I don't have long to go but the plan is to return to UK at 33 weeks for the birth (currently I am 31 weeks) but worried that I might end up delivering here!

Eeek... my Mum just told me when she and my Dad moved back from Norway years ago they had to wait six months before they were entitled to NHS care again. But that was a fair few years ago. Let me read the booklet for you and I'll post when I get my head around it!

Hi DubaiCat, thanks for sharing your experience, luckily i registered the birth as early as 24 weeks whilst I was visiting, just in case I needed to go back home, as I go often as we still have a house there. At the time I registered the pregnancy I was not sure I wanted to give birth in the UK, but luckily I did. They just registered me as a 'late booker' without any questions.. I also think it depends on your authority and your GP. Just read on the main board you're moving back to the UK so ignore everything I said! My situation only applies to non-residents who don't intend to stay, and the booklet they gave me on who qualifies for free NHS care mentions those who enter and intend to stay as permanent residents so you should be absolutely fine. Good luck with the move and the birth! Thanks DubaiCat, I was worried about DH as he is on regular meds, so I need not worry about him anymore! Cheers for clarifying :)

I read somewhere that only five per cent of babies are born on their due date! I read 3%!! (in the UK) I went into labour day before due date and delivered a few mins into it!! I held off a few pushes to get the due date delivery!! lovely drug/gas free birth.

37 weeks to the day after an induction thanks to pre-eclampsia. I'm not sure if you plan to deliver on the NHS but I just wanted to share my recent experience with you in case you encounter any problems when you arrive. We went home the first week of July as my Dad was ill and his doctors suspected cancer (thankfully all his tests so far are negative but that's another thread!). Obviously I needed maternity care while we've been here so I registered at our local GP and maternity unit. As I had pre-eclampsia in my last pregnancy, I also had to be registered with a consultant and booked to deliver at the obstetrics unit at the nearest major hospital just in case we ended up being here for the birth. I told the reception staff at the GP that we were here temporarily and resident abroad. I got a call from the practice manager a day later making sure I knew I had to pay for appointments, and when I got to the maternity unit for some monitoring they had a set of forms ready for me to complete with credit card details on. Then when I saw the consultant the midwives there asked me if I'd completed the forms and if I'd given payment details to the finance office. Non-residents paying for healthcare isn't new to me, but previously it's been a battle to get staff to understand I need to pay whereas now they seem to be ****-bent on making sure any non-residents do pay! A friend who went home to deliver recently also found the same, and since her delivery has received a rather large invoice for her emergency C-section. Of course this may just be my local health authority but I just wanted to warn you in case you find yourself in a pickle when you get there. That'll be the last thing you need at such a late stage of pregnancy. Hope it all works out for you :).

Argh frustrating - (although good for the emergency ladies obviously!) I went into labour at midnight and didn't deliver till 1pm on the afternoon, so no sleep for 48hrs for me! Not that i would change a thing. However they get here is a miracle i reckon... (We hijacked this thread slightly, sorry swarovski!)

Exactly - my OB said DD was pretty much 'ready' from 37, and she did expect me to go to 40 weeks. She could see her making breath movements in the womb etc - it was really exciting knowing she would be here soon but not when! edited by Kelly_C on 29/08/2011 i had the advantage that i knew when it was going to happen as a planned c-section the only prob that i had this was back in the uk, was that i was the first on the list, but emergencies kept coming into the hospital and instead of being "done" first thing in the morning it was like past 1pm when I was taken in.....

I was just confused over the 'full term' at 37 or 38 weeks thing, obviously the closer to 40 the better for everyone. everyone is different. obviously some are much larger than others so once the magic 37 weeks has passed its up to the docs when. before 37 weeks you may encounter probs which is why in the days after that magic number its just the growing stage!!! in some cases a lot of growing... lol

busybee2 it was 37 when i had mine 8 months ago too! I guess it depends where you get your info from. There are so many websites, books etc. Anyway here's hoping for all those waiting that the little'uns stay in as long as they need to! lol it makes a difference really, my little one was tiny born at 5lb 8 and was in ICU after having an operation so the 3 weeks makes a BIG difference.

I wonder why it changed? http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-37-weeks_1126.bc edited by Kelly_C on 29/08/2011 no i had my first one nearly 15 years ago and under 37 was prem. i couldnt go into normal labour but they wanted the baby to have as much growing as possible, so a csection was performed at 37.1 late enough not to be a prem baby and early enough not to go into normal labour which would have been dangerous.

37 + 1 this was because i had placenta previa, so they let "it" grow to 37 weeks and no more in case went into labour early. C section etc. second one arrived on due date on the dot. <em>edited by busybee2 on 28/08/2011</em>

41 +1 - finished work at 36 weeks thinking I wanted 2 weeks and then was ready for my baby to arrive. Instead she kept me waiting! Enjoy your last weeks and try and get as much sleep as possible!

37 weeks is considered full term, so anytime after that and you'll be grand! 38 is at term... 37 is still early, but not worryingly so. I just know someone who spent the last 8 weeks in hospital with her twins, fighting to keep them in for as long as possible. I think she gave birth at 36 weeks in the end, but it just puts into perspective that although the last few weeks feel long and uncomfortable, anyone who's had a preemie (or two) would probably give their eye teeth for those last few weeks. Just looking at the range here, there are a good few of you who had them early! Gosh!

Eeek 40 plus sounds like torture! Hopefully everything will be ok for my flight in a few weeks. Dream date for me would be around 37 weeks! Thanks for sharing and the best wishes :) Don't wish them early - anything between 38-42 is perfectly fine. I agree! I desperately wanted DD to come early (37 weeks onwards) but I am so happy she arrived when she did. ;)
