What to do about little one's and taxis?

We will be moving to Dubai soon, JBR area, and for the first few weeks or so we won't have a personal vehicle. So, taxis it will be! I just wondered how other mothers of little ones handle taking taxis places and/or what form of transportation do you use? I have a 4-yr-old who is still in a carseat and worry about having to lug that thing around on every outing that requires a taxi!

What do you do about kids who are 2-4 that no longer fit into the rear facing seats? Their normal seats are so heavy and a lot don't fit with the taxi belts. You just have to risk it and belt them in without a car seat I guess. You can't possibly lug around one of those car seats... Or just don't use taxi's I guess, probably the option I would take.

I haven't read the reviews on the products mentioned but I just got a RideSafe Travel vest for my almost 5 yo. http://www.safetrafficsystem.com/ and more details + reviews on http://www.elitecarseats.com/Safe-Traffic-Systems-Ride-Safer-Travel-Vest.pro also more details on http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=39728, a fab car seat site if you are a bit OCD with these things. The point with all these contraptions, I guess, is that theye are used as SECONDARY and not as your everyday seat. For travel, taxi rides etc. RL, I don't think they have a distributor in the UAE, to be honest interest would probably be minimal but still, good to know they are out there. Thanks blucamel - some good information here and very interesting - thanks for taking the time to put it down :)

Anbody have the Trunki product? BoostApak.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trunki-BoostApak-Travel-Pack-Booster/dp/B003HKQJFK/ref=pd_cp_by_1 Whilst the Bubblebum product has sparked my interest in portable products, following lots of reviews on the net of the product, it looks just OK and I would use it if it was all I could have, but there do seem to be a lot of reviews about it on Amazon about 'slipping off', too low so seatbelt in the wrong position etc. I have never seen one, so can't comment personally, but there seem to be too many comments of this kind for me to have confidence. From the reviews I think it may be OK for my 7yo, but would only be suitable for my nearly 4yo with an accompanying Seatbelt guide. The TRunki product came up on Amazon as a "what other viewers of this product ended up buying". So I would really love some feedback from any users here... I am v. tired of lugging my car seat/boosters for 2 boys on holidays.. and renting anything is SOOOO expensive..

As I'm responsible for the marketing of Bubblebum, I'm sorry for the shameless promotion of this product but as Redlesley's already mentioned it I hope it's ok! It really is a great seat and I'm currently using it as I have guests and not enough car seats for 4 kids. Very practical. It is also soon to be trialled in some Dubai Airport taxis. Let's hope they see the benefit and roll it out across the fleet. It has its own facebook page with details on where to order: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bubblebum-Middle-East/118975238180419?ref=ts and there's also more info on www.bubblebum.co.uk Thanks! What a great idea! What age/weight child does this accommodate? edited by MereTX81 on 02/04/2011

Stocks should be here in the next few days exile. Drop the distributor an email and she will come back to you with an exact date and can organise delivery to you as soon as it arrives

They're really good - very light and easy to carry around. I wouldn't replace an everyday booster seat with them but as a travel aid I think they're really good.

I have used a booster seat for DS in taxis in the past. Not ideal but sometimes necessary. My advice is to always avoid Sheikh Zayed Road if possible!

Wonderful! Thank you all so much. The link is especially helpful. @Sugarbeach - I'm glad to hear it's not unheard of! I mean, most things will be within walking distance, but when I have to go to ob dr. visits I'll need transportation.

When I first got here, I didn't have a car for 5 weeks and my LO was 5 yo then. We had to get around by taxi and I just lugged the booster seat around with me. It was manageable.

No-but they run every 4 minutes or so in peak periods abd every 8 off peak. Buses run between every 15-25 minutes depending on the time of day too

That's what I was hoping. I haven't arrived yet, so I am really just unsure of how it'll work. Only spoken to hubby who is there now. Is there a metro schedule online?

Depending where you need to go you could use the Metro?
