Thanks for all your responses. I guess the safest thing is NOT to lend him my car as there seems to be so much confussion. I was hoping to lend him my 7 seater and have him hire a small one for my use.. As he is my brother some of u feel he might be covered but as the car is insured in my married not my maiden name name, would that work? What I don't get is why my insurance company AXA can't just tell me if he will be covered and not confuse me with whether he has a transferrable licence but can't tell me what that is. It seems a shame that he has to waste part of his holiday visiting the RTA and then hoping that a hire company can provide a car straight away.

You also need to make sure that your insurance policy covers other drivers - they could drive my car because the insurance stipulated extra drivers but not my husbands because his policy was for named drivers only so be careful.

With my sis in town, we just called RTA yesterday. With any kind of license (her American, an international, or temporary Dubai) she can either drive a rental or a first degree relatives' car. Unfortunately, our cars are under my husband's name so techinically she can't drive them.

I also checked this very recently. On a visit visa, you are allowed to drive any vehicle, rented or privately owned, provided that the vehicle belongs to a close relative, ie spouse brother etc, and that your licence was issued by one of the countries on the driving licence exchange list ie a transferable licence. This applies only to Dubai, other emirates will have their own regulations. There is a lot of out of date info floating around on this topic, but I believe that this is the current situation and it has also been confirmed by our vehicle insurer as correct. So if your visitors are not close relatives, they cannot drive a privately owned vehicle.

I checked this information with the RTA one month ago. I called them first and they told me they do not deliver temporary driving license anymore but if the car is under my name, then my parents and my brothers and sisters can drive my car with their international driving license. I went to their office to check the information about the temporary driving license and they confirmed that it does not exist anymore. They told me that visitors are only allowed to drive rented cars, not residents'cars. So my visitors didn't drive.

we were told visitors can only drive rentals, in order to drive our cars they need a temporary local licence, you can have one made in about 20 minutes in the police station, lasts 3 months or something like that.

I leant my brother my car when he visited from the UK 2 years ago. AXA assured me there would be no problem. This year however they say we need to check with the RTA that he has a "tranferrable" licence in addition to being over 25 and holding a full recognised driving license,. What's all this about? Has anybody looked into this recently and more importantly has anyone had a relative involved in an accident and was there a problem. Is a UK license transferrable or do they decide on a one to one basis?
