I'm of the general consensus that kids are mollycoddled now days and forms of punishments we received as children are now conceived to be child abuse. The fact that there were women crying in the audience upset me more than seeing the kid have a cold shower! Political correctness in the 21st century has gotten out of hand in every aspect of life. Just sayin! :)

I do not condone how this woman has behaved but it did bring back memories of the unusual punishments of my youth. It may be an Australian thing but in the 70’s the rage was for giant wooden forks and spoons that were hung on the wall. There were many occasions where I was forked on the back of my thighs for being cheeky. When not being forked I got the standard smack across the backside with a hairbrush never knowing if I was going to get the smooth or bristle side. I can also remember as punishment for swearing in front of his sisters after being told not to a number of times my mum made my brother bite down on a bar of soap (so it got in between his teeth) and then had him brush with a squirt of dishwashing liquid instead of toothpaste. I don't think there were any long lasting ill effects although I do recall Stephan having chronic diarrhea that night. It may have been ok in the 70’s but n 2011 I think my mum would be locked away. not at all an australian thing. we were "forked" (love the expression) with a wooden spoon, belt, shoe, hairbrush / whatever was closest to my mum at that moment in time. today, we giggle about it and love teasing her about it but all 5 of us believe we are better off because of it. and we dont love her any less. we were always just threatened with black pepper in the mouth after a slip of the tongue, but mum never actually did it. probably why i f#$%king swear like a f%^&*& sailor today. :D

Just watched the video...don't see a lot of love from that Mom, so very sad :( The "tongue spanking" I've heard of is a drop and make them count to 5, then they spit it out and rinse, not endure verbal abuse until she decides he's had enough :(

I would equate the hot sauce to my mom washing my mouth out with soap for saying bad words. It was terrible tasting and cleared out my sinuses, but didn't inflict horrible pain...just an experience to a avoid in the future. I have a friend that uses the hot sauce technique and her children are incredibly happy, well behaved, and adjusted. She calls it a "tongue spanking." I think discipline techniques are different for each child in each family, as one way doesn't work for everyone. It's a moral and ethical matter, much like your choice of religion. A tiny drop of hot sauce is nothing in comparison to dousing their entire tongue with it...going to read the article now...

If this is the Dr Phil case - then I was completely disgusted - she should NEVER been allowed to adopt The poor child was a recently adopted small child who needed love and security and the woman has done him untold damage by her behaviour - the boy was clearly terrified to come home and tell his mother than he had got stuff wrong at school as he suffered this territble abuse - watching the woman's coldness I thought at the time that she had mental problems as she never once praised the child but looked for opportunities to punnish all the time

I posted my stories with a smile on my face as a trip down memory lane not as a means to invoke sympathy nor receive advice. We were raised in the 60's, 70’s and 80's and what was acceptable is likely unacceptable now. That is what I was trying to illustrate. I am sorry that you have bad memories of your childhood. I am very lucky. My memories are of a large and loving family where discipline was handed out consistently and love in abundance. The end result of all of this was 13 interesting, educated and law abiding adults despite the forking and dishwashing liquid.

I knew two mothers in Geneva who washed their children's mouths out with soap, or put black pepper on their tongues, when they were rude to them. ETA: This is in the C21st. edited by simpleasabc on 02/02/2011

Cyclone t please read the following: Positive Discipline from Jane Nelsen and you will see that what has been done to you and your brother is not acceptable. Discipline is not about pain and shame, it's about firmness, respect, and learning logical consequences. I'm no expert, but I cannot forgive my mum for hitting me with a wooden spoon when I was young because I had forgotten my alphabet back from the 1st day of school to do my homework. It's not the right way and what these people deserve is way more/worst then a few days in jail...

is this Lisa Welchel? Blair from "Facts of Life"? She's an advocate of 'hot saucing' although don't know if she's the 'inspiration' for the parents that are in the headlines now.

I threatened DS with Tabasco 3 days ago for bad language (very very bad) and he stuck his tongue out and said 'put it here'. So I handed him the bottle and said put it yourself if you think you deserve it. He put a drop on and ran off laughing. Bad MOm? Nah, useless one here.

My grandmother did that to me when I was a child if I used bad language! That was in the late 70's and 80's. Also rubbed sauce on my soothers , because I couldn't give up them still at the age of five. I grew up to love spice food and sometimes I threat my kids with the "sauce", but never used it. Suppose better than smacking.

Apparently, it's based on a book released in 2004 about discipline that kids should "feel physical pain" when being punished. DIdn't clearly hear the name of the author, but she looked pretty crazy... What do you think about that? How disgusting, unrespectful, and low....
