We are planning a trip to Oman and have a few queries that I haven't been able to google the answer to.

1. What are visa costs? We are South African/Australian
2. Are there food restrictions? Can we carry a campervan full of meat/food?
3. Can you take Alcohol? If not can you buy it once in Oman, is there an MMI?

Thanks for all the input

Kirschtin:- I understand you go camping in Oman, ... We are a family of 3 children (in Dubai) and want to go on our 1st Beach camping trip. So prefer it to be relatively close. Regarding your camping, was it on the Beach; do you just pick a spot and camp? or are there camping sites there? Any nearby proper toilet or shower facilities? What about fresh water and ice-cubes; where do you buy those/ nearby supermarkets or fuel stations? Have you been to/ or heard of other camping sites/beaches/ like in Fujairah, Ras El Kheimah or Khurfakan? Thanks

We just went north to Khasab -- amazing drive with unbelievable scenery. Crossed the border at Tibat and paid the exit fee (AED 35) and then the Oman tourist entry fee (AED 200). We didn't risk taking booze across the border as from what I understand you would need a liqour license to drink in Oman. Figured it wasn't worth the hassle. Taking food, no problem. Coming back in there are no more fees to be paid... only when leaving Dubai/entering Oman. You can read about the trip [url=http://thetravellingtrini.com/2011/09/28/goats/'> HERE [/url'>, if you like... not sure which part of Oman you are going to...

Cost of UAE exit visa depends on which emirate you're leaving from. Entry into Oman is free for Kiwis (which winds my Aussie DH up every time LOL)

went to Oman just this weekend for camping. Leaving Dubai at the al Ain, i found it funny to pay AED 35 to pay for the exit stamp.... that hasnt happened before. I did the visa run a couple of times (Hatta) but never had to pay for the exit stamp... We had South Africans with us who only had a tourist visa. they experienced quite a bit of trouble when re entering the UAE. (They had had to cancel their tourist visa first...) About food/alcohol: We were advised to hide the bottles as well. we kept them first in the ice box but that would be where they would first look... so before entering the border area we wrapped them in sleeping bags. another person was clever enough to put his alcohol in water/juice/ soft drink bottles (matching colors :))... enjoy :)

To all the ladies doing the visa run or going to Oman for a visit, about 5 mins drive from the last passport checkpoint (on the way back) there are some pot and carpet sellers. We picked up a huge (Persian lookalike) carpet 320X230 for 200AED. Worth a visit for some real bargains. The pots are lovely as well to put in the garden for those with large villas, he gave us 13 large ceramic pots for a bargain 80AED

In the last year we have crossed the border around 7 times to camp in Oman. None of the times they have registered our car - they make you open the boot, they look inside for 2 seconds and then you can go. So place any items you don't want to be discovered inside a bag or in a cold box, but place these bags/cold box art the bottom of your boot with some other stuff on top and you will be more than fine. We always find Omani army/police in the border very nice and friendly. Enjoy!!!

If you're entitled to visa on arrival then the cost is OMR 20 (around AED 200) I don't know about food issues but you're not supposed to take alcohol (depends if you're brave enough to "take" some). There are outlets such as A&E but I'm not sure if they'll serve you without a licence. ETA http://www.rop.gov.om/english/dg_customs_conditions.asp edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 30/09/2011
