Just an update ladies from todays paper http://gulfnews.com/business/property/uae/maximum-fee-for-tenancy-renewal-is-dh160-1.877583
Hope it saves some of you from being over charged as we almost were!
you can get blank contracts from stationary shops. Go grab one and do it yourself, then you have saved lots of money and also comitted to the contract I would also have your cheques ready too.
Hope that helps.
We rent our property out through an agent and we pay them an amount to do the renewal as they collect / deposit cheques etc for us as we are not in Dubai. But we pay that as it is for our convenience, I would not expect the tenants to pay anything! If I were you I would flatly refuse to pay it and tell them to get it from the landlord.
You are not under any obligation to pay the landlord or agency anything to renew the contract or to register the contract with RERA. Simply say no. The landlord cannot kick you out of the apartment if you refuse to pay to renew the contract. They know this and they're trying to pull the wool over your eyes, and you must never believe them when they claim to have someone else lined up for the apartment! Real estate in Dubai is nothing but lies, lies and more lies.
the standard agency fee for a renewal is 2000 aed , which is better since ur contract will be covered by RERA in case of any issues.
But have never heard of landlords themselves charging anything.
Its better to get it done through an agency i feel
Theres no difference accept that ure paying 2k to an agency to give u abit of paper. It up to the LL to register it with Rera which u can make sure he does.

I dont think agency renewing contract leads to automatic coverage by RERA
For RERA to cover you, the landlord needs to to register the contract with RERA by a system called EJARI. The fee is 300 dhs , so 2000 dhs is a ripoff.
[b'>There is no way a tenant should pay 2000 dhs for a service which costs 300 dhs or less[/b'>
Thanks ladies for the swift replies. Our problem is that out Landlord speaks either Arabic or French and unfortunately my husband and I speak neither, so we must go through the agency for the contract and in fact all communication! This makes things quite difficult when dealing with things like this but of course we are in an arabic country and this has to be expected.
Do we just tell the agency that we are not paying? Problem is that our LL has someone else lined up for our apt (so they tell us) and we dont want to lose it as the price is good and we are happy?
Is there not an arabic speaking member of staff in your husband's place of employment who may be willing to help with the language barrier? :)
if you think it's worth it to keep the contract, then pay it. If you think it's too steep, then negotiate.
Our agents wanted commission to renew, so we negotiated the rent down to what we wanted to pay and told them to take their commission out of that.
The weight of responsibility still falls with the LL - it is his issue to resolve, not yours, unless he is only willing to accept French or Arabic speaking tenants in the future.

You shouldn't have to pay anything for a renewal - they are trying it on. Renewal can be done without an agent. If the LL chooses to use one, then he/she can pay. Make it very clear that you will not pick up the bill for this and stand your ground. It could be that the LL is already paying them and they are trying their luck with you too - most of them are snakes *in my opinion*.
Any honest agents on here to advise?

Is there a standard charge or does it vary from agency to agency? The agency our LL is using wants to charge us 2500 to to provide us with a renewed contract, is this the norm? I thought it sounded a little high? TIA
P.S. Did a quick search and couldn't find any relevant threads so aoplogies if this has recently been done.
