Hi everyone,

It has been a while since I came here. Anyways, I have asked the questions about Welcare Hospital before and I got good reviews in general. However, I want to know who has had experience with anesthesiologists there. There is a high probability of me doing a c-section and I have heard that anasthesia is very painful there. Since I had two of my other kids in the US, there are two shots they give you. One is before the actual epidural to numb the area, so you don't feel a huge needle in your back. Here I heard they go straight to the epidural. I wonder what were your experiences and if what I think is true.

Thanks :-)

I had one at Welcare last March and unfortunately my Anesthetist wasnt very good, im afraid. I was obviously in labour and bent over into position ready to have it in my spine and she tried at least 4 times to put it in. She had to call a technicial down to assist. Afterwards one of the midwifes commented that she was surprised at how much the doctor had struggled, so I wasnt very happy. I had had an epidural before in the UK and my anesthetic got it in first time. So my experience here wasnt very good. However, I had a brilliant doctor who was there through out my delivery but unfortunately getting the epidural in isnt his dept.Apart from that Welcare is a very good hosp in all other areas. Hope that helps. I could have written this post. Same time last year, March. it was a lady, i forget her name but she was in and out with the needle about 4 times before getting to the correct spot. i now suffer back pain - maybe just a coincidence? but i didnt have backpain before pregnancy.

Hi Pixie2011, I had my delivery at Welcare in september 2011 with the help of an epidural. My anesthetist was fantastic, his name is Dr Maneesh. He was very efficient, and calm. He kept talking to me throughout the procedure telling me what and why he was doing which made me relax a lot. I did not even feel the needle prick. As my labour was being induced, my epidural was administered before my strong contractions started, maybe that made a difference too. Needless to say, these things vary a lot on a case to case basis. Perfectly competent doctors could have a bad day, so there are no gaurantees. Before my delivery, I was worried about the epidural too as someone from the forum shared their story of a botched up epidural. If I remember correctly, her doctor was a short, blond female, I think her name was Dr Silvie. If you are having a planned C section, then it might be worth checking out who would be the aesthetist on call that day. HTH. Good luck! Thank you so much! I will definitely look who is the anestesiologist that day. I am definitely having a c-section, because I already have had 2 and the baby is in feet first position as of now. I will address my concerns with Dr. Janaki about that.

hi... i just underwent a csection at welcare... on the 9th of feb... and i cannot recommend Dr. Janaki and her team highly enough! They did a fantastic job :) i didnt have an epidural... but was given a spinal instead (i'm assuming ur aware of the differences)... the anesthesiologist got it in the first prick and the OT staff were guiding me throughout the entire procedure explaining what they were doing every step of the way... i felt the first prick of the numbing injection... but the actual injection that administers the spinal i couldn't feel at all... what also helped was that they put a numbing cream on the area an hour before i went in for the surgery (emla)... ask for the same if it helps... all the best with your delivery :) Awesome! I am scheduled with Dr. Janaki as well. I hope it all goes well. Yeah, I would need a spinal and this is what I meant. I will definitely ask for the numbing cream.

Sorry i can't tell you the name of my anaesthesiologist as i had an emergency CS and looking at name badges in the operation theatre was not a priority :) but hubby can come in once they have given you the epidural and you are settled. Oh sorry... Silly of me. Yeah, if you had an emergency cs you can't tell who it was. It is a good thing that they let husband in. I would want someone to be with me and I would definitely prefer my husband. Definitely helps to relax. I am hoping my epidural will run smoothly without any problems.

Hi everyone, Thank you so much for you replies. I have had 2 c-sections in the US and both times they were very good. I am getting quite concerned that I may have similar experience where they will fail to insert the needle properly. I am scheduled with Dr. Janaki and I think I will address the issue with her and tell her that there are people with bad experiences when it comes to epidural. Can you guys recommend me a particular anesthesiologist? Do they allow husband to be in with you in the room?

I also had emergency CS at Welcare in April - epidural was straight forward and easy. From what I read in different threads, it seems to vary so rather hard to tell. It might be a good idea to ask for a meeting with the anaesthesiologist and ask him what he will be doing exactly so you know what to expect. With me they it was as you describe it: small needle to numb area and then second one which is the big mamma needle for the actual epidural. They ask you to deep breathe for a few seconds and then take a big breath and hold it so that you are still enough for the needle to go in. All is can say other than that is: RELAX, it does help. Best of luck xxx

Hi Pixie2011, I had my first baby at Welcare with the help of an epidural. It worked the first time the needle was inserted. It was male doctor last time. And I had already developed strong contractions by then. It generally works in the first stages of labor. Also they make you sit up straight in the midst of the labour pain. But all worth it!

Hi Pixie2011, I'm afraid I also had a failed epidural at Welcare last year. I underwent an emergency c-section and ended up under general anesthesia. The Anesthetist made four attempts and none of them were successful, on the other hand, the general care and the hospital was excellent. Good luck Hi Mac123 [url=http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php'>[img'>http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-greet024.gif[/img'>[/url'> :) Hello There!;)

Hi ladies, I had asked the exact same question back in August on the Pregnancy forum, Pixie2011 and there seemed to be a lot of positve replies. I will be delivering at welcare inshallah and have just completed 34 weeks. (first child was via c-section!) Mac123, can you give us some more details pls? so sorry abt your experience! I had a failed epidural at al wasl with my first baby thus the nervousness now! After the 4 attempts, did the epidural actually work and how did your delivery go? It just didn't work for me. I am told it works for some and not for others. Saying that my friend had her baby there this past weekend and it worked very well. Needle went in first time, no issues. Good luck! :)
