Malak is 6 months old now, so I want to start her on solids. I have tried a few times, but she screams, cries, and just spits it out! I have tried a variety of things like, carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, apples, bananas so far and she acts as if I am feeding her poison!

She is a cardiac baby, had open heart surgery at 4 days old and has had a serious bout of septic shock that kept her in hospital for 6 weeks. She then was in hospital again for a balloon angioplasty 2 months ago. So she is a bit behind in motor skills as it is because of all the hospital stays.

Because of her cardiac problems she is gaining weight slowly and cardiologist is encouraging more weight gain by feeding solids. But she will not have anything to do with them!!!! My other 2 kids (now 11 and 7) took to the spoon and solids so easy! So with Malak I am at a loss on what to do. Maybe she is just not ready?? I dont want to push her into something she isnt ready for, but she needs to gain weight and get bigger for her next upcoming surgery. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!!

Have you tried a Bumbo or Prince Lionheart seat? My DD started off in a Prince Lionheart seat, the high chair seemed so big.

Thanks for the advice ladies. Led weaning sounds like a good idea, but just putting her in a high chair makes her mad! I really think she just isn't ready. Poor thing has been through a lot, and she does not like her schedule to be changed! Adding solids is changeing her routine and she just isnt adapting to it yet. I am going to try the led weaning even if she just sits in her chair 5 minutes until she starts to get use to it. Sounds like a fab plan. Do it at a time when you are all around the table. She will see it is "fun" and in her own time I'm sure she will begin to enjoy being in her highchair and as soon as she's ready she'll be making huge amounts of mess while exploring her food.

I would agree, she's just not ready yet. I have decided to do baby led weaning with DS2. You basically put food in front of them at 6 months and let them feed themselves. It does say inthe book though, that at 6 months they are only at the exploring age and copying what they see from siblings and parents. So mot much actually passes their lips. It's only at around 8 months where they start taking food in. I bought my book of Amazon but I'm sure Magrudy's sell it, if you're interested. There are also some great websites, just google. I really wouldn't stress, as long as she's having her usual amount of milk maybe a little more then usual, she'll be just fine. Try not to stress.

Wow! What a little fighter you have there! It does sound like she's not ready for solids yet. My DD showed interest in solids at 4mths but when we gave it to her, she didn't know what to do with it so we held off for a while then tried again with more success. If you are really keen to get her started in order to gain weight, perhaps try a smoothie type drink that she can take from a bottle. Even it's a little fruit pureed in with her milk, that might get her used to the taste. Often it's the texture of the food that puts them off so perhaps start off with flavoring the milk and if she facts positively to it, make it a little thicker next time. Good luck!

Hi hun, my DS was not ready before he was 6.5-7 months. He hated all weaning food like veggies & fruit puree. I started to offer him tastes from what we'r eating fork mashed at 1st & he started to like solids. He was on 2-3 solids with 3 milk feeds at around 8 months. At this age, her milk has more calories than solids. He's 14 months now, & until now he doesnt eat much. Some babies are not big eaters.
