We are travelling (UAE residents) with family (visiting from UK) to Oman in next few weeks. Has anyone travelled there recently and can give us any advice regarding visa costs / requirements? We thought travelling to Oman for short break would be very straight forward but are starting to hear about conflicting visa/cost requirments. Also, we have insurance which covers Oman, but do we need to apply for an 'Orange Card' as mention in another thread.

Many thanks ladies - all your comments have helped. Decided to head down to the Embassy and hope for a speedy exit at border control!

I understand the wife being charged 50 dhs as travelling with sponsor but how is husband only charged 50 as he won't be with sponsor or does this rule not apply to men? If he has a UAE visa the charge is 5 rhyals (sp) - 50 dhs - nothing to do with sponsor.

If you have a UAE visa the charge is 50 dhs, if you don't it's 200. My husband's just left for Oman and that's what he says the notice says...no mention of sponsor. that may be what the notice says, but thats not what happens. as i said my boy who has lived here for 14 years has a residence visa and the school organised an omani visa and they all had to pay 200dhs each! its the usual thing here one rule for one and not the same rule for another etc.

My advice would be don't go on a Friday, unless you want to be in line for 2 hours. You probably know better....we didn't have an option to go a different day.

We travelled to Oman two weeks before Christmas 2011. UK passports, UAE residents. DH is my sponsor so only 50dhs/pp at the Omani Border Post at Wajaja/Hatta. Must have hit a quiet time because we were in and out of the Border Post within ten minutes. (We've never bothered to get visas in advance and we've travelled to Muscat nine times in the last twelve months. If you get your visa in advance it just means that you don't have to go into the Wajaja Border building and fill out the form, pay, and queue for your visa. You can just drive through to the right hand side of the building and stop at the window with the green light and get your passport stamped. By the time you've been to the Embassy in Dubai to drop off the application and returned to collect the visa it's probably going to take more time than getting it done at the Border Post.) Foursome in front of us, all UK passport holders, two UAE residents, two visitors who had been in DXB for three weeks. UAE residents paid 50dhs/pp (husband was wife's sponsor), visitors were charged nothing. Go figure.

Thanks. It might be a good idea to go down to the Omani Embassy. We are UAE residents but our visitors will just be holding their UK passports. By going down to the Emabassy does this mean we should be able to go straight through border checks? you can get the visa beforehand if you wish. it doesnt mean that you bypass the lines though. for eg my youngest went to khasab with the school, even though they are resident visa holders, because they went without their sponsor they were all charged 200dhs each!!!! they did have to wait at the border for 3 hours too! for that privilege!!!!

Does anyone know the exact number of days from the time you enter Dubai to the time you enter Oman where you can get the Omani visa free. I will be travelling to Oman 10 days after entering Dubai so I am hoping the visa fee to Oman will be waived as I dont have a residence visa in my new passport. Do you have a residence visa in your old passport? You can just put the two passports together with a rubber band and that is no issue. Maybe you could ring the Omani Embassy here and find out the exact number of days it can be.

I have just come back from Muscat by car so feeling fresh on this one!!! As a UAE resident with British passport, your visa will cost Dhs50 if you are the sponsor or travelling with your sponsor. However, if you are travelling without (my husband is my sponsor and was not travelling with me), it will cost you Dhs200! So long as you have car insurance that covers Oman, you do not need anything else car wise. I would highly recommend that you go down to the Omani Embassy in Bur Dubai and get your visas beforehand and then there are no surprises at the border for you. They open from 8-1pm every day (although think they close earlier on Thurs) and are very helpful - I took our passports in at 8 and picked them up at 12 the same day. The time before only waited one hour for them so depends on how busy they are.

There is a limited time frame within which visitors to the UAE can enter Oman free. It is something like within 9 days of arrival in the UAE. I know this because we travelled to Oman with my sister and her family right after Xmas last year. Their visas were free. It is a joint UAE-Oman tourist initiative.

Many thanks. We heard that Oman / Dubai had relax their visa requirments and allowed people on holiday visas to travel for free, but sounds as if our visitors will have to pay 200 dhs.

Hi Guys, if you have a residents visa, it will cost you 50dhs a piece... if you don't, the cost is 200. Relatively straightforward, if you are going to spend some time in Oman, make sure you by oman car insurance. HTH :)
