Morning

DD always had a a dry cough and this time its a chesty one. I know there has been a debate about cough medicine.
Which one can you recommend for a chesty cough?

TIA

yep if with runny nose it can be due to the snot running down the throat at night, could be reflux as suggested below, or could be a dust allergy etc. We recently bought an air purifier/humidifier as LO was getting a bit sniffly in the night and it seems to have helped, has made a big difference for friends with long term coughs. Its the Sharp Plasmacluster (model number depending on size of room) and we bought it from C4 (in Doha but I'm sure you could get it in Dubai), quite pricey but worth it. Also get your AC professionally cleaned, can harbour dirt and mould.

Try putting Vicks Vaporub on the soles of her feet at night - it works! I heard this too but on the heels.... I would give your DD heaps of water, saline nasal solution and humidifier like MDM Mom says. Don't be too quick with the cough medicine... look for med free honey drops usually found in pharmacies. If you have it, a nebuliser with saline solution would be great. I wouldn't have thought milk (as another poster suggested) would be a good idea as it creates mucus... if it continues in chest for more than 3 days then I would definitely do to see the doc.

How old is your DD? DS had cough so many time the doc diagnosed him with asthma. I changed doctor and he explained that he has runny nose and the mucus is running down at the back to his throat and this makes him cough. Not asthma at all. Ideally he would have to blow his nose but he can't. So the advice was: ocean spray and aspirator lots of times a day. You need to loosen the mucus and get it out. Vicks is also good for rubbing the chest and humidifier for the room. Humidity helps to loosen the phlegm. We gave him cough syrup only when his cough was so bad it made him throw up. Prospan doesn't work though, it only made him cough more. The doc said if we stop the cough the phlegm can reach his lungs and he can get pneumonia. But if the cough lasts too long you want to get her checked out to make sure it's not a bacterial infection.

We've been back and forth to the peadiatrican and it's not asthma. It's bizarre because she coughs throughout the day but this weird episode only happens at night and for the past week, only once. What she does actually sounds like whooping cough and I might mention it to the paed next time we go because she wasn't fully vaccinated as a baby (reaction to vaccine).

Those of you with kids with allergy-related coughs, did your children almost seem to choke they coughed so hard? DD started with a cough about a month ago which lessened somewhat but she's been left with something that affects her at night only. It's like her lungs are completely empty and can't seem to pull in any air and it's terrifying for her (and us!). She would shoot out of bed in a panic unable to breathe. It's eased of a bit now but still happens once a night. She's been on different cough medicines, anti-allergy medicines and pills, had a blood test and a chest x-ray and is now on 2 inhalers a day which don't seem to have much effect. She's only been on them for 2 days so I don't know if their effect is supposed to be instant or takes a while. That sounds like Asthma! Go have it checked! My son has it and was detected at age 2. It's a horrible sensation, I'd have her seen asap.......

My DD been coughing for 3 months n that too only in night, she was on cough syrup or either zytrec anti allergy Medicine.Every time I take her to doctor he keeps on recommending zytrec when he realized it's was some allergy but it never worked then I decided to change the doctor n went to ent specialist instead of her peds and we came to know it's because of late dinner n bottle feeding in night so the food doesn't digest n she start having secretion in throat n that make her cough Asa I start giving her dinner 2 hrs before sleeping time n stop bottle feeding in night I can really see a difference. Hoping that this info will b helpful :)

It's no longer recommended that children under 6yrs be given cough medicine and in the UK medicines such as Medised which were previously allowed from 12 mths have now changed to 6+ years. I have 2 kids with asthmatic tendencies so we get a lot of coughs and have been told numerous times by peads that cough medicines don't work and can be dangerous for littlies. You just have to wait it out, relieve symptoms with natural remedies and if there are breathing difficulties, get to the docs quick. I find Vicks vapour rub effective (if your LO is under 2 you can buy a baby version, or mix the normal one with their usual moisturising lotion to dilute it) and also a couple of drops of Olbas oil in a bowl of hot water as an inhalation is effective. For my 9 mth old, I put the hot water bowl under his cot while he is sleeping and it helps a lot. I haven't tried MumofTwo's suggestion but definitely will next time ;-)

No medicine . Take your dd to the doctors see what they say. My dd use to get lots of coughs then had a dew chesty ones. Then they suggested to use a asthma pump it's a purple disc that contains the ingrediants of the brown and blue inhaler and when ever she gets a cough she takes one puff every 12 hours and it goes away. Now she is 10 years old she hardly uses it and hardly ever get any coughs. Better then all the medicines some docs fobbed me off with. Agree! Mine used to cough all the time and it turned out to be allergy related and they needed asthma pumps.

IF (and only if!) your child is older than 1 year old, try this ( works on adults, too) - DO NOT GIVE HONEY TO A CHILD YOUNGER THAN 1 YEAR OLD - even if it's pasteurized. Use a glass or ceramic pan - NO METAL OR PLASTIC Peel and slice thin one ripe pineapple ( to find a ripe pineapple at the grocery store, pull off one leaf from the top - if it comes out without resistance, it's ripe - if you can't find one, let it sit at home for 2-3 days and try the leaf-pulling again until that happens) - it won;t work if the pineapple is not ripe. Layer the slices with lots of honey drizzled over each layer - use the whole fruit Cover with film and refrigerate overnight - very important! The next day, strain the syrup formed at the bottom and give your child up to 4 teaspoons a day (for a younger child maybe 1-2 a day) Keep refrigerated up to 3 days - make a new batch after that - it won't go bad but it won't keep its properties. You can use the pineapple on desserts - try it diced over ice cream ;) This is a fantastic recipe, SAVE IT!

Hi, Do you have any peadiatrican that you can give a call and ask for advice. Both of my children have the same trouble with coughing but one has Prospan + Fluimucil and the other is on Muscosolvan.

Mucosolvan to break up the phlegm and then robitussin to bring it up. However ask the pharmacist as it depends on the age of your child
