You see - it is all a choice of words and what is " good" or " offensive" to someone is not to another e.g. if you were to call your maid or gardener in the Caribbean your "Girl" or "boy" they would go nuts!:\: Historical connections.

I don't know if I'm exaggerating or not but I never call her maid, or cleaner or whatever. She is Jeniffer, "our girl" or a nanny even though she is helping me in the house etc. She is an employee and I treat her fairly. My boss treats me fairly and I pay her back by being loyal, efficient and professional at work and I expect the same from people. If I do wrong or abuse I'm sure my boss will show me... I'm no different from Jeniffer she is just les fortunate money wise

IAMVP You say they are domestic servants but it would do you good to remember they are also HUMAN BEINGS, & have every right to have a contract. Somebody should make sure you know what a cattle prod is. Guess you must work for Al Ahliya & do you have a contract???????????????????????????? No I don't work for them. I know what a cattle prod is. Yes, domestic servants are human beings.....and why would it do me good exactly?

I agree kansou. I wouldn't think of proceeding without drawing up some basic guidelines first. It's so easy to have someone sit there and nod and smile and say 'yes ma'am' and yet three months down the line it's like you never had that conversation..... Not always their fault perhaps, just communication failure, but it never hurts to have as much clarity as possible about what you expect from the off. This a wise strategy in ALL things, including employing builders etc., at home in the UK! THREE months down the line? Try 10 years and then they still decide to do something completely different as if they have never done it before! :\:

Just remember that they are domestic servants and do not come under the labour courts here. If you hire locally then you are more than likely going to have someone with a lot of demands and stuff (?) If you choose a maid from the books in an agency (like Al Ahliya) then they will be fresh and new and have no expectations.

Why would you bring someone who doesn't speak English??? Well what I did is I prepared a schedule for every day, every week and every month duties, u ll have a contract anyway when u ll be doing her visa, but some guidelines on how to behave, what to do and what not to do at home won't harm I think

Just get a cattle prod and make sure she knows what it is for. Contract? She is a servant, not an accountant. Jeez. Which pre-historic cave did you crawl out of??

As part if the sponsorship process you will be given a formal domestic worker contract that covers the domestic workers responsibilities and also your responsibility to her too.

ladies, ya gotta make sure your new maids can read and understand what you are saying?|??? if you think they cannot, then find someone who speaks their language who can write what you want down so you know they understand....until they can speak with you :)

Hi, I´ve seen one old thread here where someone said that she wrote a contract to the maid. I know it´s not official but I really would like to have something signed where she could understand her duties and rights and my duties and rights. Does anybody has any template I could use or "inspire" myself? Thanks
