DD was not putting on much weight (this was at 7 months and not as early as your sister's child), I was planning on NEVER giving her formula, but after my dad (who never pushes his opinion) insisted that she was hungry after feeds, I started supplementing solids and bf'w with formula. She really started doing better. I am not advocating stopping bf or anything. I still bf DD and she is almost 12 months old. But I do supplement her with formula after her solid meals and if dinner is 3 hours after her last bf of the day. It really seemed to help put her weight gain back on track. She is below the 15th pecentile cause she was a tiny preemie.

Thanks so much for your help and advice, BFC. I've passed along the number to her and I'll email you now.

If she's in the UK (just guessing, as you said Health Visitor), and you want to suggest alternative avenues for help, if you can let me know where she lives I can try to find out what help/support might be available in her area (my e-mail is khoury at null dot net). Alternatively, she could call the National Breastfeeding Helpline which is staffed by trained bf counsellors from the ABM and the BFN. Calls from a landline are automatically routed to the nearest available counsellor (geographically), so if she wishes they can both talk her through her situation and make suggestions, and refer her for face-to-face help for an observation of a feed and test weighing locally. 0300 100 0212 9:30am-9:30pm Test weighing can be tricky and often not really warranted, but there are situations when it is appropriate. Hopefully she will be able to find someone nearby with the appropriate experience and equipment (you need special scales). If she can get a face-to-face consult with someone trained, they can also observe a feed to see if milk transfer is effective and sort out problems in that area if there are any. *Hugs* to you and your sister - hope she gets the support and reassurance she needs soon.

I think she was 75th when she was born, so she's dropped considerably if she's now between 15th and 25th :(. My sister took her to the doctor today and he suggested test-weighing her to see how much she's taking, so she contacted the health visitor to arrange this as the doctor said. The health visitor said they didn't like doing this and told her just to come to the baby-weighing clinic on Thursday. I wish I was home so I could go with her and point out it's god s0d all to do with what they do or don't like doing! Grrrr. ETA: I spoke to my sister today and she was really down. She discussed the issue with her DH and do you know what his suggestion was? Put her on formula. I'd have smacked him myself if I was there. edited by DubaiCat on 08/02/2011

As long as she's been putting on weight consistently on the curve, no problem at all. If she's dropping percentiles (e.g. she was on the 25th percentile then continued to put on weight but at a slower rate so that she dropped to a lower percentile), then it might be an idea to get everything checked out - there are many reasons why this could be, no reason to panic, but best to identify a problem if there is one.

Thanks. Her other two grew like they were being fed fertiliser so this is new ground for her!

Oh dear. I've just spent the last hour trying to reassure her :(. But I guess they're all different - does anyone else have any idea if 5.68kgs is OK for 17 weeks? edited by DubaiCat on 07/02/2011 yes. it's fine. As per the WHO charts, she's somewhere between the 15th and 25th percentile, which is still normal, and you're right, all babies are different and it doesn't make sense to compare them to each other. Also to answer an earlier question, the WHO charts are adjusted for babies that are BF exclusively for 6 months.

Saying that, another baby who is 4 days younger than her, is minute compared to her - in weight and size, so maybe i just have a "big boned" baby ;)

Hmmm. That's not so good (for my sister, I mean). Is that what she weighed at the dr, or what you weighed her as at home? At Cecile's Saturday before last, so it's gone past 6kg's by now!

My sister is concerned DD3 isn't putting on as much weight as her two siblings. She's 17 weeks and 5.68kgs. I just found the WHO weight chart online but I'm not sure if it's the one that's been adjusted to suit BF babies - does anyone have a link please?
