Thanks everyone for your replies and encouragement. The girls come to the loo with me almost always so they know what it's all about. They do seem the stubborn type and will only sit on the toilet/potty when they instigate it. I guess I'll wait a few weeks and try again!

I started with my boys properly at age 3. Every now and again before that they would use the potty but very rarely. I think I had about 2-3 accidents in that week and that was it. I agree let the kids decide otherwise it puts so much pressure on you all. At night I didn't take my boys out of nappies til they were 4 and a half years old as the thought of two wet beds each morning was horrible. By leaving it late they have never had an accident at night. They are now 10. Go with your instincts not with what other mums tell you to do. Good luck :)

Some nationalities do teach their babies to wee on whistle/demand from very very young, the children never where nappies.

agree VP, lil miss was sitting on the toilet for fun and games very early, and I havent been to the loo by myself for over 6 years now so she knew full well what it was for. They get ready when they get ready. Just shouldnt be a stressful time for anyone, but a natural progression i think. Yep so true, the more you stress the more they are unlikely to go! Both my two were self lead toilet trainned at 2 and 2.5yrs old. My DS had at least 1 accident a day for about 3 weeks where as my DD only had a couple of accidents on the first day that she decided no more nappies.

aroha, I honestly believe that the earlier you get them used to sitting on the pot, the easier it will be. they have control sooner than a lot think.

Theres probably some truth to people of our generation being trained alot earlier...much as I can't stand people saying oh but i....etc etc. For our mums and grandmothers doing the washing was no easy chore...can you imagine the sheer numbers of cloth nappies involved? and feeding the lot through a wrangle or washing by hand? Theres motivation there enough to have us all out of nappies asap. Cloth nappies them selves were highly uncomfortable when wet apparently, chaffing and red bottoms anyone? Even a small tot's going to learn fairly smartish it's better to wee on the pot! Our disposable nappies are so highly absorbant that the child doesnt even feel wet...hardly motivation to learn at first, no?

oh how wonderfully laid back you ladies are about potty training! the quip about peeing into an eggcup by 6 months reminded me of my mother.... when DD was 14 months old Mother came to visit. Absolutely horrified by the fact DD was not potty trained and announced she must be retarded - I kid you not! No wonder our relationship has been strained for the last 30 years. DD is a wonderful teenager, fully potty trained and about to leave the nest for school.... :{ so take it all with a smile and shrug because if you blink they are all grown up.. My sister and MIL didn't call mine retarded but did do the 'oh he's not trained yet.... well all mine were trained by....' Lol! Sounds like my MIL. She claims she had my DH potty trained at 12 months! Mine was potty trained at 2yrs7mnths and took 4 days. I wanted to be sure he is ready,so when he was it went quick and easy. Those four days though were horrible...constant mopping, cleaning, washing!

I think that if you leave it up to the child then they will be closer to 3 (from all I have heard). Perhaps just getting them used to sitting on a toilet from a much earlier age would help, even before you really start training. Make sure they see you going potty too...and let them see inside...then let them see you give yourself a candy for being a good girl...

Just talked to my dad... got to love when the men give advice when they weren't the ones potty training the kids. But anyway this gave me a laugh so I thought I'd share. He said use a bell to indicate potty time. All I could think of was Pavlov's dog and DS going pee everytime the bell rang.... God help us from then on when driving on Emirates road or SZR haha. DS would peeing every second. omg that is hilairous! reminds me of a totally unrelated story. When DD was 2, everytime I put my hand on the horn in the car a little voice from the back would shout "beep beep f***s sake" Ooops bad mummy! Had to change it very quickly to "beep beep frog soup!"

My DD had several potty training trials with her daughter . It became a battle of wills between them and at the end she just gave up and let her wear nappies....She was over 3 years old when one day she said no nappies and from that time she was dry day and night ...never an accident. I am sure she was ready before that but she is very stubborn and wanted it her way or no way:)

we're back....two accidents. Thank goodness for wipes. He's loving it though....told everyone at school and kept pulling down his shorts and showing his pants! He will be three in June so I think he's ready...not sure I am though! Exile....don't push your girls and don't push yourself. They will let you know when they are ready. Don't stress over it!

when they are ready, it really is only a matter of days, promise. And take heart! I don't see any kids at school (or their own weddings) still in nappies, so it WILL happen.

Good luck little Freckles! Good luck with your potty training! DS #2 is proving to take much longer to be ready so I'm going to let his wife potty train him. LOL!!! Love it.

freckles is this the first day of potty training? exile my DS is just over 3 and we started this week. We've had 3 successes in 3 days. The rest were accidents. Freckles is on the school run...lil freckles asked to wear pants yesterday afternoon, and went in the potty 3 times in a row, pulling his pants both up and down (the clever wee man), my guess is he asked to wear them again this morning? who knows...he was fairly adament yesterday he was going to be wearing his pull ups in the morning! ah the joys, *sigh*

Good luck little Freckles! Exile, I think there is a difference between recognizing one just pee'd on the floor and recognizing the urge to pee. It sounds like your's aren't yet recognizing the urge to pee and therefore you are just running yourself ragged trying to clean up the mess. Let them go a little longer before you push potty training since they are only 2.5. Diapers may cost more but there's some safety net to them being in diapers vs being in underwear and you hear them say, "I have to pee" and you have a buggy full of groceries and not a potty in sight. When DS was ready I literally planned on secluding myself into the house for a few days. I stocked up on groceries so I didn't have to leave and then one day started. I set a timer for every 45 minutes and at that mark I put him on the potty. If one little dribble of pee came out he got a Skittle. We did this for two days and that was it, he never looked back and he only had two or three accidents after that. But I think the key was waiting till he was ready. Good luck with your potty training! DS #2 is proving to take much longer to be ready so I'm going to let his wife potty train him.

Well, theres lots of different advice you'll get exile ;) but I'd advocate child led...as far as I'm aware it's a connection in the brain, when that clicks they will make the transition quickly and cleanly, with very few accidents. (My experience anyhow) So far your girls are getting the connection...peepee after the fact, and it's only a matter of time before they will make the jump to needing to pee before it happens...literally seconds before, but heyho, lol! Pop them back in pull ups, encourage the use of the loo or the potty, whichever way you are going, keep the reward system in place, and when they are ready ready you will know. Maybe spend a few afternoons in the garden with knickers on? that way you wont be constantly cleaning the house, and the girls will start getting the idea. All kids are different, and there is no one age when they 'should' be toilet trained or anything else for that matter. Those mums who spout that their treasure was peeing in a cup at 6 months are just competitive skites. Go at your girls pace.

Well they're 2.5 years old. The eldest one (by a minute!) has started taking her nappy off all the time. Do you think they're not ready yet? They both pee on the floor and then say 'peepee'!! I keep having people pushing me to do this, but am I wasting my time?!! If they were 'ready' would they be peeing all over the floor as opposed to going on the toilet/potty?

I'm going through the same thing today with my girls. their first day was yesterday, what a disaster. Every inch of my lounge room got peed on! Out of the two of them all day, they only managed to go in the toilet one time each, for which they got a sticker reward on their hand. For the rest of the day they whinged and threw tantrums wanting more stickers, not wanting to go on the toilet to gain their reward. So another day today, 3 pees on the floor already. I'm feeling cranky, cant help it!
