Hi everyone,

I was wondering how you are treated by Emiratis? Do you have Emirati friends? What are your experiences with local population?

The locals I have met are mostly friendly. But I have never had the opportunity to be *friends* with them. I think there are not many locals here which is weird! And I think it is just a normal question Domestic Goddess in training. Have seen loads of these type of questions in many forums relating to migration to different countries. You think "How are you treated by Emiraties" is a normal question? Moreover to be placed on a public forum? As if anyone will post anything other than.

i think that D G I T got out the wrong side of the bed this morning !!! she was only asking a question and there's no need for the harsh reply!!!! Not at all, i was responding to the OP post inferring i made comments that i did not, the reply was not harsh, it was intelligent. You can not label people based on their nationality or base how you integrate with others based on responses from an internet forum, do you disagree with this? These sorts of threads always become messy and down right racist, my request was to keep perspective and find out exactly what the OP is looking for.:)

This has to be one of the most obscure and ridiculous questions ever heard. Why should locals be any different to any other nationality of human being? Whether as an individual expat you integrate with locals would have been a more sensible question. I never said locals are in any way, shape or form inferior or bad. I was just asking people about their general experiences. Cultural aspects and all that. I never said they are not human. I could intergate with locals just fine. My husband is from GCC country and has beduin friends from UAE, as well as some family members who live there. I am however not an Arab and I just wanted to make sure I can integrate well. That's all. Pixie2011, if you re read my response you will see that at no point did i infer any of what you have written. I suggested that your opening post was not well worded nor explained what exactly you meant. You state in this post "you could integrate with locals just fine" and then write "I am not arab and I just wanted to make sure i can integrate well". A little bit of an oxymoron. Why exactly do you feel that "Arabs" as you state should be different from any other nationality? My point was that persons of Arabic heritage are human beings and with that will come the normal traits associated with the human race. Your ability to integrate with any person of any nationality will be based on your own abilities to communicate . My point is that no forum can tell you how you will integrate with another human being, how one person integrates and communicates will have no bearing on how you do. The negativity you responded to my post suggest you have some preconceived ideals why else would you state things that were not written? I still find your question and response obscure and wonder what exactly is concerning you. Perhaps a trip to the cultural center and Jumeriah Mosque may help you further. edited by Domestic Goddess-in-training on 13/11/2011

Before i left work to have DD i used to work with a few Emarati's,always found them to be very polite and kept their feelings/thought to themselves until you got to know them. Not reserved, always willing to give most things a go but the real them was burried a bit deeper. Now that i have left work i dont have any/much interaction with the locals but I do know if ever i was stuck i was stuck at the side of the road or had a problem at a goverment office they are always the first to help and hapy to do so.

I know people from everywhere including some Emiratis, in general I think women are on another planet compared to men, whichever the country of origin. One of my best friends is Emirati and yes I've met her family quite often, but what qualifies her in my eyes is her being strong, funny, smart, unconventional and goodhearted (like my friends of other nationalities).

I would love to be surrounded by them. I am learning Arabic but I couldn't practice much, we do not have any Arabic speaker in the office. :( you don't need to be surrounded by locals, you need to know few Arabs only to practice your Arabic :)

I know lots of locals from Dubai and other emirates. I’ve been to their homes, they’ve been to mine and we continue to have good relationships despite the fact that I now live in the UK.

Don't tell me off, but I am not sure that I would know an Emirati if I saw one.... But what I can say is that on more than one occassion now I have been stuck with my car having broken down, and on both occassions it was an arab person who very kindly came to our rescue. Really kind, helpful and generous wherever they had originated from.

IMHO, Emiratis don't tend to mix with Western expats. However, there are some exceptions as most people on here may know an Emirati or two but I'd be surprised if they were invited into their home. Agree with AnonDubai, they don"t normally hang out with expats unless you lived here for long time and either studied with some locals (like DH & BIL live here for the past 25 years, studied in local schools and made local friends this way) or make business together. Wanted to add, that there is a small number of original bedouins (sp?), whereas most of them are either of Iranian decent or mix families. edited by dramaqn on 12/11/2011

I have a couple of Emirati friends and colleagues at work. They're extremely nice people and cannot say anything bad about them. Remember you will always have good and bad people, no matter what country they're from. The Emirati population is very small here so interacting with them is not as easy and you would think but it is possible :)

I don't see how they are different from other nationalities. The way you treat them, the same way they will treat you. Just wondered about general experiences. Of course what it comes down to is treat like you want to be treated. That is absolutely true.
