once again thanks for the reply, things are going to be moving very quickly for us, hubby is on his way back after spending a week in abu dhabi checking over contracts etc. looks like im going to get a visit over a week on monday to help decide on where we're going to live and we'll be in country by 1st April. I had my 20 week scan today- found out we're having a little boy, but also that placenta is lying low and partially covering cervix....nhs are going to scan me again in 5 weeks to see if any change just so i know where we're at once we get over. this is stressing me a little and so mind is racing re selecting a hospital/doctor etc.....think we're going to be living somewhere near Raha beach, or Kalifa A....any suggestions or recommendations to get me started?:(

Nappies i find roughly the same price, but you get much better deals at home which makes them way cheaper, e.g. Tesco's BOGOF's. Wipes way cheaper at home, i stock up on sainsbury's basics at 30-odd p a pack when at home if baggage wight allows. Here i use boots own which are 12dhs a pack = £2, though i tend to buy them when they are BOGOF (Boots is the only place here you will find the deals like you do at home) Formula is twice the price here on the brands you will know. I used SMA after i finished BF, and the small tins are 55dhs = £9.50, whereas at home the large, double-sized tins are about £9 from memory. There are lots of brand to choose from though, abd some are cheaper. I just went with what i knew from home, and after a bit of trial and error on what suited DD we ended up with the SMA. Range in Next is great, prices about 1/3 more than home and sales are nowhere near as good as at home! I Always stock up int he summer and boxing day sale as next is one of my faves too for kiddies bits. Breastfeeding is very much encouraged. Im in Dubai so can only speak from experience here, but there are plenty of facilities here in the malls, private feeding rooms etc. The hospitals (again in Dubai) are VERY pro-breast feeding usually, and i think some women get given a bit of a hard time if they choose not to! So you will have no problems on that front. Same as everywhere, discretion is key, but certainly nobody expects you to be feeding your newborn in a public bathroom or anything! Perhaps investing in some feeding wraps would help? DD and i managed for 6 months with a pashmina shawl and a cleverly directed chair all about town, without getting so much as a second look. good luck with your move, and if you have any more questions, ask away! Perhaps some of the ladies can help with the more Abu Dhabi centred stuff...

thanks ladies, you've certainly helped with the decision whether to get stuff before the move, think i'll be stocking up here and shipping it all courtesy of hubby's company! he's visiting next week and has a list of things to check prices of, but are we talking more/less/the same kind of prices for things such as Nappies/Wipes....formula (should we need it?) whats the score with breastfeeding- im making the assumption it isnt the done thing in public in Abu Dhabi? Kie- you mentioned Next (one of my favourite stores) whats the range like over there? and again prices....gosh i have loads of questions and am just itching to have the answers. V excited about it all. find out next week where we'll be living etc.........

There is no waterbirth in Abu Dhabi only in Al Ain http://www.alaincromwell.com/. Homebirth is illegal. Dr. Elsa Loseva (German ob-gyne)of Al Rawdah German Medical Centre ( http://argmc-uae.com/ )is great. If you really prefer midwife delivery you can go to Corniche Hospital. For the paedias: Dr. Maurice of Cure Diagnotic Centre ( http://cure.ae/doctors.asp ), Dr. Styles of Al Noor Hospital ( http://www.alnoorhospital.com/ ). Mamas and Papas (Al Wahda Mall - Abu Dhabi) for the good quality cots/bedcots. There’s also Mothercare, Next, M&S, ToyRus/BabiesRus in Abu Dhabi. We live in Abu Dhabi but most of baby stuff for our DD was bought in Dubai e.g. JustKidding Dubai http://www.justkidding-me.com/ and Bumblebee in Dubai Mall. Rear / forward facing car seat is not available here yet in UAE so better buy it there; we will be getting one for DD soon from www.carseat.se. Some of the mothers here can’t find a good nappy rash cream like methanium cream and teething gel/powder here so maybe you can include them on your shopping list.

Hi gem6065 M&P is much more expensive here and also frustrating as they don't have everything that the UK website has. I got my Mamas & Papas Sola pushchair and car seat in the UK too and flew it back with me (you can get some really cheap and good travel bags on eBay so it's still good as new when it arrives). I also bought the liner in the UK as I wanted a particular design and they don't do it here (just to make it comfy - obviously we don't need the winter footmuff one). We've actually decided to get all nursery furniture from IKEA as it's so expensive in Mamas and Papas - but we'll get all the decor bits from Pottery Barn kids, so it'll still look lovely in there. I'm going to go for the best possible cot mattress in IKEA, as my biggest concern is that baby is safe (still only 450 AED). I started seeing my doctor (Dr Nasreen at American Hospital) when I was 8 weeks and have been every month ever since, it's now gone to every two weeks when I got to 30 weeks. I took advice on here and decided to try American Hospital - and mind was totally made up when I went for a tour of the maternity ward where baby would be born, which I loved and felt very comfortable with. It doesn't matter if you swap around a few times until you find the right person, so just take your time.

M&P is definitely cheaper in the UK, so buy anything you need there. I bought my M&P sola pram and moses basket in the UK and bought them back with me. Although if there is bits you need to buy here, they generally have a good stock. Home births are not legal here, there are facilities for water births i believe now in some/one hospital, maybe some of the others can direct you more on that. Your birth can be made as clinical (or not!) as you want (within reason). I signed up with my OB at 12 weeks, but only saw her once at 20 weeks before my 37 week check up (when you have to start going every week). I just went to my regular GP for my urine checks etc, and didn't have any more scans than i would have had in the UK. It was more convenient for me, i had a low risk pregnancy so didnt need to worry too much. My actual birth was attended by midwives until the 'main event' when the OB came in to deliver, so i saw her for about 30 mins out of the whole 13 hrs! Good luck with your move :-)

Hi, we are about to move out to Abu Dhabi around the end of March and im just trying to find out a few things, hopefully you ladies will be able to guide me. Firstly- we need new nursery furniture as baby no 3 due in July but baby no 2 will only be 14 mth and still requires cot etc....what are the prices like over there. There is a cot/day bed i have my eye on which is £240 here in the UK, aleady discovered that items in Ikea can be cheaper over in UAE than UK so was thinking may be the same with M and P? also, what is stock range like-can i get pretty much everything id be able to get in UK? in addition to this, i've been reading a few threads and seems a nightmare trying to decide where to have baby....which hospital etc! I've been used to midwife led care with first 2 babies and all this talk of doctors etc seems very clinical. does anyone have home births, water births etc.......
