Thanks for all your feedback., i was just surprised at the disparity. If you asked the same question about filipinas you would be told 1500 as min, 1800+ for someone with experience. This lady has worked for the same family in dubai for 6 yrs and is extremely capable, so have no problem with the level, i was just surprised at the range! Thanks
I would not be surprised at the disparity at all. Everyone here is paid according to their nationality and ethnicity, it is normal here. The cost of living back in their home countries plays a large part.
Before anyone tells me if it is right or wrong, it is what it is.
We paid ours 2000 dhs after 1 year. Before that it was lower with increases every couple of months because she was so good. She has recently returned home and her friend is coming up who wanted the same as her. We said no point blankly. Offered 1500 to start with increases that come with loyalty. She was happy with this.
I truly believe loyalty, trust and hardworking should be rewarded.
Good luck with it all
I should add that her English is great she has experience and apparently is fluent in Arabic, but I can't confirm the Arabiic

We've paid an experienced (with expat family and local) Ethiopian maid 1400 and quickly increased once we saw her capability.... it depends what salary they started off at and how generous the salary increases they received.. this was 3 yrs ago however so perhaps the market has gone up?

You could call and check when you do the reference check how much she previously got paid.
Why dont you start her off which something which is slightly lower then what you pay your current helper with an increase in 6 months to take her upto what your helper gets now.
Thanks mushypeas. I called the agencies who told me that the going rate is 750 for an experienced maid (shockingly low!) , this lady is saying she was paid 2000 which is a massive difference. What do you think, is this what she should expect? This is more than we pay our current lovely lady from the philippines (not by much admitedly)
Do you doubt the Ethiopian maid's word about her previous salary or do you feel that you are not willing to pay her as much? My maid signs payment vouchers to confirm receipt of her salary. Does the Ethiopian maid sign anything with her previous employer? How long has she been working in UAE? A friend of mine paid her maid 3000 but she has been working in this country for almost 10 years, I think.
When we hired our previous Indonesian maid a few years ago, the agency told us to pay her 700 as she had worked in Saudi previously for 5 years. However, considering we would have paid USD400 to a Filipina maid, we paid her 1200 instead. We then increased her salary after she completed the 1st year.
agencies will tell you 500-600 for non experienced and 600-800 for experienced Ethiopian, but by experienced they dont mean what you and me would perhaps mean, you would most likely still need to train someone who came over through an agency regardless. I was trying to recruit an Ethiopian girl locally and they all wanted well over 2000. If you like the girl, then offer her 1800 with an increase in 6 months and see what happens :)
Edit to add, I do not agree with the low wage stated, I am simply stating a fact, these are the wages any agency will tell you for an Ethiopian girl about to arrive.

Ring one of the agencies like al shamsi labour supply or al ahliya and as them what the salary is for an expereinced Ethiopian Housmaid. they will give you an idea of what the rate is.
Hi, what's the going rate please? We have just interviewed a lovely lday, but were surprised at her salary ie high! Any guidance would be appreciated please. Thanks
it is very rare (almost impossible) to find an ethiopian girl looking for work already IN Dubai. The ones that come from Ethiopia generally come with little or no English and no training, so it seems once they are here and have some experience their rate is fairly high.
