Absolutely Must wash everything, clothes, blankets, etc I just put on gentle wash nd fragrance free powder / liquid. Can b found in all major markets. Downy for babies i use mostly. Usually at 37 /38weeks hospital bag nd baby items are all washed nd kept ready. edited by Flower33 on 25/06/2012

Hope you don't have the same issue, but in case you do... My LO has extremely sensitive skin. Everything he wears or uses has to be washed in the one detergent his skin can tolerate, it's Purex Baby (white container with a pink cap).

I worked on the basis that if they were going to shrink better in advance, so anything that I thought I would end up tumble drying, might as well be tumble dried beforehand. You tend to wash/soak things in warm/hot water to get the stains out (especially if you have a vomitty baby) but best tp check the washing instructions on the clothes themselves (before you cut the tags off ;) ). Carrefour sell a non perfumed washing liquid in big bottle, labelled all in French (its the Carrefour own brand) which is what I use, as its the best value fragrance-free one around. We use it for the whole family. If clothes get really stained though I do soak in napisan/vanish before washing. Awesome thanks!

What is wrong with fabric softener and baby's cloths? only that it contains perfumes/chemicals that could irritate their skin, if you are already using it without issue then don't worry, I just like to keep as many chemicals as possible away from my baby, and especially if you had a newborn, getting breastfeeding established, best to avoid perfumes. But its not a huge deal to use fabric softener if you really want to.

You don't need to wash them separately from your own clothes, I think the point though is don't put them on the baby straight from the shop. Do people really do this? I would never wear something without it having been washed let alone put it on my baby.

a friend suggested that any baby items i buy i should wash before use. anyone else heard of this and do u advise it?? Everyone told me to do this too. Anyway I didn't, all the clothes get washed with non-bio with our clothes and (touch wood) DD hasn't had any problems with her skin. I do however unpick scratchy labels. DD is 15 months now.

you should wash all clothing before first use, regardless of who it is for, it often has toxic chemical residue in it. baby clothes are best washed in something fragrance free and without fabric softener. I like to tumble-dry to keep them soft. I also unpick all the labels as I don't think its nice for babies to have anything scratchy against their soft skin. I tended to just wash things as I bought them, throughout my pregnancy, you can always wash them again before your baby is born.

by airtight containers I meant keep the clothes somewhere away from dust :) drawers will do, but may be keep them in plastic bags or something. I would wash the clothes around 3 weeks before your due date - you never know, may be LO will decide to come earlier :) that's what happened with DS :)

Yes this is true. All items of clothing, bibs, etc, should be washed before your baby wears them (this is particularly for newborns). You should try and use detergent for babies and don't add any softener at all.

Lots of people wash and iron babies' new clothes to rid of bacteria and any chemicals that clothes material might contain as the newborn's skin is very sensitive. DD is 15 months and I still do that. You cash them on high temperature or baby cycle (in case your washing machine has that option) with non-bio detergent. Iron and keep it in air tight container till your baby is here :) edited by dramaqn on 24/06/2012 edited by dramaqn on 24/06/2012
