Can anyone tell me if the Australian and New Zealand meat I buy here in Dubai has growth hormones in it. I've tried talking to the butchers in some of our bigger supermarkets, they just look at me blank.

Excellent links, thank you ladies. I've decided to cut down my meat intake, what I do buy will be Organic. I defiantly don't need any more estrogen, LOL.

HGPs are currently registered for use in many countries including Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, South Africa and Japan. However, the European Union (EU) has banned their use and the import of products from cattle given HGPs since 1998. Source: Meat and Livestock Australia http://www.mla.com.au/About-the-red-meat-industry/Food-safety-and-quality/Hormone-growth-promotants Hormonal growth promotants or ’HGPs' are sometimes used to enhance meat production (growth) in livestock. Their use in New Zealand is tightly controlled and there is no scientific evidence of any detrimental impact on human health through the consumption of meat and meat products that have been produced using approved HGPs. [i'>Source: Foodsmart NZ (Government Website)[/i'> http://www.foodsmart.govt.nz/whats-in-our-food/chemicals-nutrients-additives-toxins/agricultural-production/hormonal-growth-promotants/ I would also think that from a business perspective it would be more profitable to use growth promotants in export meat due to the added premium paid compared to the domestic markets.

good to know that there is no hormones in NZ meat. I worked in France for meat/poultry exporters and had a long talk in Geant regarding the meat as I had few time found brown colour in beef meat.. !!! the guy argued that it was normal.. !!! I was so disapointed and I dont buy anymore meat in Geant, I bought organic minced beef in cafe organic (1 kilo aed 55) and I am not disapointed. beef is good quality and i can freeze it , quality is good. I also buy frozen chicken at organic cafe at aed 65 for full chicken (very good) all other chicken you find in super market are full of hormones and water.. except farm fresh chicken in carrefour (french) but expensive!!!!

My butcher at home in OZ said that growth hormones has been banned for a long time. We have eaten meat or chicken nearly everyday for all our lives and wouldn't say we are any taller than the norm!

Looks like its New Zealand meat for me next time I go down the market. It may be a law that these substances should be disclosed but my experience has been, most butchers don't understand the question when asked.

On a slightly separate but related note... does anyone what do they do to the chicken here? It's gross. Bought a 1.6kg bird at the organic supermarket at the weekend, it was delicious but it was AED 130! Finally is it possible to buy non-halal meat here at all (as I do not agree with the halal method)? Maybe I just ought to turn vegetarian whilst here.. Maybe you could try to find frozen chicken. I buy frozen chicken breast and it's not bad. Not sure where it is from.

I thought it was a law that all butchers, stores, etc, were required to disclose if hormonones were in foods they were selling. Could be wrong.. I may be delusional due to sleep depravation..

Why would they add hormones to the meat? Is it to fatten up the calf earlier?

T.V. just did a documentary on that exact thing. N.Z. meat supposedly does not use growth hormones and only Western Aus does. They wold have no idea where in Aus it comes from. I now buy NZ beef only
