Thanks ladies - but I am not looking to straighten my hair... I just want it to stop being frizzy if that's possible in this weather! Does the Moroccan oil help with keeping the curls and taking out the frizz? Will check Spinney's meadows - thanks for that! :)

I use the sunsilk shampoo and conditioner and find it makes a huge difference! The only way to permanently straighten your hair is to have it rebonded, then it lasts till it grows out. I used to find that brilliant and only had to have it done around twice a year. I've been giving my hair a break though as I was doing it for years, so I'm embracing the waves at the moment.

I have thick wavy frizzy long hair that I blow dry straight myself. I have tried the keratin treatment a few times and find it makes a huge difference, but it doesn't last that long on me and it is expensive. So, trying more affordable methods, I have been using the Sunsilk straightening shampoo and conditioner (in the purple bottles) that was "developed" with Yuko, the Japanese hairdresser behind the famous hair straightening system. The Sunsilk stuff is reasonably priced and Yuko should know something about straightening hair so I thought it worth a go. To be honest, I have found my hair so much easier to dry straight and it is staying straight longer. Usually the first little bead of sweat that breaks out on my forehead and, pouf, the frizz is back, but this has definitely made a difference. I have also bought the Lee Stafford Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioner, which I intend to try next. That is more expensive though. Both the Sunsilk and Lee Stafford are in Le Marche in the Ranches.

You can buy Moroccan Oil hair products in Spinneys in the Meadows - the range is Lee Stafford. There's the oil, then lots of stuff with it in like shampoo, conditioner and hair treatment. A bit pricey but at least you'll know it's legit as it's an established brand. I bought some from Global Village and it was the cooking stuff packaged in a different bottle. Smelled awful and did nothing good for my hair. Beware of people selling rip off stuff - just because it's from Morocco does not mean it's genuine!

I know this is an old thread ladies, but was looking for some ideas for my hair - which used to be curly but is now pretty much always frizzy!!! I've heard good things about Moroccan Oil - any idea where I can find it now? And Frannie - is your hair still 'behaving' with the new method? Am very tempted to try it out - is that all there is to it? Cut out the shampoos with SLS (which are terrible for you anyway) and silicon conditioners (not sure about that as I have to use a regular conditioner and then a leave in just to get some 'control' over my hair :\: )... would love to hear an update from you!

Very interesting.... I do just get it straightened back home. Recently heard about Moroccon Oil for curly hair though and it's meant to condition it and sort of take the frizz out. Might get a cut, give it a go with that and if it still drives me nuts, will go and get it straigthened. I just want something that is low maintenance as I am forever chasing after my 2 kids!! lol edited by marmarina on 22/09/2011

Not sure how curly your hair is, but I tried the keratin straightening in January because I thought straight hair might be easier than curls, and yeah I was curious about it. My hair was gorgeous and perfect for about three days -- like movie star perfect. But after about a month, the hair started curling up again and I was stuck between half straight and half curls! To me it wasn't worth it and if you have to spend a lot of time using a flat iron then it defeats the purpose of getting straight hair in the first place. In the end I got a trim and my hair returned to normal curls. The keratin process takes HOURS in the salon (more than 3) and whooo does the chemical stink... if you have straight hair, it will work much better. My hair was really soft and silky at first. But the keratin washes out. If you are a Curly Q like me, personally, I'd invest in a good hair cut instead. You can never TRULY tame your curls. If you start with the keratin, you'll have to keep going back over, and over, and over again to keep it really looking straight. And it aint cheap! I'm with Maracas on this one. I tried the Keratin treatment a couple of months ago and 2500dhs later it made bob all difference to my hair. THEN (excited deep breath) I found out about the Curly Girl Method. Read more here: http://www.wikihow.com/Follow-the-Curly-Girl-Method-for-Curly-Hair. Basically you need to a) stop using shampoo with Sodium Laurel Sulphate in it as it strips the hair of natural oils and b) stop using conditioning treatments with silicones in them as all silicone does is coat the hair in plastic. I've given up shampoo completely and just use the Body Shop Rainforest range conditioner to cleanse my hair AND condition my hair. My hair is TRANSFORMED. Literally. I'd say 70% less frizz and I have worn it down a lot this summer, something I'd never have had the confidence to do before. You can find The Curly Girl Handbook on Amazon, and there is also a facebook page. Highly recommended!

I am still in the Uk and planning to come out there in january.. as i was visiting last july i was really shocked with the high levels of humidity, have been plagued with curly hair all my life and have been stressed about how to go around in the UAE, here i straighten it at the hairdressers, i have 3 small kids and a disabled mum to look after and also a full-time job where i live now but unfortunately will have no job when i get there but then more time perhaps.. first time i hear about the japanese thing.. does sound extravagantly expensive but if it really works i will consider it.. let my husband pay for it anyway since he is dragging me there;-) But is it true that it ruins the hair as after years and years of straightening it doesn't look that good, has thinned and decreased in volume.. any advice appreciated thanks.. PS: oh yes, and i keep reading about all these stories regarding how the water quality there causes hair to fall.. last thing i need!!!

If your hair is that curly then pretty much the only way you're going to get it straight and to stay straight is by rebonding it or doing the Yuko straightening. To be honest after I have mine done, it went straight, stayed straight, was in great condition. COuld just wash it and it would fall straight, totally hassle free. Just re-do the roots every 6 months.

Hey Maracas, It's really curly. I don't think I would do Keratin, heard so many conflicting things about that. Was interetsed in the Japanese method - Yuko I think? I think I might just get it cut at this stage and just buy some good products. Just need to find out who stocks Redken here. Now to toss up between the Chi Spa in Motor City or Sisters in the Dubai Mall.... Decisions Decisions!! :)

Different hair react differently to different treatments. As I said I have been going to reflections and have always been happy with the results (not so much with the price) Its 2500dhs for the first treatment, or if you have left it more than the recommended time) and 1800dhs everytime you have the roots done. Before reflections i tried a salon in the Jumeirah beach club and I was not so impressed with the results so I never went back, but they were one of the first to do it here. I have seen many people comment about how happy they are with the results of Keratin, but for me it just didnt give the desired results. I can highly recommend Yuko from my point of view. (before making the booking for Yuko, they will ask you to come in so they can see your hair and test the product on a small strand) And yes, Reflections is an all round salon, not just for hair.

I've tried different things to straighten my hair...Japanese ( which was so nice ), Rebonding ( bad bad bad), Brazilian and Keratin. I am older and yes hair tends to thin out but I know I've damaged my hair. I have a great stylist at home that told me that straightening your hair is no more damaging that colouring. I just think years of it has taken it's toll. I understand the wavy, curly, humid mess! But with new product on the market like Ojon, Morracan oils for curly hair I just used those and hair spray works with the humidty. My kids are now grown so I can spend a little more time on the hair. When they were younger I just did not have time and understand those that want simplicity. Keep in mind curls and waves are back in style and if you don't know how to apply product (like me) just youtube it. My daughter learned how to flat iron curl her hair and give herself barbie doll tresses.

Please do not go to Reflections unless you want to lose your lovely locks. I had the Yuko treatment there and my hair broke and fell out! I was left with one inch of hair! I hate to bad mouth companies, but I cannot explain the pain and distress I went through as a result of this. I have had Yuko treatments at other salons over a number of years and never had any problems. The last time I straightened my hair, I had the Keratin treatment at Jens Hair Salon and was very happy with the result. Having read various reviews on the Keratin treatment, it seems that the results vary greatly depending on what salon you use. The Keratin is not as effective as Yuko but is far less damaging to your hair. Please make sure whoever you use, that they do come highly recommended by someone you know has personally used them.

Do HMCS still do it? How long does it last for? And how much does it usually cost you? Where in Mirdiff are they? Sorry about the 101 questions, just really keen to get myself sorted. :) As far as I know they do. They're in that little place with the market spinneys. I think initially it was 1,200 Dhs for shoulder length hair, then 600 Dhs everytime I got my roots done.

Yes, I did hear that Yuko was better than Keratin. Do they charge less if your hair is short or is it a standard price? Also, silly question but are they just hair focused or are they an all round salon? Never been there before you see. :) edited by marmarina on 15/09/2011

I have had my hair straightened at Reflections for the past 6 years and always been happy with the results. I recently deceided to have Keratin treatment as its cheaper and quicker, but I am very disappointed with the results :( I would definitly recommend reflections or Yuko.

I was going to a little salon in Mirdiff called HMCS. They were pretty good at it. I stupidly went somewhere else recently to have my roots done - complete disaster. Hair straightening is a specific skill and and art and don't let anyone tell you differently, that's why only certain people do it or do it well.

I was having my hair straightened using Shisiedo products and found it very good. Takes forever to do, but my hair was always lovely soft and shiny afterwards. My hair is wavy/curly and drives me insane with frizziness. I don't know whether my hair is thinner of not to be honest, when I was younger it was sooo thick but not anymore. Straightening using irons is fine, but the minute my hair hits humidity it just goes mental.

Hey dogcatcher, it's really interesting that you say that as I know my hair has thinned a bit but with two little kids, I would rather not have to do a lot to it as I don't have time. :( I thought Japanese was meant to be nourishing for the hair, is that not right? I usually get it done by a Korean lady back home but I am not sure if it's all the same procedure or not. As it is, I am super tempted to chop my hair as it has been a nightmare since I arrived here thanks to the water and stress and breastfeeding.... Need I go on? :) In your opinion do you think it's just better to keep the curls and nourish it? My GHDs decided to die as soon as I arrived in Dubai! :S Not even sure if I can purchase GHDs here so can't straighten it whenever I want anymore. :( Ranting a bit... :)

I've been straightening my hair for years and yes Japanese is the best. Keep in mind your hair will never be the same. 10 years of straightening and my hair is so thin. Before it was thick with curls/waves. I now baby my hair and will grow out the straight and flat iron when I need it straight. Just letting you know my regret. Keep in mind for 9 years I didn't regret one minute of it.

Hi Ladies, Just wondering if anyone had that done here and results/recommendations? Heard that Reflections on Al Wasl do it but I could be mistaken. Are they any good? Also wondering if the Chi Nail Spa in motor city does it... never been there but read somewhere on this site that it has good recommendations in general. New to hairdressers/beauty salons here so not sure where to go/what to expect. Was going to go to Tips & Toes in AR for general maintenance but happy to trek somewhere further for better results. Mainly concerned about the straighthening as I have no idea where to go for that here and how much it would cost, etc.. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. :)
