Gotcha? Didn't know we were playing tag Sun Devil! ha-ha.. Whats next? Peek-a-boo! ?? haha..Joking aside... Anyway..whatever you want to call it, "tax free", "sales tax holiday weekend"...the merchants in CA (unless they are on a millitary installation or a duty free area) MUST charge everyone a sales and use tax, courtesy of CA tax assessors office..They aren't part of those 20 or so states your referring to which are offering a back to school tax free shopping weekend.. I was speaking specifically about CA because I was responding to TimTams post about shopping in LA and SF... Enjoy the "tax free weekend" wherever you are headed in Juy/August...Shopping is fun, saving $ while shopping is even better.. BTW: I will agree that Gymboree has great kids clothes, that as far as I can remember were made well, even if they are made for outlets...Not inexpensive, but worth the $. TJ Maxx, Ross, Steinmart, Marshalls, all have great deals...it's a war zone in some places, but worth the hunt if you have time or the patience...Both of which I am short on these days ...... Safe Travels...

Gotcha!! There are 13 states that do the tax free weekend and fortunately for me, all three states that I'll be in for July and August are included in that group. Yay! There are also places like TJ Maxx that offer great deals on designer labels, you just have to dig through the racks. I'm a Dillards and Macys girl myself. And sometimes at the outlet malls, the designer, like Gymboree, has a separate line of clothing designed for the outlet mall. Some people complain they aren't as good of quality like what you would find in their regular stores, but I haven't had any problems and you can get some really good prices.

[b'>[b'>SunDevil[/b'>[/b'> - Sorry, but I really wasn't trying to suggest that anyone had to shop at Neimans or Saks. I was only suggesting that if you wanted a killer deal on otherwise 'high end' expensive stuff, try those stores this time of year. As for Nikes, you can go to all the big anchor stores like Macys, Nordstrom, JCPennys, Sears, etc, and find Nikes (and others) galore on sale. Those stores are in fact indictive of true pricing on Nikes as well as all other brands of trainers/runners. Most of the big stores don't mark up prices higher than average suggested retail for the brand. Here, I noticed that they DO in fact mark up (to mark down) over suggested retail. Otherwise, simply go to the outlet malls where you can in fact get great deals on discontinued or previous seasons styles. [b'>TimTam[/b'> - San Diego does have a few awesome outlets. But if you are in LA and are headed North to SF on the coastal route, stop by the outlets in Oxnard area right before you head into Ventura/Santa Barbara area. Great deals and lots of stores! You will find all kinds of outlets along the coast highway 101 if you are driving to Monterey. My experience with outlets is that you must know what you are paying for because sometimes you can get a better deal at the dept store chains WHEN/IF they go on sale. And be careful because sometimes outlets will sell second quality or partially damaged and miss sewn items at a discount. Outlets are bargains in the rough, you just have to dig for them and know what you are getting for your $. BTW - CA is not one of the 5 'sales tax free' states..CA sales tax is average 8-9%. Any offers of "tax free shopping" is just the stores way of marketing discounts to you. You might in fact save 8-9% but don't be confused when you still see "sales tax" listed on your receipts.. Have a good trip and fun shopping!!

We are stopping at the Premium outlet in Gilroy on the way to Monterey in California and I believe there is one also near San Diego. DH is looking for Ralph Lauren, Tommy stuff and kids also want converse. I want to get some clothes for my baby niece so I'm sure these things are cheaper in the US than here. (hopefully) Thanks for all you advice.

I just got back from the US & the shopping is fabulous. I too got Coach & Mark Jacobs for a fraction of what they cost here. But only the outlet malls - Commons & the Premiun Outlet malls in Orlando were cheap. Macys I thought was quite expensive for similar staff & brands. So I would say wait & buy in the US.

Keep in mind that many states in the US participate in tax free back to school weekends. They usually run the end of July to beginning of August and you'll get shoes and clothes tax free. Also, some states include computers in those tax free weekends. The stores always run big sales during that time.

US definitely, but it helps if you can find someone who knows the areas and point you to the right shops, especially when you've got the CA sales tax to consider. If you're staying for a while and the hotel takes packages, perhaps you can even have items shipped from Amazon, which would save you some time as well...hmmm, but for trainers, I would say it's better to go to the shops- have fun!

Hit the outlet malls for great deals. Last year we were in Las Vegas and they had 2 malls - one had higher end merchandise and I got great deals on Coach handbags. Paid a fraction of the original cost.

Smarty I have to say, the shops you are talking about are some of the most expensive shops in the US and are not indicative of the true pricing for shoes like Nikes in the states.

And at least you will get the latest models in the US compared to here - seems that most of the stuff on sale here is end of lines, sizes and colours.

Hi Ladies! Had to chime in on this topic. I live in San Diego and I am here for the month of July visiting my hubby who works here half the year. I can tell you this, I know for sure the prices here are much higher, even with the sale prices! The one factor you might want to keep in mind would be the sales tax in California, which can range from 8-9% depending on the area. So figure that into your pricing as well. To pass the time while here, I like to browse the malls for the unusual. It gives me something to do because I am REALLY BORED being here by myself for a month! But, unless I come across something super fabulous I can't get in San Diego, I usually go shopping BEFORE I come to Dubai! Hit up Nordtrom in SF and LA..They have sales running until end of July...GREAT Deals...and if your looking for high end steals, go to Neiman Marcus or Saks, the sales are on now... Happy Shopping!! Shannon

the US without a doubt. Nike full price in the States will still beat Nike on sale in Dubai! and don't get me started on how much cheaper cosmetics are!

We are heading to the US in a couple of weeks, LA and San Fran. I need some trainers for my boys and not sure should I get them here in the sales or is it better to get them in the US. Adidas or Nike. Everyone says shopping in the US is great but the sales here are tempting. Any advise would be great. The sales here do not compare to the deals you will find in the U.S. Definitely wait.
