Hi,
we'll be moving to Dubai in September. Our kids will go to school in Oud Metha and my husband's work will be in Jumeirah Lake Towers.
As we do not know Dubai at all we wonder where the best place to live would be. Of course we want to spend as less time as possible in the traffic.

Thank you all

Explorer publish a number of different maps and atlases which are really useful for orientating yourself, just make sure you get the most recent version and be aware that 'Jumeirah' is used in many of the newer locations which are nowhere near the original 'Jumeirah' which is next to umm Suqeim between al wasl road and the coast. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/9948450132/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=9768182105&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0Y17CXJ23730KBN5YATN

Try wikimapia I highly suggest living somewhere in the middle like Jumeirah (Villas), barsha south (Villas) or business bay, downtown, sheikh zayed road (Apartments). it all depends on your budget, size requirements, villa or apartment etc

The business Bay area or Jumeirah /Umm Suquiem is kind of in the middle and your school run and husbands work would be manageable.

If you live in South Dubai, which is closer to hubby's work - Dubai Marina, JLT, JVT, Jumeirah Park, Springs, Meadows, Palm, Al Barsha, etc, the journey to Oud Metha shouldn't be too bad as you're going against the bad traffic. I live in South Dubai and Work near the airport at the other end and it only takes me about 25 mins in a morning.

I assume you are talking about DESS. Many people travel long distances to go there. There are always different routes to avoid SZR. For eg mums used to travel in from jebel ali which is further from DESS than JLT. They could do it in less than 30 mins. I lived way further out but still wasn't too bad. As long as you prepare for spending an hour each way on school run you will be fine. Location of housing would depend on budget.

Jumeirah 1,2,3 - umm Suqeim 1,2,3, al Safa 1,2, al manara and al Thanya would all be roughly midway between school and work with easy access to SZR. Also al wasl, satwa, al bada'a and um al sheif.

If we're talking about DESS consider yourselves extremely fortunate to have got a place - give it up as an absolute last result !! Look for housing near school and let your husband have the worst drive !!

School in Oud Metha = traffic Driving southbound on SZR in the AM and northbound in the PM = traffic I'm not trying to make you feel bad, but I won't sterilize it. I live north of Dubai Creek and my husband just started commuting daily to DWC. There is no good time when you avoid traffic. My husband drives all the way out of town to avoid traffic. Even though he drives much farther in distance he gets home at the same time as he would taking SZR. It's AWFUL. Maybe it's tolerable if your husband gets 2 days off for the weekend, but my doesn't. He is constantly exhausted. This week, because of the timings, he hadn't seen his daughters for 2 full days. It was sad for him...but he was too tired to even be sad! If I were you, I would try to get the kids in a different school. ASAP. There are so many more good schools in the south end of Dubai (closer to JLT). (SZR is Sheikh Zayed Road, the main road through Dubai) Best of luck...you are not in an enviable position.

Why would you do that to yourself? Ideally, you should live in JLT and have the kids go to school somewhere nearby. Otherwise, live near Oud Metha, maybe Health Care City or something and let your husband do the suffering.
