I am just wondering what exactly do people celebrate at easter. I know Christians celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus and the J*ws celebrate pass over. But if you are neither one of the two and you celebrate easter with chocolate eggs, etc, what do you actually celebrate? what is is all about?

This is not a religious post. It is a non-religious question.

I heard two about the eggs, one was that it represents new life and also that the stone in front of the cave where Jesus' body was, was egg shaped, but that was told to me by rather over zealous nuns... No over zealous nuns for me but also told the story that the egg represented the stone in front of Jesus' tomb!!

not a religious post, non religious question? yeah right...its Easter for goodness sake, whats NOT religious about it? On this forum there has recently been questions about where people can go to see the Easter-bunny, participate in Easter-egg hunts, have an Easter-brunch, etc. At the same time all the supermarkets are full of chocolate easter eggs and more. None of this is religious as far as I know. I was asking why people do these things. What do you tell your children about easter-egg hunts and the easter bunny. I am sure it has nothing to do with what we learn in church. The replies from coffeebuz and simpleasabc are informative and relevant and what I was looking for. Thank you. I am not attacking any one who do celebrate or don't celebrate these things. I am only trying to understand it. But you are trying to understand why non religious folk celebrate a religious holiday with these traditions which are seeped in the roots of early christianity and paganism prior to that. Again, whats not religious about easter?

Coo, I was subjected to over-zealous nuns, but they never told us that! It was more about burning in the lower place..

I work in a nursery school here. We are not allowed to mention Easter at all,or do any craft with eggs, bunnies etc in case we offend any Muslims in the school - yet Aswaq, a very local supermarket, has a huge Easter display and promotion, written in English AND Arabic, so as to include everyone. Go figure!! Same rule applies to several primary schools near me back home.......in England?!? No easter eggs, no christmas cards.... Isn't it better and more enlightening to learn and appreciate holidays of all religions, why would anybody be offended of people celebrating their own religion??

Many people enjoy Christmas with food/drinks and family but do not celebrate the religious reason why there is Christmas. It is all down to profit , profit , profit and how these times of year have been marketed by big companies and how foolish we all become spending vast amounts of money we cannot really afford. Like many things people follow the crowds but do not necessarily know why.

While customarily we celebrate Easter as a religious holiday, Easter is just as often a celebration of spring and re-birth. If we look for example, at the easter egg, it is a pagan symbol of re-birth and a new life that has become a central part of the western Christian celebration of Easter. The Guardian actually ran an article recently talking about the pagan origins of various Easter celebratory practices: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/belief/2010/apr/03/easter-pagan-symbolism . The combination of pagan traditions with religious holidays is pretty prevalent, and I think often goes back to the nascent times of Christianity when new Christians tried to practice their faith under anti-religious regimes, and additionally combined their new faith with their old cultural traditions and holidays. The combination of Christian holidays with pre-Christian traditions and practices can also help to explain the many diverse celebrations of different Christian holidays across the world.

Tradition, I would think. The friends we have staying at the moment rarely go to church, but are very excited about celebrating Greek Orthodox Easter in the "traditional" way, but as we unfortunately can't find a spit, let alone a fresh lamb, we're a bit stuck. We will be hard-boiling eggs and colouring them red, as is the Greek Orthodox tradition, but I'm going to have to ask why they are red. And why eggs, now I think about it. (Are eggs the symbol of re-birth and the cycle of life?)

WH, that is what I celebrate too. I was just wondering what other people (looking for easter-brunches, etc) was celebrating. I don't mean to offend anyone. I'm sorry if I did. I never felt the need for chocolate eggs, etc. But obviously lots of people do. I was wondering why and what for?

There's nothing for u to celebrate if it is not for religious purposes!!! sorry but this is a rather offending question if u feel u have to celebrate for no reason at all. We celebrate the fact that a being gave his life up to pay for our sins!

If you celebrate easter with just chocolate eggs, you are celebrating with the chocolate manufacturers who make a fortune at this time of year so it is all about making money and us spending it. ;-)
