What should I be putting on my DS's eczema? He's 5 months old and has it quite bad in his creases (knees, arms, neck) The Dr. gave me some hydrocortisone cream to put on it and said not to use it for more than 2 days. It clears up nicely after that but of course comes back again a few days later. I bathe him with Cetaphil, but is there something I should be putting on it daily? Dr. also suggested E45 cream?

My little boy suffered terribly from eczema when he was 4 months and I used to put a finger tip of Brewers Yeast in each of his milk bottles....went after a few days...Would highly recommend this and is totally harmless. Its a powder and I got it in a health shop at home so I presume it would be available in a health shop here.

My almost 6 months old has also eczema. We consulted Dr Loubser at infinity clinic whom advised: This is a Copy and paste from his "eczema guidelines": Major components of eczema : Breakdown of normal barriers itch dryness secondary infection General measures: Avoid changes in temperature - heat and sweating worsen the itch keep the fingernails short Avoid any food that might make the skin worse in 20 minutes of ingestion Try to keep textured materials off the skin Use non biological washing powder Moisturisation (assume a night bath time): Tepid water long soak (20min)- this is to to allow the water to get inside the skin and then to be retained by the applied cream. Use mild soap (white dove, glycerine bar, oilatum etc..avoid perfumes) At the end of the bath- ADD oil. Olive oil, fragrance free mineral oil. Take out of bath and Pat dry Apply the medicated cream (in case of infected eczema, your dr will prescribe appropriate cream) to all the red or rough areas Apply a moisturiser (lipobase,Oilatum, vaseline intensive care) In the morning Apply the medicated cream Apply a moisturiser Medications: Consult your paed or dermatologist but could be Cortisone if eczema is infected may have to use oral antibiotic if the itch is sever, use of antihistaminic in all cases better if you consult... Hope that helps Papaye

heat was a big factor in DD's eczema, so try dressing bubs in very loose-fitting clothing. Unperfumed emolient creams such as Cetraben are great too at keeping it at bay. DD's and mine also responded really well to a homeopathic ointment that contained olive oil, chamomile and red clover. Fucidin is an anti-biotic, so would only appear to work on infected rashes. I don't think its prolonged use is any better than a hydrocortisone and you should always consult your doctor specifically with bubs in mind rather than self-medicating.

Have him wear as little clothing as possible, nappy only or nudey time when at home. Avoid perfumed washing powders (can you get the Carrefour own brand unperfumed washing liquid in Dubai?) put plain white vinegar in your fabric conditioner compartement as it help risnse detergent residue away (and obviously don't use fabric conditioners) Washing him with cetaphil is good. You don't have to have a wet bath (with water) daily. even once a week is fine. you can use the cetaphil as a waterless wipe on/wipe off wash, even water can be drying. I used to massage with pure almond oil, moisturise as a preventative thing not just when the eczema appears. Also look for allergens in your own diet (cows milk being a big potential one and also wheat). A dairy free diet can take as long as 3 weeks to show results which from experience, is a looooooong 3 weeks (you'd have to eliminate formula too if you are giving top-ups). Also when you do bathe him, make sure to dry all the creases well. Consider it could have developed a fungal infection if nothing else will clear it. If all the above doesn't work, a dermatologist rather than your pediatrician might be a good idea. edited by kiwispiers on 23/06/2011

The best brand I found is Dermalex Repair. For my baby ( 5 months old as well) it worked miracle. It"s non-cortizone cream. We use it with Cetaphil cream on the top.

Sorry to hear that, I know it is very uncomfortable... I used Fusidin. It is not specifically for baby, but for my son nothing else worked. I used it and there was no repeating of the eczema - so happy for that after using 4-5 others + some cream from our GP :( Bioderma is very good, but if it's not working for you try the Fusidin :)

I have eczema as well as my baby. I am trying to avoid cortisone as it will disapear, but when the eczema is coming back, it is spreading and worst. The best brand I found is Bioderma. For me I am using Bioderma PP ( daily) or PO cream ( crisis). They have also a cream for babies ( ABC derm, ATO plus) which is very nice, and with less chemicals. Otherwise, avoid hot bath, sweat. No daily bath( 2- 3 times per week is enough) with very mild soap. Coton clothing is best. And , of course, avoid any particular allergen Hth edited by spamm on 23/06/2011
