Before I ring up and try and discuss this on the phone with someone which I know is going to be a nightmare, can anyone please explain to me why at the American Hospital a prescription medication (fluodrocortisone) cost me 1AED per tablet, so a presciption for 60 cost me 60AED and a subsequent prescription for 100tabs cost 100AED, and yet when I've gone to City Hospital just now 100 tablets has cost me 500AED.

They are exactly the same packaging, same manufacture.

I hadn't realised what they had cost previously - lots of prescriptions floating round us at the moment.

If anyone can shed some light onto this I'd be grateful - are the hospital costs so different?

i have been a victim of overpricing recently due to which my limit was exhausted and for emergency procedure we had to pay! although in my case it was dubai mall medical centre. they charged 3x the price for a test and i had to have it for every 48 hrs for few days! i am never getting tests done there again!

don't worry - DH has now got the bit between his teeth as I'm heading home. Will definintely post what I get back from DHA - I am spitting feathers - we (or rather I as a stressed mother needing to keep my DD on her medication) have innocently 'wasted' over half our allowance from health insurance company on City Hospital's pricing policy!

that's not a clear reply...there is a limit on price of medicines whichever category. do post the reply from DHA too..let's improve our knowledge.this is Dubai afterall!

the hospital has finally emailed and their reason is that as it is classed as a non-essential medicine it is unregulated! Am waiting for a reply to my email from DHA but not holding out any hope if the above is true! So if that's the case possibly the sky's the limit and I'm lucky to have just been charged 5x what I've paid elsewhere. Will certainly NOT be using City Hospital for medication in the future unless the DHA replies any different.

An update if anyone is interested - DHA told me to speak to MOH who said no it's DHA who then passed my by phone to half a dozen people who weren't interested. I have now emailed in a complaint via the DHA website but doubt I will get anywhere with this. SO frustrating!

no JM only to say that I phoned several hospitals - all confirmed the same price, ie. 1aed/tablet. I also spoke with a couple of smaller pharmacies and a hospital pharmacy who all said that pharmacies have to charge the same price for the same medication. Didn't want to contact the Ministry before I'd I spoke with City Hospital, who rang me back this evening - I couldn't really understand what she was saying and have asked her to email her complicated reasoning as to why it is OK for them to charge more for exactly the same brand of medication. Sounds to me something to do with where they source it from but my understanding is if it is the same brand it has to be charged at the same price. I did say I was going to be getting in touch with the Ministry of Health and she said that I was within my rights to do so. Will be interesting to see what her email says. Shame they can't tell patients they charge 5x what other pharmacies do for the same stuff! Fine if you've got openended health insurance with no allowances for outpatient care and/or medication - unfortunately we don't have that luxury! I'll update once I've received an email and heard back from the Ministry.

Ah so maybe you have been charged tablets + a consultation price . The plot thickens ! .................... They told me I had to have a consultation to get another prescription. So I then rang City Hospital who said they did dispense to any prescription, and they had one tub of this left - we were about to run out. So I dashed over there and got a 500AED bill! .............................. edited by jewelsmiddle on 17/05/2011

Why don't you get in the car and go to a pharmacy, surely there is one near you. Have you ever noticed how busy they always are on the phones ? I have many many times. The key is to have the question answered at any pharmacy if there is a fixed price for prescriptions in Dubai ? exactly my plan for this morning A Rancher - not that I haven't got better things to do! Would be nice if pharmacys answered their phones though! Trouble is this medication is not generally available - it has to be kept in the fridge and every 'normal' pharmacy in a mall say doesn't stock it - the only place we've had it previously has been from American Hospital - who only dispense their own prescriptions. They told me I had to have a consultation to get another prescription. So I then rang City Hospital who said they did dispense to any prescription, and they had one tub of this left - we were about to run out. So I dashed over there and got a 500AED bill! Back to my list of hospitals.... edited by jewelsmiddle on 17/05/2011

I think the prices should all be the same. Also it seems all book prices are set the same across all bookstores.

You try calling a couple of other pharmacies and asking for the price. If you don't get any response from the Pharmacy manager you could notify the Ministry of Health as the cost of medication is controlled.

no luck ringing this evening - woman who answered the phone said the price was 500AED and couldn't explain why 5x more than at AH - so I will ring again tomorrow and speak with the Pharmacy Manager who wasn't there this evening. I can see I am going to get nowhere - I guess however there is always the possibility that AH are charging incorrectly....

To my knowledge prices of medication are fixed by the government so it may be an error from the hospital.

I do not know the answer but had thought prescriptions were the same price everywhere in Dubai and some medications were only available to purchase in some hospitals. Will be interesting to learn the reason. Could it have been a mistake ?
