Hi Ladies,

I am struggling to get my 5month old daughter into a proper routine. I am feeding her every 4hrs during the day and she sleeps all night.

No matter what time I get up at in the morning i cannot seem to get her to bed until at least 10-11pm....

This morning I was up at 8am, I fed her at this time, then again at 12.30pm, a small spoon feed at 1.15pm and again at 5.30pm and she is currently sleeping waiting to feed her.

There is no point in me tryign to feed her any earlier than say the 12.30pm as she will simply not take it, I have tried and she refused point blankely...

Are there any solutions or will I just have to continue with this until she is on solids and able to feed closer together...

She had been taking 4*8ozs bottles... this has went down and up a few times... currently I am giving her 8ozs but she does not always finsih them and often it can be a struggle to get her to take any bottle even if it 4-5hrs sicne her last feed..

Please can yo give me some tips or advice... my eldest daughter was completely different and I have her in bed each nite by 8pm and she willl sleep 12hrs...

Thanks ladies

Hi there, I do the following with my baby: 8-8:30- wake up - nappy change& feed 150 ml+ vit. D 9:30- 10:30, - nap up& little play 11:00 little rice with milk (home made) abt. 1 spoon 12:30 feed - 120- 150 ml 13:00- nap 14:30, 15:00 up little playing on the mat 16:00- feed 150 ml, 16:30 nap for abt. 30 min then spending little time out on the balcony more playing 19:30 bath 20:00 feed 150 ml 21:00 bedtime She does wake up once in the night so I feed her 120 ml and change the nappy; but sometimes she'd eat during the day 120 ml per feed, sometimes she wants more, like 180 ml. Try to reduce the last nap time... She's the same sort of routine as my little boy. But I make sure he doesn't take that nap around 4 and got him into napping a around 3 pm so he wakes up has his feed around 4 ...and stays awake ...I bath him before 6:30 pm I have 3 kids so the time bath time is up its7:30 his exhausted and has his milk early and in bed by 8 pm. Keep trying with the food, u can tell if she enjoys it. My son never drank less milk because he was eating that's how I know he was ready. He drinks a whole bottle and then has a veg like pumpkin, sweet potatoe and then pears apples peaches combo all .... But heyho they are all different. Have u tried settling her with out giving her the milk in the middle of the night? Good luck x

I swear by the books by Baby Whisperer, Tracey Hogg. These books absolutely saved our sanity when our now 14 month old was 5 weeks old. We got her into a great routine, stopped all our naughty parenting habits & she has been sleeping 7pm-7am since she was 5 months old & phasing out the dream feed at 10 months old. We still have the odd wobble, especially after holidays etc... But on the whole, life is pretty smooth! Also, re: Solids, we went with 'Baby Led Weaning' at 6 months of age, again there are some great books and didn't have to bother with silly purees etc, and we now have a toddler with a wonderfully varied palate, great table manners, and she uses cutlery well too! Good luck!

imolinar, your baby is very young to introduce solids anyway, but if you do choose to introduce them this early, keep in mind that at this age they will tend to take less milk in response. white rice has almost no nutrional value (unless you buy the special fortified baby-rice) so its probably not the best food to be fulling your baby's tiny tummy with. If you want to give something, better to make it nutrient rich otherwise it would be healthier to stick with just milk.

Hi Imolinar, I prepare the rice with formula (my baby is 5 months old and formula fed only); I boil the rice (white rice) abt 1.5 spoons in bottled water until it is very soft then I transfer it in the food processor and mix it with formula until it becomes like a puree. I have chosen to boil it first in water because I read that it you prepare it directly with formula you still need to add water to get it properly cooked and this might dilute the nutrients from the formula. She eats about 2 spoons from this puree; I prepare only the quantity for 1 day (she eats abt 2 times from it) and I keep it in the sealed small container in the refrigerator. This is my personal choice, that works very well with her. I try to feed her this rice with milk about an hour after her feed in order for her to have the formula as main meal and to make sure that she gets all the nutrients from it. The 4 hours routine in between the feeds is not "a must", even for us, more like a guide; if she is hungry 3 hours after a feed of course I will feed her. Every baby is different so you will have to come up with a routine that works best for your baby. I tried to introduce banana, apple and carrot to her but she seems not to like them at the moment (except for the carrot that seemed to be somehow ok) but will try again in a couple of weeks. ;)

Emanuela, I like your routine, but I cannot leave my baby without milk for more than 3 hours, he gets hungry. How do prepare the little rice with milk (home made) abt. 1 spoon?. I am thinking of starting slowly introducing some solids.

Do u do a good routine at bedtime ? Bath time, relax and dim the lights down .....maybe try to reduce the time just by half an hour and keep reducing. I feed my son 8 am 12 then 4 pm and bedtime 8 pm..... His also weaned and has 3 meals aday,I make sure he has no nap between 4 pm and 8 so he is so tired he falls asleep drinking his bottle. Try giving that 5:30 feed earlier around 4 may help as well.

My 4 1/2 old baby still takes 5 oz milk (breastmilk/formula) 6 times per day (nothing else), and he is very healthy, no chubby, no skinny. I put him to sleep at 8 pm max 9 pm. That is the natural sleep cycle for babies, if you put them to sleep later they will be overtired and wont sleep, also you need to make sure you baby naps 3-4 hours during the day. Letting her sleep at 5:30 is not a good idea, it is too late for a nap. Also, you may be overfeeding your baby, if she does not want dont force her to drink, she may not be ready for solids yet either.
