Well, I am one of those old people who followed the Lamaze method when I was pregnant for my 2nd :)...I went to weekly classes though, not read the book and it was darn good. I had both labours without drugs except for a pain pill to dull the pain. Yes, it was painful but my husband helped me through it. I am not sure if I would have an epidural and been comfortable. The thought of not having control over my body was a bit daunting, at least without the major drugs I could help myself through it and I knew it would not be forever, just felt like it at the time lol....anyway, some have major drugs, some not, some go to classes, some dont, some have a doula, some dont, all different and if reading a book on the Lamaze method will help the OP in her journey toward a delivery she might be able to manage as much as she is capable of, so be it :)...I sure do recommend childbirth classes though where your husband goes with you so he can support you :)

Painless birth, how funny!!!!!!!!!!! no pain no gain. I think the pain has some part in it, I believe it makes us bond with our babies!!!!!!!!!!!

Umm i think the point is that the thought that a book (written by a bloke) could determine a pain free birth once read is a pretty far flung claim, or rather that was my point. If any book was that good it would be being handed out at every pre natal clinic in the world and there would be no need for pain relief ever at all to those who needed it. Every woman and birth is different. We all know those who shed um out like peas and were in and out within an hour, as well as those who needed ECS or pain relief. I just wish people would think a little harder about issues like this, if something really was that good wouldn't everyone in the world be using it??? The OP would maybe benefit more from seeking the advice and support of a human (doula/midwife), yes an old fashioned notion rather than a book. Just an idea. Although i'm sure the book is a great read and has been of benefit to many.;)

A Doula would be a great option. For me.. I needed someone to tel me to breathe.. cuz i always hold my breath when in pain and I KNOW that if I breathe it will make it a lot easier.. so I needed someone to guide me. You are pushing an entire baby out so it gotta hurt some!!!.. Also "laughing gas " is great.. if you are otherwise coping well that would be a great option!. Its effects doesnt last for too long and it doesnt stay in your body for too long like other drugs.. Good luck!

Try hypnobabies. It worked perfectly for me. I had a drug-free childbirth (wont dare to go for a root canal though). No IV drips, no episiotomy, no needles, injections, none of the poking and prodding hospital stuff. Major major adrenaline rush after childbirth, felt like I could run a marathon there and then. I had so much fun I wont mind doing it again (minus the child rearing part). Good luck! How I long for the days when a person would have a baby and say they felt so well they could have cleaned a house from top to bottom. Now its all I could have run a marathon. Jeez :D edited by DesertRose1958 on 14/01/2011

I don't think that is what people are thinking - they are probably thinking "lucky you" . I think some people may be wondering about my sanity... but that's nothing new! ;) I'll always remember my director at work saying "ooo, you'll be screaming for an epidural by the end of it!" while I was still pregnant with my 1st. She didn't have any children of her own, so was, in my silent opinion, just spouting 2nd hand nonsense... so I just nodded, smiled and replied "well, we'll see". That's all anyone can do... wait and see... but in the meantime, there's no harm in surrounding yourself with positive vibes!

Like someone said if you think you can have a root canal without drugs then go ahead and give birth without drugs!!! should I take paracetamol if I don't have a headache? where is anyone saying that you take it "just in case"? well, the general gist is that you guys (OK, everyone apart from me) are saying is that childbirth is exceptionally painful (like root canal surgery) and so anyone who doesn't dose up on as many drugs as possible is a deluded fool. [ I don't think that is what people are thinking - they are probably thinking "lucky you" .

The magic is called drugs! The number of new mums i have known who said they would never take drugs during their childbirth, ha that changed when they were in the delivery room at rapid speed!! Well, as you know those mothers are just so much better mothers than those who had drugs! To me it owuld be the equivalent of people boasting about going to the dentist and getting teeth pulled without anything - why?:\: er... because some people just don't need any drugs? I really just don't understand why "you lot" can't get that too... we're all different. There are no medals. It's not a contest... it's about doing it the way you need to at the time. I get seriously miffed when it's the opposite competition - the Competition of Woe and how everyone assumes that if someone doesn't experience the same "agony" that they did, then they're abnormal. Just as with anything in life - if you embark on a task already thinking that you'll bail out, fail or just not even attempt it because "other people said bla bla bla", then that's how it'll happen. Simples. I don't lead my life like that. I attempt things to the best of my ability and [i'>then[/i'> form an opinion on the matter. My opinion on childbirth is that it has an awful lot to do with the frame of mind the mother is in at the time, if she can trust her body to lead her and be at peace with all the alternatives that may have to happen. There's no winning or failure because on the day, we the only entrant in the race. There's no competition. Ha ha yes, some people love to tell all about their 48 hour + labours! :D

I wasn't in enough pain to even need gas'n'air, let alone an epidural, pethidine, etc... second time around. I just wasn't. Didn't need them so didn't take any. edited by Hello.Kitty on 14/01/2011

A Doula or qualified Midwife will be of far more use to the OP than any book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best wishes Baklawas! For more support during your pregnancy and birth, have you considered having a doula by your side? Someone you build a relationship with during your pregnacy and who can be there for you through labour? Doulas are 'just' women who are passionate about childbirth and supporting women through it all. While I say "just", I think they are heroes to those they support. If you do a search you'll find a couple of fabulous doula groups operating in Dubai. Of course there are great ante-natal classes that you can do too and still benefit from the classes and the relationships you can build with other classmates, even for a second delivery. I'm told Birthing From Within classes are AMAZING...I know the book is!! Now, there's a book worth getting your hands on! http://www.birthingfromwithin.com/

Seriously a man writes abook about pain free child birth and women believe him? Scince when was child birth meant to be pain free for all women? Do women out there truely believe they can read a book and by some form of magic not feel any pain when delivering?? I am stunned. People deal with fear of the unknown in different ways, the op has already stated she has no family support here as is the case with many of us, and giving birth is a major event in a womans life, why not read up on anything she feels may help ? Even if in your opinion it's Bs, that's her choice I don't think it's very supportive to belittle her methods of putting her mind at rest, whatever they may be, she was actually only asking about shop n ship for goodness sake! Where's the support here ! You know some women like to be in a birthing pool with panpipes on in the backgground , I can't think of anything worse, same for epidural I wouldn't touch one, but each to their own at the end of the day !

Have you tried Book Depository? They certainly ship to the UAE. As for the method, well, I "did" hypnobirthing, and whilst I still find the "no pain" claims to be optimistic to say the least, I did sail through both of mine with, well, 2nd time around, just a couple of paracetamols. I do, however, really think that the fear-tension-pain cycle and women's love for reinforcing the "excruciating pain" thoughts doesn't help in the slightest. My sprained ankle was more painful than childbirth. Honestly. I also think that it's always worth remembering that in a normal labour, the pain is muscular pain, not trauma pain. It's the most strenuous physical activity we've ever done. Think about someone running a marathon. Are they in pain whilst doing it? Probably... but in a (very) strange way, they're also enjoying the experience. There are also some that claim that childbirth can be orgasmic... even I chuckel at the thought of that, 'cos whoever does, must be into some kinky stuff! Anyhow, I was thinking about it the other day (not kinky stuff) and I suddenly kind of understood how it could happen. I've never felt so in tune with my body as when I was in labour and giving birth... it was actually quite an epiphany... not orgasmic, but still a lovely experience and really quite pleasurable. ... and no, I'm not actually a tree-hugging hippy type. OP, email me on hello.kittydxb At gmail d0t com if you'd like a chat about it away from the nay-sayers. ;) edited by Hello.Kitty on 13/01/2011 edited by Hello.Kitty on 14/01/2011

Hi Babyrat, I know no delivery is whitout pain I had my first one in July 2009 and it lasted 20 hours... But I just wanted to reassure myself by reading this book I'ts not a bad idea I think That's all I can have Lots of other women for their deliveries have the great chance to have their mothers, or mother in law, near them at the time of the delivery Me no Sorry I didn't mean to offend you. I feel for you. I went 12 hours through it before they decided to give me a C-Section. i have a friend who recent did Hypnobirthing and she said it wasn't bad. I have an Armax Ship and Shop account if you want to use it.
