I am so totally heartbroken..:(
My son went for assessments at a popular school , they have rejected him because he couldn't make it to their grade. I was so hoping he would make it. I know he is not the brightest, but he is not that bad either..he just needs proper direction which his current school is not able to provide. I guess the schools have a reputation to protect but what about the not-so-bright children , why can't the schools take them in and give them the little push they would need( we were trying for grade 1 for him)

I am so depressed, I could hardly eat. :(( what do I do ..:( :( :( :(

ohh don't get me started on Vasta!! a very very popular and much sought after GEMS school who initially told me that they were full and had no seats had the balls to send me an email soon after telling me they could accommodate my request for DD into FS2 if I would consider paying a personal debenture of AED 120,000/- ( i have this in writing from them!!!) Hi If you can send me by mail this request of money, my DH will be happy to take it to authorities to take action on it. its life. get over it. You know someone made a comment like this to me when I recently posted about a situation that had really upset me. Her post offered me nothing other than the equivalent of a taunt. I think about it often - real school girl stuff. It's sad you can't empathise with the OP, and I think in the words of my dear Grandmother," if you can't say something nice ( or perhaps helpful) don't say anything at all". To the OP - I feel your pain.

It's no different when you go to a private school in the UK , they are selective and do placement tests. And places become available all the time here , one day the school is full the next it's not , thats just the way it goes.

Our youngest was rejected twice !! the first school (having taken our "deposit" of course) asked me what levels he was on in the uk and when i told them they said they weren't high enough... the second one he actually took an assessment (for year 2) and failed. The head grudgingly offered us a year 1 place but no way were we going to put him back a year for the rest of his school life...Oddly, a few weeks later, two weeks in to the new term they emailed and asked if we had found a place yet !! Thankfully we had and have been very happy with the school..Third time lucky in our case.. It's the worst feeling when it happens, i hope you get sorted soon..

My child got rejected for a school which was NOT even one of our preferred schools, and I still felt really awful about it. It bothered me for days !! And we only applied there because my husband's company had a debenture and encouraged us to because we were on waitlist everywhere else. We did finally get into our school of 1st choice, but it was a nailbiting wait for acceptance. Try and think of it in a positive light, if there is already that kind of pressure at Grade 1, can you just imagine the pressure on both you and him as he moves up through the school years, I would certainly hate it.

Thank you for all your sweet replies .. Agree everything happens for a reason..strong believer of that, but still can't help feel so very sad about this. I didn't try for any other school as I was pretty sure I wanted him to be at this school.. I guess I was very stupid to do that. It's not one of the GEMS school and that's one of the reason too that I decided for this school as they claim to be not for profit.. Really don't know which other school to try for.. Ask for a written report as to why your DS failed the assessment.

Have you considered putting him into FS2 again and it could do him all the good in the world. He would have time to consolodate what he learned this year and also have a chance to feel that he is the smart one and that will boost his confidence. I know alot of parents who are against this as they view it as failure but I teach early years and I think it is sometimes a smart option for children who are young and need a little time. Ihave a little girl in my class this year who repeated and she has just soared. She is confident now and ready to face the next year feeling like a success. The parents made the right decision and are delighted with her. The child was not told she was repeating as she had a different teacher. I vote for this depending on when his birthday is IMO, this is not a good idea unless it is really necessary.

It really is very young to make an assessment of your son's abilities. Is there another school that you could apply for? Can you ask for a report on why he didn't pass the asessment and thenwork with him in that area or get a tutor and try again next year. Maybe this experience has just put you off the school though. If it's any consolation, I think it's easier to transfer when they are older as there is no so much competition for places as in the early grades.

Yes, and if a child does not say a word during an assessment, they treat it like something is wrong with him/her. Well, don't they know that it's not abnormal for a young child not to say a word to someone he/she doesn't know?

I would treat it that she is far too good for that school. Their loss. I have had similar with older age groups and it is awful, because they do know they did not make the grades. I went down the route of saying classes were full and we were on waiting lists and need to look at alternatives etc, but then her mates from her school did get accepted, and as she is not stupid (despite what the school was implying!!) she knew it was the fact that she did not meet their assessment criteria. My DD is also what I would consider main stream but still failed with the maths. I am also very sceptical about the need to make more money through parents submitting for admissions and then not getting them. What about the child that is more than capable but just petrified of exams? Ohhhh it makes my blood boil.... and apart from a very very few select schools, I thing the majority are well below par on what you should be receiving from a 'private'very costly school.

Thanks guiness and bubble-trubble for ur replies Ds doesn't know of course, he has even forgotten he went for assessments(it was in march) He had liked the school tho, when we had gone then. He is such a happy child and a delight to be with..the school doesn't know they are missing out on a gem of a child .. But still I wish they had taken him in :( :(
