I'm looking at booking flight to Glasgow in May... but I'm not sure who to fly with.

BA is Dhs1000 cheaper than Emirates, but Emirates is a direct flight. I am also concerned with BA and strikes etc... who would you fly with?
BA is Dhs2700
Emirates is Dhs3700

Have to set the record straight here - BA 106/107 is at the moment a brand new B777 with new First and Premium Economy (OK, with old staff some good, some great and some mediocre!) and new AVOD which is at least the equal of EK and probably better. It will soon be replaced for the summer with a B747. The other flights are with B777 and 767 which may be older, well I expect the 767 is. Club World is (IMO) better and much more consistent on BA than Business on EK except the A380 which is superb although with excruciatingly slow service. I think EK is better in economy, BA better in Biz and First is a matter of weather you prefer suites or an open cabin although the food is better on EK - I prefer EK's First although some find it a bit bling. I'd go with EK direct to non-London destinations unless you need the miles/points on BA. BTW, to whoever 'lost' BA Miles over xmas - if it was a miles only booking (plus taxes) you get a full refund as long as you cancel 24 hours before your flight so you need to pursue that with BA.

late in the day but need to add my piece..... BA are so hit and miss I'd rather not fly with them. Planes are old, staff are variable from the fantastic to the horrible et etc etc... given half a chance I'd go with someone else.

Has anyone flown Virgin Atlantic direct to Heathrow? Is it any good? I really like Virgin. Miles better than BA in my opinion. Great with kids too. Their food is a little better and the staff are quite attentive. Good if you fly business too as their business is upper class so you get the lie flat beds and the heathrow Virgin lounge is fab!

Thanks :) I'll be the common one asking for 10 pepsis and putting them in my handbag! *Joke* Pepsis??? Lightweight!! It's the vodkas you need to sneak into the bag. LOL agree!!! Last time we flew I was driving at the other end, so it was 4 red wines please ..... 2 for him 2 for me, but all 4 went to him, each time (x3!!). Oh boy did I regret that when sober at LHR with a v drunk DH!!! :-)

I would always go for the direct flight if possible. We've flown BA a number of times and in general had a fine if unremarkable experience. Im facing the prospect of having to fly BA with my son in the next few weeks due to it being a better connection for him. I'm dreading it even tho we're going first and I'm wondering if anyone knows whats it like. Just what should I be prepared for? And although it doesnt sound like it I am really trying to keep an open mind. Just don't expect much and you'll be fine :) You may have an ok experience, I hope you do - it's just not the same standard of service as Emirates or Etihad etc. If all else fails, take some drowsy anti-travel-sick tabs and sleep through it

For DS when he flew back at Christmas, Emirates was a lot lot cheaper than BA (by over 1,000 dhs). He had to fly to LGW and then on to Jersey whereas with BA he would have had to fly to Heathrow then take the shuttle bus to Gatwick to then take his connecting flight. So Emirates won hands down in terms of convenience of flights, service and price.

If you can afford Emirates, I'd go with that every time. BA have been at best tolerable and at worst absolutely horrendous every time I've flown with them. The staff, in general, have treated us as an inconvenience, the planes are nothing special, and I have been late every time. I rarely fly EK as can't afford it usually, but when I have it has always been a fab experience. The in flight entertainment really makes it a much nicer experience, as I can just get lost in a string of movies. Am flying with them tomorrow and really excited :) I'm even going to straighten my hair and put on make up at 4am cos I is well posh and is flyin wid Emirates innit :D

Emirates Emirates Emirates!!!! BA shafted me with our cancelled Christmas flight .... I'd paid £136 + 40,000 points for the 2 of us to fly one way to London on Dec 22nd. They cancelled the flight 48 hrs in advance, and offered a flight that would have us arrive around 23:00hrs on Dec 24th. No good to us, even more so considering the risk that flight might also be cancelled!! So once I checked I could get an Emirates flight (who's cancellations were minimal thoughout that period) I called BA back agreeing to take the FULL refund INC the points. No problem they assured me, ALL will be refunded. Do you think I've ever seen my 40,000 points again despite many phone calls and emails!?!?!?! 'Not our policy to refund points madam, whoever told you that was misinformed'. Arrrggghhhhh!!!! I am NOT happy with BA & would rather swim than book a flight with them in future!! Sorry, *rant over* ETA: not least to say Emirates are by far a more superior airline!!! I love flying Emirates :-) edited by Loopy Lotti on 16/02/2011

I am whole heartedly in the Emirates "camp" - their staff (in flight or ground) are EXCELLENT. Their planes and facilities, second to none. I have options to fly more cheaply, I don't - I have reached the point in my life and expectations where I just want to be treated with respect - Emirates provides that. BTW I am Canadian - I am so disgusted with my government's decisions as regards Emirates (and I fly Emirates to avoid my own national carrier - Air Canada which treats their "customers" with derision and disrespect and poor 4th cousins to many international carriers) that I am doing a one person campaign to try and get my government to sit up and smell the coffee. Given a choice Emirates will be it - if there is any choice other than Air Canada - I will take it.

There is no comparison between Emirates and BA - Emirates all the way. Agree. I promised myself years ago that I'd never fly BA again and never did! Always pleased with Emirates but not their speediness when it comes to tray clearing!

I would always go for the direct flight if possible. We've flown BA a number of times and in general had a fine if unremarkable experience. We did, however, get caught up in the Heathrow meltdown that left us stranded in London for a week (but hey, who wouldn't want to be stranded in London at Christmas?). We eventually got back to the US on US Airways and being in a position to directly compare BA and US Airways from an inflight experience I can safely say for all the complaints about BA, there are even worse major airlines out there.

less than business class - Emirates every time..as other posters say, THE best entertainment, food excellent, generous refills, lovely staff etc etc.. With children no way would i entertain stopovers though maybe on my own if the saving was significant.. our teen flew on his own last year and they never left him alone for a second !! Couldn't fault them... Less than business clas? I happen to think that all classes on Emirates are better than BA what i meant was business class on BA is bearable.... lol

Whoever you end up going with, beg for a seat in the bulkhead row... extra leg room makes me a happy passenger regardless of the airline :D

emirates definately I also do direct flights to Manchester - did a BA connection through Heathrow once and it was an absolute shambles - we were herded around in a shuttle bus like cattle - then kept in the bus for almost an hour "because the terminal was too crowded" - there were lots of nationalities and I felt ashamed to be British -no information- no help to make my connection which of course I missed - havent used BA since and wouldnt again I'm sorry to say

Emirates offer a direct flight and better service so I would chose to fly with them My calculation to decide if an indirect flight is suitable is usually based on cost. Extra travel time = 2.5 hours each way 1,000aed divided by 5 = 200aed I then convert it into AUD = $54 I then decide if a saving of $54 per hour is enough to make the extra fight time worthwhile Anything under $100 rarely is.

Emirates!! As other posters have said... direct is better, service is better (anything better than BA), entertainment system by far THE best, and you have the confidence of knowing Emirates won't strike.
