So, hubby killed a scorpion in the garden last night. We are in Mirdif. Here I was thinking they all lived in Arabian ranches. Oh well.
Im not to concerned although maybe I should be? Do scorpions nest? Can I get pest control to do anything? Where do I look for them? I googled but all the info is on Scorpions in Arizona, lol. Maybe Arab ones are different? Just a bit concerned there may be more and maybe I shouldnt be as chilled out about this as I am?

It was white btw, if that makes a difference.

We saw loads over New Year in the desert. They were white/transparent - i always thought scorpions were big and black. :\: Are you sure they weren't Camel Spiders? They're part of the Scorpion family but are harmless.

Scorpion venom is a mixture of some of the most potent and biologically active compounds in the animal kingdom and scorpions should be treated with caution. Although a scorpion sting is frequently localized, some victims of stings may feel a sharp pain followed by numbness, drowsiness and an itching of the throat. This can be accompanied by excessive saliva and the tongue becomes sluggish with the jaw muscles contracted. If large amounts of venom have entered the blood system, difficulties in co-ordination arise and body temperature increases while the production of saliva and urine are reduced. Touch and sight can be affected, with sensitivity to strong light. There may also be haemorrhages and convulsions with increasing severity. Most victims are normally out of danger within three hours but they should receive medical supervision for at least eight hours. Primary first aid for scorpion stings is to reassure the victim who will be suffering from shock. Clean the wound and then try to isolate it by immobilizing the site of the sting. Use a firm supporting bandage but not a tourniquet, and hold the limb up to avoid the venom going directly to the heart. If possible keep the site of the sting cold by placing it in iced water. Although fatalities are very rare, do seek medical help, particularly in the case of small children and invalids who are most at risk. In some cases, an anti-venom can be administered and these work well if given early enough. However, in other cases a painkiller is all that can be given but recovery should be rapid. http://www.uaeinteract.com/travel/snakes.asp

Black scorpions look more fearsome but the transparent ones have more powerful venom. Commonly found in gardens, (not always AR!), they are active at night, especially in the summer, sleeping by day in dark places. The sting is intensely painful and generally localised. Some people may suffer further ill affects including diminished co-ordination and even convulsions. Seek medical attention. The white/clear ones are the nasty blighters as DF says, a bite will def need anti venom within a few hours of. Really nasty things.

Purple - I agree - Mirdiff for me!!! Have a look at a pic of a camel spider, pretty horrid and my hubby thought it was a scorpion when he 1st saw it! They are very pale in colour... ok, I will not sleep tonight. camel spiders look totally vile, plesae tell me we dont ahve them on 78 street??? Confirmed that last nights beast was a scorpion for sure though. We took a photo of it on close up zoom so that we would be better able to identify it just incase, lol

place a hot water bottle on a sandy area in your garden at night. Early morning lift it up and see what is beneath it. If there are more scorpions (highly likely) then they will be huddled underneath it. Whenever I go camping I always find scorpions under my pillow in the morning. They like me a lot. I also found many in my bedroom when I was little. What do you mean you find them under your pillow when you go camping? do you not have a tent with a zip to keep these things out? Im worried now as I just went camping in the desert, i dont want to go back if im gonna have scorpions crawling over my face at night??!lol.....arab style camping, no tents! woman!!!!!! are you crazy!!!! I saw a cockroach and freaked. Everytime My boyf went to the tent I ran behind him and zipped it up so nothing would get inside!

Perhaps the economic downturn hit the scorpion population and they all had to move out of Arabian Ranches to (whisper) Mirdif! lol, or maybe they got smart ;) I would pick Mirdif over AR anyday :)
