so i failed my driving rta test. i know i made mistakes but the guy spoke only in arabic so i obviously didn’t know what he was busy blabbering. and after i failed i tried asking him and by saying that i don not understand arabic...can you please get me somebody who speaks in english and he went mental. he collected like 5-7 ppl around me saying that i am accusing him. all i was asking was to explain what i did wrong. so frustrating. thankfully another arab really shut this old man up! I am taking classes now and will hopefully do better next time. Thankfully everybody around me says its okay to fail a few times before you make it.

wish me luck next time

The official language of this country is Arabic, even though they kindly speak English to everyone, at times when they don't it doesn't come down to them being a bad person, it comes down to you deciding to live a country where you don't understand the official language and you just have to accept the consequences of that decision at times. Yep - i have to communicate with RTA for work - i send emails in English, get the replies in Arabic...... (have to then get them translated) :)

sorry to tell you this, but it really all depends on which side of the bed your examiner woke up on that morning! the first time i took the test was with a really cranky lady, she was extremely picky and made me really nervous..she failed everyone who took the test that day! Next week, my examiner was a real cheerful guy, he passed me and the other girl in the car although she crossed over to the wrong side of the road and was going to get us all killed by heading straight towards a truck coming from the opposite side! it all doesn't make any sense. Maybe it would help if you knew the words for Right "Yameen", Left "Yasaar" and Straight "Seeda" ? Sorry there isn't much anyone can do to help , it all depends on your luck with your examiner.

Oh so sorry for you, especially about the horid instructor. Cant you take the VIP programme and get a lady instructor and change if you dont like the instructor? That might help. Better luck next time, and dont let the miserable old goat get to you. i was on a vip programme. which is the worst!

You haven't mentioned which place you're taking lessons at, but almost all the driving schools here have female only sections. The instructors as well as the RTA examiners are female. I was also told that I could request an instructor who spoke my language ( the driving school I went to actually had instructors who would teach you in 5 languages!) as well ask for an examiner who spoke English ( not that my examiner spoke much - just left, right, u-turn). So call and ask the school. Try and get a timing as early in the morning as possible, that way, less traffic and the examiners are not as stressed out as they are by midday.I took the test 2 times before I passed, so chin up. Better luck next time. I am going to Al Ahli driving school. my teacher is great but the system there isnt and the rta weell you know what happened with me. I went for a 7:30 am test on purpose. but what do you do with a guy who speaks words that dont make sense to you? they have our papers which clearly state our nationality. Clearly he didnt know how to read in english that I am not from an Arabic speaking country. Thank heavens for a kind hearted husband like mine...made me smile.

i am to go to the driving school next week to take my lessons before the rta test. I will complain in the meanwhile. I did complain that the guy was arab n i didnt understand stuff. he comes and starts creating a scene that i am accusing him about my test failuure. I hate the man. I was the first person in the morning with 3 other ppl. one was pregnant, other was having her second test with the same rta testing guy and it was me...obviously the preggers woman passed cos apart from being preggers, she was a good driver....the second one was just happy she passed cos the guy had made her cry last time. After speaking to people, i have realized that all they want is our money. I do not think he had the permission. the pregnant lady spoke in arabic and told me that the guy has just informed us that we will be taking the test with him. and i am like what the ****, he is a man and on top of that arabic speaking...so odd.

How are you supposed to understand instructions if you don't speak the language? The theory test comes in Arabic, English, Hindi and Urdu and they have instructors that speak many languages. I would definitely bring this up. When I did my license, the instructors all spoke at least 3 languages and the RTA examiner I had also spoke to each of us in our own languages, so really I find no excuse for this. I really don't understand how you can begin to undertake a test, when you can't understand the instructions given to you. edited by Chocs01 on 05/10/2011

I think you should have told him at the beginning that you dont understand Arabic and ask for a different instructor. I passed my test after failing twice . it is very common here to fail the test .You should also know that there is a limit on the number of people who could be accepted everyday in Dubai. maybe they had already passed enough people for one day :) Better luck next time and make sure to request for an English speaking instructor

It should be made clear to the person paying for the lessons/test(s) that the language used will be Arabic, as the OP obviously didn't expect this to be the case when she paid for the test. And no, I don't think you can expect it to be in Arabic when everything else here is in English unless it suits to confuse (such as traffic/police notices).

English as the language of communcaition , INCLUDING many at the RTA. Actually that is incorrect - the language of communication at RTA is Arabic - all communication coming from RTA is in Arabic, including emails. edited by Princess_I on 05/10/2011 ..you get English e mails from them! edited by spongemonkey on 05/10/2011

I think you are well within your rights to complain if you can't understand the language that the instructor is speaking to you in! ****** ridiculous! Really? What country are you from that allows people to sit for their licence in what ever language they desire? How about the UK for a start? Where SO much money is spent on people who live there and don't learn the language and send their children to school unable to speak English??? Oh and as regards the driving , here you go!!! People who don’t speak English "Driving examiners are very experienced at dealing with candidates who speak little or no English and they’ll be able to manage the situation accordingly. For example, sometimes this will include writing place names so it is clear to candidates where they are being asked to drive to. To help all candidates, when asked to follow a series of verbal directions the examiner can show a diagram, so that they can picture the route they’ve been asked to take. Just as currently, the candidate can have an interpreter along with them on their test if they wish. Since 6 April 2010 ADIs have been able to act as an interpreter for their own pupils. I didn't know women can take the RTA driving test with male examiners! I thought even if we have male instructors the test will be taken by a female examiner. I failed my test the first time as I was so nervous, passes the following week with the same examiner and she seemd to pass everyone that day. Both times she asked our Nationalities and spoke to the Arabic ladies in Arabic and English to the rest of us. Wishing you better luck next time.

I think you are well within your rights to complain if you can't understand the language that the instructor is speaking to you in! ****** ridiculous! In France you only get spoken to in French, as is the case in many countries. How absurd to demand to be spoken to in a foreign language. France is a special case. In the US, you can take the driving test in Vietnamese, Spanish, French, pretty much any language you request. And that is how it should be in a place that encourages foreigners to move there. That's only the written part, though, isn't it?

Cant compare to France. In UAE many times even if someone speaks Arabic, the other person replies in English if the Arabic of former isnt good enough, that would never happen in France. I dont think you should be able to "demand" English, but you should certainly have the right to request the reasons given in English

France is not an immigration-seaking country. Here, a healthy % of the population speak English as the language of communcaition , INCLUDING many at the RTA. So no I don't agree with you. To the OP, I would complain to the company edited by derien on 05/10/2011

How can you be allowed to take a test with an instructor that doesnt speak English? Surely you have to understand what he is asking you to do and it is difficult enough driving here without being able to understand what he asks of you. Request an English speaking one afterall it is the business language here Good luck next time. I failed my 1st time in the UK... 2nd time lucky :-)

Sorry to hear about that. I also sat my test here in Dubai (I couldn't drive before) but was very lucky to have nice instructors, 6 different guys, all the way through and an OK examiner. Lots of people fail repeatedly before passing and you were at a massive disadvantage with this guy talking in a language you don't understand so don't take it to heart. Good luck next time round :)
