taken from 9 months onwards, has the same content of vitamin C as orange - I am holding all citrus until the 1 year mark as most of the stuff I have read recommends it from 12 months +. Hope your LO gets better - also wish I could help on the bedtime issue but unfortunately have the very same problem and now he is even ultra-clingy during the day ... hoping this phase will just pass ...

hey kiwis....yes, our doc mentioned that a few months ago and we got a purifier back then (she was worried our cat was the issue) wihch seemed to help at the time. This seems more like a cold as he also has a cough now too :( Although could also be all the dust and weather changes that we've been having. He seems pretty happy and still full of energy though at least...

Have you considered it might not be constant colds but actually allergy (dust related)? My guy has been like that the lat few months (clear drip, esp on windy days). Air puriifier has been a big help (get one with a HEPA filter), We're on vacation and it has vanished, wouldn't mind betting it returns when we get home.

thanks shjbelle - I recently tried citrus with some mandarins which wasn't a hit...but I'll definitely give orange a try. Yes he can chew quite well so I will give him some small pieces.

I regularly give DD fresh orange. Can your DS chew on his own? if yes, cut the oranges into small pieces to give him. If not, you can buy this http://baby-feeding.twenga.co.uk/baby-safe-feeder.html#hx=1&s=5&c=26afd&page=1 which is available at mother care. :D
