Don't think I ever said I wouldn't actually repay it - having previously had another very wealthy but mean boss maybe I shouldn't have been so surprised! Having worked out the approximate expenses I never claimed, he does indeed owe me money! Not a lot but we shall see if this works both ways - if I get a reply to the email I sent them saying I hadn't claimed expenses and they ask me for them, they'll be in for a surprise - and yes I will ask for it down to the penny!

I'm kinda surprised by all the people saying ignore it/don't return it. Whether it is a pittance to your employer or not, it was paid in error and is not your money. If you have legitimate outstanding expenses then by all means claim them. But keeping money that is not yours because you feel it is a drop in the bucket to him doesn't sit right with me. It might be a small sum but it is HIS money. If you felt you weren't paid fairly or due a bonus etc the time to address that would have been when you were employed - not by keeping this amount. Your are 100% right!!, I was surprised too that people said , ignore emails and dont worry about it.. if this happens to me and they made a mistake, I'll return their money.. no one like to give money that is already in your bank account, but then again, it doesnt belong to you.. I would return it, its not worth it.. I always say, you always need people u work with, no matter what, so dont burn bridges with them, it really is not worth it..

I completely agree. If this was turned around, and your maid decided to keep some change that you'd left around because you wouldn't miss it, and it was a pittance to you but made a difference to her, the ladies on the board would be all over it. The same principal should apply. If you didn't earn it, you shouldn't keep it.

I'd ignore it...it would cost them more to take you to the small claims court to get it back than the amount, plus you can't claim costs back in the small claims court.

I agree with Princess I, first of all i would have ignored it. But second best is to mail them a check in AED, less your expenses or bank charges. How petty of them.

I didn't earn it I agree, but knowing my salary and how that pans out in the scheme of things over a month it's a pittance to him. I've sent her an email thanking her politely for acknowleding my hard work, but stating that I hadn't put in any expenses for travel over the summer (was combining visits to him with consultations for DD), nor any phone bills accrued. I reckon he will end up owing me money I think and if it's 5p then I want it! Calculator's out!

Legally they cannot claim the money back from you if it was their mistake, they can only ask. As for not giving you a reference,i doubt they would be that petty.

Just makes sure if you do return it; that all bank charges are incurred by the receiving end or send a cheque in UAE dirhams - will take them a month to cash it and they will be charged for it.....

I know it's a measly sum but if you didn't earn it, you should return it. It would be the right thing to do, as annoying they have been about this. Besides, you really don't know their circumstances or how well/poorly their business is doing at the moment, maybe there is reason why they're scraping after every 123 pounds.

. It's not worth it exactly - so why be so mean! Yes I did leave on good terms, well as good as it gets when it's a one man band - the smaller and more personal the employer, the more they take an employee's notice as a personal slight in my experience! Reference? Possibly, possibly not! Sad thing is I met up with him over the summer for meetings on several occasions, he knows all the circumstances regarding my DD's health issues - the consultants we've seen, the medication costs involved, and he asks for this paltry sum (for him) back! True but what if things were to turn nasty over this? I mean, he is obviously a ****. You need to be the better person and just return it. And when you do, make sure you make them feel guilty

Did you leave on good terms? Do you need a reference from them? If so, I would return the money. It's not worth it

I would ignore it and as Princess says, pretend the email never reached you. This is Dubai after all and it wouldn't be the first email not to arrive !

Her email started off 'Thank you for all the hard work you've done for X'. Feel like going back and saying well I presumed that was my bonus for all the hard work! Not like you ever gave me a pay rise. Don't feel I can ignore it but also not overly bothered about a reference. Just so bl00dy cross about the pettiness in the scheme of things, having done some of the accounts!

The only reason to repay is if you are still hoping for a good reference from them. Otherwise, forget it.

I am so upset - I worked for this guy for 4 years plus, easy job but very frustrating at times - I quit in August, his dipsy accountant (wife) paid me a full month's salary instead of pro rata! They've now asked for a measly £123.08 exactly to be paid back! WTH! How mean can you get! Times are tough even for Harley Street guys I guess.
