Dear ladies,

I contracted nail fungus a couple pf years ago, and I suspect it was in one of the spas here in the UAE :-( I am utterly ashamed of this, always hiding my feet, and as you know, it is not easy in a hot country like this :-( Not even my husband is allowed to see my feet, this is as you can understand a huge problem for me.

Is there anyone who could PLEASE recommend a good clinic/doctor that can help me with this?
I have heard that laser i a very good option, and a lot faster, anyone with experience of this?

My feet are ongoing to be free again!!!

Thank you!

Doctor on board. Fungal nail infections are very common specially in hot and humid country like UAE. but sometimes it is one of the sign of immuno-compromised state. Make sure to get your blood sugar checked. Fungal infections take notoriously long to heal completely. There are two modes of treatment used, topical and oral. Usually first topical is tried if not successful then oral is given but since failure rate of topical is fairly high some doctors straight away prescribed oral anti fungal. Its very common recurring condition any normal GP would be able to diagnose it. If it is already diagnosed by a doctor to be fungal nail infection then Loceryl Nail lacquer(amorolfine) can be used weekly (instructions are given on to leaflet). Hope it helps.

Well you need enough water to soak your feet in. I usually put a cup of it in a bowl, then stick my feet in. Warm water. You can just rub the ACV straight onto the nail. Don't use lacquer, the nails need to breathe and recover.

Very interested in this post! Lots of good advise on remedies. I too seem to have a fungal infection, presumably from continuous pedicures and also guilty of leaving nail polish on too long :( I have been using 100% tea tree oil on the nail twice a day each day as I read that is a good solution to help try clear it. Fairy Dust, for the Apply Cider Vinegar Soak, how much should you use to dilute, 1 cup Vinegar to 1 cup Water? Does anyone know if you should you also use a Nail Lacquer or just stick with the naturals like the Tea Tree, Vapo Rub, Apple Cider? I'm also pregnant so don't want to go to a Podiatrist who will recommend medication.....hoping to get rid of it naturally - thanks Ladies :)

That's good to know about the vicks. My husband contracted a nail fungus but left it for ages and then it started to spread on various parts of his body! He went to a dermatologist at Mediclinic who gave him tablets to treat his skin and a solution to paint on his toe nails. It took a few weeks but he is now happily fungus free. I can recommend Dubai Podiatry centre on Shk Zayed Road as they are fab, fab, fab but may not be covered by your medical insurance.

It's nothing to be ashamed of. Personally avoid the bleach solution - that's horrible and should ONLY be done twice a week. What you can EVERY DAY however, is soak your feet in a diluted Apple Cider Vinegar solution, this works and it works amazingly well. Also at night, rub Vicks Vaporub over the nail, the menthol kill the bacteria causing the fungus. I've personally used the above home remedies - 14 days, no more fungus. If your nail is very affected, once the fungus is dead, you need to wait for the nail to grow out.

Aaaah, ladies, thank you SO much for your encouraging reply, I am very grateful!! So sweet of you, and you are absolutely right I should´t be EMBARRASSED (probably a better word, yes). It just feels like everybody else has perfect feet, you know when you get this total obsession, and stare at other (women´s ;-) ) feet. This world is way to vain sometimes, but I just really would like to look down and see nice healthy toes :-( I will definitely try out your advice Livelytrish! Thanks to both of you lovely ladies, you made my day! <3

As Cheeky Monkey says, why on earth are you ashamed? Unless of course you mean embarrassed and that is nearly as sad!! For goodness sake, it happens to all of us, and whilst it's a nuisance it isn't life or death, (And you really need to sort out your relationship with your husband if you can't show him less than perfect feet!) But first sort your feet out, please try home remedies first before you medicalise this, soaking your feet every day for fifteen minutes in a bleach/water solution (1cup bleach to 10 water) then rub with tea tree oil. That works, Google for more suggestions but please give that a try. Oh and then tell your DH because you need to spend as much time as possible without shoes or socks on your feet, fungus loves being covered up. And whatever you do, do not let a doctor talk you into pills, they may kill your fungus but they will also kill your liver.

Why on earth are you ashamed, these things happen sometimes! Have you tried going to the pharmacy and getting an over the counter treatment? You shouldn't really need a trip to the doctor unless that hasn't worked. Also, until they are better I just paint them with a dark polish and voila, perfectly sun-worthy toes! At the moment I have two black and purple big toe nails due to a new pair of running shoes and I just use a nice dark nail polish and off I go! ;) Don't think my husband would notice my toes, fungal, black and purple or otherwise unless I put them under his nose, and I wouldn't do that because it would be a cruel and unusual punishment...!! But that's a whole other topic!
