I've had both my deliveries at city and it has always been a great experience. Plan as if you're staying at a hotel. A few days worth of clothes for you and baby, baby blankets, your toiletries, phone charger, nursing cover and pillow if you are using either. Even if you're not going to nurse, the boppy pillow comes in very handy for sitting on especially for the car ride home. They provide little tubes of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, towels, pads/underwear/liners, slippers, diapers, baby wipes. There's no wifi and you will get bored without Internet for 2 days lol so see if you can get a data plan for a month or pay as you go. Let me know if you have any more q's about city!

Thanks so much for giving me some quantities. Do you think one small pack of nappies, one pack of maternity and 20 or so breast pads will be enough? Have also been told to bring either a camelbak bottle (or similar) or bendy straws. Will try to forget lipbalm :)

I always take some nice bedware for me. Nighties rather than pyjamas as I find them more comfortable and with thin straps rather than sleeves so easy to breastfeed in. A dressing gown and slippers to wear if you leave your room. Bed socks in case your feet get cold (common after an epidural if you have one). I take everything of my own, nappies, pads, breast pads, cotton, body wash etc as I invariably don't like the hospital brand. DON"T FORGET LIP BALM. It's miserable being in hospital for any reason without lip balm. Take baby clothes that are easy to put on, when you are getting to grips with their gorgeous floppy little heads it's easier to have baby grows/sleep suits that have fasteners up the front or side rather than over the head. I also take all my own food as I find hospital food minging and totally inadequate for recovering from the rigours of having a baby or starting milk production. Nothing particularly gas producing though - not good for you or baby! Good luck.

I deliver my baby in the Iranian hospital.Actually you don't need to bring anything with you. Only the clothes for yourself and baby while going out. I had my cosmetic bag/ hair brush/small face towel, phone charger.I found it much easier to use hospital nighties also they provide disposable underwear and i did't have to worry if i lost sth there. For baby hospital provide clothes, cap, blankets.

3 outfits for the baby, and a couple of swaddles if you plan on swaddling. We did skin to skin so didn't actually dress the baby at all while in hospital. Just put in a nappy and swaddled whenever not on my chest (which wasn't very often), many hospitals provide disposable undies which personally I would use, saves ruining our own. If you bring your own, brings some that come right up to your belly button just in case you end up woth a c-section as the low rise ones sit right on your incison. Best things I brought was my own pillows, teabags and fresh milk. For my first baby, we also brought a duvet and mattress for my husband to sleep on the floor beside my bed, but with my second he didn't stay the night as we had a toddler at home. I wore the hospital gowns for labour, as thats messy stuff and really, you don't want to keep whatever you were wearing. Afterwards nighties are easier than pajamas. Also slippers. I had two bags packed, one small backpack with things for during labour (snacks, drinks etc), and another large suitcase that we left in the car until afterwards when we checked into our room. I brought my own shampoo, conditioner and bodywash although the hospital did provode it all, but I'd rather use my own. I also packed a multipoint plug and extension cord as you end up woth so many things to charge (phone, camera, laptop etc). You should maybe pack for 4 nights, just incase of a c-section. You never know. Oh and I also brought my own nappies and creams etc for the baby as the hospital used J&J products which I personally woudn't use on a newborn, we just did nappy changes with cotton wool and water, and used our own nappy cream. We opted not to bath our babies at all while in hospital but if you would lke to bath it then maybe bring your own baby wash, or request they just use water.

Reviving this thread. One question I have is how many clothes to pack for the baby, how many undies for me etc etc. I am struggling to make sense of the quantities. I think I'll be staying in the hospital for two nights as that seems standard here.

I ordered online from the US and had them delivered. Are not heavy. I used drugstore.com but I am sure many folks keep them.

Hi barboram! Nice to know your bag is coming together nicely. Don't forget to pack any simple clothes of your own that you wish to wear(comfortable sleeping shirts, etc) as an alternative to hospital gowns.

Definitely straws as someone mentioned earlier. If you are drinking water from a glass / bottle it makes it a lot easier! I think I seen someone had mentioned on another site dry hair shampoo ... probably a life saver when you don't have the energy to wash your hair!!

We took snacks for both DH and I but even with a sip of water, the next contraction bought it straight back up... So you may not actually be able o snack on much thru labour but certainly have snacks there for after! Hospital supplied me steal pads but for when you get home, I used the mother care pack that had loads in it or about 40 aed. They were like boats but seriously they were the most comfortable of all I tried the first cpl of days home. Hospital had baby clothes and nappies, but we took some of our ow stuff in like a wrap, mittens and beanie for him to wear so it would get his scent on it and DH took them home next day for dogs to sniff and get ready for our rival home. We also took going home outfit for both DS and I. Some lucky women may get to go home in non maternity stuff, but that wasn't m case... I took my most fav maternity pants and a nice top to go home in. In the end it was middle of summer and we left hospital at 11pm so who really cares what I went home in! I got straight into pjs when we walked in the door! Lol. Undies you don't mind throwng out they may get stained. I was boiling in labour so much so I ripped off hospital gown and DH had to get cool flannel for my chest n face, but good idea re socks as we are all very different. I-pod n doc to have some your fav tunes playing either in labour or in ward later ... Tv can be boring! All the best for your birth!

Tucks medicated towelettes - huge help post-delivery. Dark chocolate which I ate during labour - got expensive Valronha one so felt good :). Disposable cotton granny pants - great to throw away. Socks - feet were so cold during labour and useful in room later too. Towel hairband to keep hair off my face during labour. Chocolates to gift staff and to serve visitors. Camera. Camomile tea for myself and visitors. Magazines to read in room. Change of clothes for DH in case he will stay with you and you go into labour unexpectedly. I had a big bag...and my DH was coming back with stuff every time he went home :)

biscuits and cake, chocolate and sweets, more biscuits.... I remember I was ravenous post delivery for days after and having some choice biscuits to eat was bliss. my favourite visitor came with some homemade cake and picked me up a large cup of tea from the hospital cafe! if you like tea with milk the take some fresh milk with you as its normally those horrid pots of evaporated milk. take some straws or juice boxes with straws for drinking during labour. a small mirror so you can see baby's head crowning (it's an incentive to keep going at the end!) I also found peppermint oil and bergamot really refreshing to sniff (dabbed on a tissue) and it kept my head clear. and yy to the sports bottle for squirting warm water on yourself when you wee!

Cotton underwear....the one they gave me (disposable one) in the hospital right after delivery gave me a very bad rash on my tummy edited by emanuela on 22/01/2012 if you're having a planned c section, make sure you have 'granny' undies. meaning a high, high waist so they'r not touching the incision - ouch

I was sitting at my OBGYN appointment this morning, and DH leaned over and said he thought it was time I packed the hospital bag, and could I make sure I included some red bull for him to get [b'>him[/b'> through the labour??? I have to admit it was hilarious - my last labour only lasted about 4 hours - so it wasn't particularly taxing on him, so goodness knows what he is expecting this time! But to add to your list - and you may have it, and was only interested in suggestions for 'you' .. but my baby list (I like to be self sufficient) baby clothes (particularly if due soon given the cold snap we are experiencing), I took all my own nappies as well (although they do tend to supply these), cotton balls and a bowl for holding warm water (nappy changes), muslin cloths, swaddling blankets, baby towels. Their first toy (which I typically buy and have 1st photo's with), carseat. Nipple cream, tens machine (if you are using one), contact details for family and friends (if you don't have these in your phone). Definitely the camera - and a laptop, and connecting cords so you can upload photo's and send them out if you want to do this while still in hospital. For the labour, drinks - if you want anything special (even a little chilli bin if you need them cold), chocolate, sweets or snacks that you like. Obviously, the hospital will give you meals (or you can order in), but I like to make sure I have some things that I like at hand. DH didn't want to leave us, so I didn't want him having to do runs for things either, so we literally had everything we needed last time when we left to go to hospital. HTH ETA: I used all of the above, along quite of bit of the other bits mentioned by other posters! edited by TanyaR on 22/01/2012

Glucose tablets for during labour. Gave me some good energy without mess of eating or digesting. Natural sponge which you can soak in mineral water and wet lips with. Food for hubby so he can't leave you and can give you all his attention without being distracted by hunger.

Chocolates for staff? More like chocolates for YOURSELF!! :D This may sound silly, but I'd pack some lip gloss to make you feel nice if you get some visitors.
