I am thinking I should start to teach DD how to read...she loves reading books. She is 3, she recognises a few letters but can sing the whole Alphabet song. I learned to read through Syllables...did anyone else here learn that way?
Most nurseries and schools now use phonics. This is totally new to me, so I did a lot of research on it. I am still not convinced that it is better than syllables. My daughter doesn't enjoy phonics much (maybe I can't teach it well as I wasn't taught by it). I remember learning to read was a pleasant and automatic thing for me. I don't remember it being such a pain and memorising so many sounds....
Anyone here tried teaching with syllables? How did it go? Do you have any resources?

yep was gonna say the same thing, she really needs to develop an enjoyment of reading.... reading by syllables will confuse her if the nursery are teaching phonics. phonics programmes these days really are very effective...and it focusses on the children actually understanding sounds, graphemes and words around them...a much higher success rate. may i ask why your are not convinced? it just may be that your DD is not ready to be exposed to learning to read yet, she still is very young. some chn r ready now, some later. when she is ready, she will flourish, dont worry. u dont want to kill the enjoyment of reading. but yes, the bbc websites r excellent. as is ictgames.com

she's 3... she doesn't need to actually read, just to enjoy books. Ask her to pick out letters she sees and say them phonically. DD and I do this with street signs and random things and she loves it. Reinforce what she's learning at school by doing it in a light-hearted way if she seems receptive. She doesn't need extra "lessons". Don't introduce a new method, because it'll risk confusing her, even if she picks it up, because she'll start coming out with things like "mummy told me not to do it like that" in class.... Phonics do work. The BBC has come up with a programme called "alphablocks" which is brilliant and very fun. I don't remember using phonics when I was little, but it's helped me to understand and use them.
